Are you a girls girl? Annoying neighbour isn't

Dogwalkinthedark · 29/08/2026 21:29

I'd say i'm a girls girl, if you call it that?
Enjoyed the company of men as friends more when younger, but had mainly female pals.
Just been for a dog walk around the neighbourhood with my family and ran into a couple around the corner. Any time we do, this woman just lights up around Dh and chats away (have seen her do this with other male neighbours too)
I've tried hard to be friendly and smiley but she's just not as friendly as with Dh and other men, laughing at his comments (he's not even that funny really 🤣) and chattering away, turning her back on me.
I don't know, maybe she just doesn't like me, which is fine, but she seems to love talking to the men, not women. I realise that sounds bitchy, I don't mean it to be, I just find it a bit annoying especially when we walk off and Dh says 'She's so nice!'
I have a feeling she maybe isn't!

Anyone had this or know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean OP. I fucking hate women like that. I know exactly the undercurrent you are talking about. They want to be centre of attention with all the men in the room and blank the women. In my experience they are not to be trusted - I can only think they must be very insecure and it comes out in this unpleasant way. I have no time for those people, I find them deeply unlikeable.

Yeah.
"I'm a girl's girl and love women...but I'm sure this bitch is after my man" Hmm

I prefer women's company to men's 99% of the time in social situations, as I'm just more comfortable around women, and I still think this attitude is strange.

Maybe it’s a homage to dolly, it’s a bit Jolene !

IStillHearTheWaves · 30/08/2026 08:18

We've all known at least one like this...leave her to it, not worth your energy.

If the majority of your interactions with women are negative, it is you that is the problem.

@ElleintheWoodshas given a very insightful post and that’s your response? She’s explained she lacks confidence with women due to past experiences. I definitely recognise this. You also get flirty “girls girls”, so at least she makes an effort to try.

You have no idea whether it is or not, but you've just been really unsupportive of another woman who's revealed her vulnerabilities.

OtterlyAstounding · 30/08/2026 08:08

Ironically, that's what the OP has done – tarred a woman as "not a girl's girl".

I think there's nothing wrong with saying you tend to gravitate towards men/women, imo, because the sexes are socialised differently and tend to have different dynamics, and ND women particularly can have trouble being accepted by NT women and may feel more acutely out of their depth. But I agree, to dismiss most women as judgy or "bitchy" is deeply unpleasant.

I'm ND and find I don't gel with most people, but that's an ND thing not a.woman thing. I have a collection of random women friends who I get on with... and I suspect many of them.are ND too,.which is why I get on with them 😆

Sometimes I just find it easier to talk to one half of a couple than the other, either because they seem warmer or we have something in common or they’re the person I spoke to first or whatever.

For example, my son’s best friend is usually escorted to play dates or attends school friend parties with his dad as they have a younger sibling who the mum tends to look after. Therefore, when I see them as a couple I’ve had more encounters with the dad and probably speak to him more. I would be mortified if the mum thought I was some woman hating, husband stealing weirdo!!

Bit suspect though when in social groups the woman focusses all her attentions on the men and ignores the women. The overly enthusiastic laughing at everything men say is a big ‘pick me’ red flag

we all know women like this. If you don’t, you are probably that woman

I dont think its very insightful. It was a longwinded "women are mean and shallow" and that is nonsense.

Lossaloft · 30/08/2026 08:20

There could be a 100 reasons behind this. Maybe she has just found she gets on better with men than women, maybe she was badly bullied by girls at school and just gave up on female friendships, maybe she is autistic and finds the simpler dynamics of male friendships easier to understand and navigate, maybe she is quite socially anxious and feels less judged talking to men. She may just prefer male company just as you prefer female company.

Most of my friends are women but I’m now in a club where I am the only woman. I’ve been really surprised by how much more relaxed and easy and pressure free I find it. You probably get closer friendships with women, but there’s a lot more unspoken expectation and it’s a lot easier to cause offense.

Whatever it is, I just wouldn’t let it bother me. She is how she is. It doesn’t really affect you.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 30/08/2026 08:21

The male-focused women are likely the same group of women who complain that they feel invisible when they get older. The men will lose interest in their flirting and they’ve failed to develop female friendships / feel comfortable around women.

And your post was dismissive and unpleasant.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 30/08/2026 08:21

Some women have a lot of internalised misogyny. Also men will flatter and flirt with pretty much any woman which makes them ‘easier’ I guess.

You should feel sorry for them tbh, because they’re missing out on connections with other women, which I think are deeper and more meaningful than those men make with friends.

You know it’s quite possible to be a woman who supports women whilst at the same time being able up identify a pick me, male validation seeking unpleasant woman.

What does she do for work?

I'm friends with women and men equally but when it comes to small talk (which is what talking to neighbours is) I sometimes find it easier with men, I think because I've worked in male dominated fields for so long that I've been socialised into male small talk.

Like the PP, having spent all my working life in a male dominated industry (literally a handful of women among several hundred men), I often find it easier to ‘pass the time’ with small talk with men. I think I often come across as quite reserved with women until I really know them.

Any woman who thinks other women have no interest in politics or science - you are the problem.
Women have a wide variety of interests, just like men do. They don't owe you a political debate before you even get to know them. Perhaps men have more energy for that because they dont spend all day problem solving and because they don't have to be quite so worried about who they might upset.

Who has said that women have no interest in science or politics?

I didn’t see where she blamed other women, she explained how she feels inside and why she has to work extra hard to overcome her fear of rejection from women.

spaghettiandicecream · 30/08/2026 08:29

Your neighbour is a flirt, some men love them, most women loathe them. How does her partner respond?

ThatJadeLion · 30/08/2026 08:30

I'm not really a 'girls.girl'. she can probably pick up from your facial expression when she talks to your DH so you might not seem approachable. I get on better with men, but because of situations it would cause ..like this post and feeling disrespectful to a man's partner, I don't have any male friends. I just find men are generally (not all) more laid back, not deep thinkers and easy going., often more pleasant to be around.

5128gap · 30/08/2026 08:30

dontthreatenmewithagoodtime · 30/08/2026 08:02

Some of the posts on this thread make me sad. Tarring women with the same brush, calling us judgy and gossipy. The bitchiest biggest gossips at my workplaces have been men.

I don't trust women who say "I only get on with men because men are easiest and women are x,y,z" because a woman who says that is, demonstrably, very judgmental.

You might be a person who has more in common with men due to hobbies and interests... and that's fine... but there will be some women you have stuff in common with too and to dismiss us all as bitchy, is ironically, very bitchy.

There are plenty of people I don't get on with, but I tend to think that's because we don't have much in common... which is OK! I don't attribute it to us being women.

Yes. It's quite ironic that the people who claim to be so much more comfortable with men seem to have so little experience of them. How can it be possible to have a life surrounded by men and still believe in childish stereotypes like they are ALL so much less complicated! They aren't bitchy or gossipy! They are on my wave length! They talk about interesting things!
Its like they've cobbled together a persona consisting of all the traits they think superior and projected it on to all male people with very limited experience to show them they've crested a myth.
I'm more comfortable with women because my experience has shown me that while there are uncomplicated, non bitchy, interesting men AND women on my wavelength, there's always a possibility with men that there will be a sexual agenda of some sort, or they'll pervieve one, or someone else will. So I have this in mind and stay reserved, which I don't have to think about when it comes to other women.

ilovesooty · 30/08/2026 08:30

I have a good mix of both male and female friends with whom I have varying degrees of closeness which isn't sex dependant.

My neighbours either side are couples and I get on equally well with the men and women.

I did do professional training with different groups. The only one I found actively unpleasant was an all female group.

I think describing grown women as girls is infantalising.

AmnesiacsDream · 30/08/2026 08:37

FirmSnake · 30/08/2026 08:26

Edited because it was too confrontational and not constructive.

People haven't said women have NO interest. They've said men tend to have more.

Men and women really aren't that polarized. But there are average differences between that are significant.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/08/2026 08:47

I’ve certainly known women like that, OP - they behave differently with men - as you say, they ‘light up’. It’s no good ever saying anything to the men, though - they will hardly ever get it - because they don’t see how different they are when it’s all-females. They just think you’re being bitchy or jealous.

Jellycatspyjamas · 30/08/2026 08:52

Speakeasier · 30/08/2026 02:38

I’m a bit like this too. I tend to prefer more traditionally male subjects and want to cry when the conversations turn to knitting or make up.

However if someone’s wife or another woman was present I wouldn’t hog the man in any way. With regard to conversations I prefer them to flow snd anyone who wants to join in is appreciated. So I most certainly don’t block a woman from the conversation with a man, particularly if it’s her partner. I think that’s very rude and attention seeking. That’s the red flag more than the general chatting.

What the hell, I don’t gave a single female friend whose conversation turns to knitting. We’re all educated, politically aware adult women. Traditionally male topics? I wonder how often maths and engineering come up in casual conversation with those truly interesting men?

I can’t believe the casual stereotyping of men and women, I have friends who are men and friends who are women, I’m not trying to seduce the men, nor are they interested in me that way, we just get on with each other and yes sometimes I won’t find the wife/girlfriend as easy to talk to but that’s about personality not because she talks about crochet while her husband and I explore the depths of a maths problem.

RaininSummer · 30/08/2026 09:05

Hariboastros · 30/08/2026 01:32

People are missing the point here. It doesn't really matter whether they like the term girls girl. Surely the bigger issue is this woman is rude and unpleasant?

If I don’t like one person in couple I’ll either ignore my dislike and speak to them both as normal OR I’ll ignore both of them.

Generally speaking is massively rude to ignore one person out of a couple/group of people.

Even if she was only like this with OP and friendly other women it would still giving mean girl energy. Because why treat someone like that?

Edited

Exactly this. No idea why people are feeling the need to defend that they like talking to men. This issue is the blatant rudeness to the OP whilst happily chatting to her partner.
