Are you a girls girl? Annoying neighbour isn't

I'd say i'm a girls girl, if you call it that?
Enjoyed the company of men as friends more when younger, but had mainly female pals.
Just been for a dog walk around the neighbourhood with my family and ran into a couple around the corner. Any time we do, this woman just lights up around Dh and chats away (have seen her do this with other male neighbours too)
I've tried hard to be friendly and smiley but she's just not as friendly as with Dh and other men, laughing at his comments (he's not even that funny really 🤣) and chattering away, turning her back on me.
I don't know, maybe she just doesn't like me, which is fine, but she seems to love talking to the men, not women. I realise that sounds bitchy, I don't mean it to be, I just find it a bit annoying especially when we walk off and Dh says 'She's so nice!'
I have a feeling she maybe isn't!

Anyone had this or know what I mean?

Appreciate all the feedback, hard to answer to all.
Dh definitely wasn't flirting and does tend to see the best in people-male or female. Her Dh seemed oblivious too or didn't seem to mind, perhaps he's used to it.
The conversation was about our dogs, so a shared conversation, but she barely addressed me or replied to my attempts to join in the conversation.
She is good looking, this isn't a jealousy thing to me, a couple of my friends are beautiful and good mates with Dh too, I have no problem with this, they don't act the same at all.
She is a different nationality/culture, perhaps it's that? Trying to give her the benefit of the doubt sort of, it's just so different to how most women I know act, especially at this age, have seen it maybe when in teens/early twenties

Why are you trying to give a rude cheeky fucker the benefit of the doubt?

And why is your husband pretending he doesn't know she's rude to you?

ErNo20 · 31/08/2026 10:18

Just a reminder, any woman claiming all women are mean to her/avoiding her is a) lying or b) delusional or c) treats all women like absolute crap.

There are no other options.

No.

Ok, no problem.

You don’t think ‘girl’s girl’ used to describe a grown woman sounds twee?

No.

That's a pretty strange take.

Well it does exist.

When I had my baby and I joined mum and baby groups to make some mum friends I couldn’t believe how dull so many of the women were. Their only interest seemed to be their children and being a mum. Work, culture, politics, current affairs… nothing

Ha ha! Yes! To be fair, it's a group centered around mums and babies so it's pretty safe to assume that's a "thing" you have in common and in those early months when you're sleep deprived it can be harder to think of anything to say at all (at least, that's how I sometimes felt). But it gets dull quickly if no one's interested in moving on to anything else. I did make a great friend at a toddler group, though. She and I bonded over movies.

Sometimes I just find it easier to talk to one half of a couple than the other, either because they seem warmer or we have something in common or they’re the person I spoke to first or whatever.

For example, my son’s best friend is usually escorted to play dates or attends school friend parties with his dad as they have a younger sibling who the mum tends to look after. Therefore, when I see them as a couple I’ve had more encounters with the dad and probably speak to him more. I would be mortified if the mum thought I was some woman hating, husband stealing weirdo!!

I agree.

Sometimes one half of the couple is more interesting to talk / easier conversation or gives warmer vibes.
Try not to overthink it OP

I do wonder if there was a video recording of man and woman talking and it was played on here how many would see 2 people talking and how many would have some back story, she is flirting and doesn't want any other person around or he wants to cheat with her or some other saga behind it

It would depend on how they interacted with each other. Many people are quite astute when it comes to reading other people and would find it easy enough to tell the difference between friendly conversation and flirting. A rule of thumb would be, can you imagine the behaviour being directed at their own sex? For example, men don't typically blush or do shy smiles or find a reason to touch other men. Women don't typically giggle prettily at the jokes of other women and gaze at them as though they're the most fascinating person they've ever met. If you notice this sort of thing, it's almost always flirting.

ginasevern · 30/08/2026 15:44

I've always preferred the company of other women and have never had male friends unless they were part of a group. I usually find woman that prefer male company not to my taste. They're usually the "pick me" sort amongst other things.

People are falling over themselves to try and excuse her. But yeah, she’s one of those who likes the men and wants to be fancied. It’s gives her a kick to think she could potentially pinch your man if she wanted to; clearly been listening to Dolly Parton songs.

This is my gut feeling

Toastersandkettles · 30/08/2026 14:27

I'm not particularly close to anyone, man or woman. I do find women quite difficult to get on with though and I've struggled all my life to handle the bitchiness and moods that seem to happen with female friendships. I do like a chat with men as they are usually a bit more lighthearted, but I don't have any close friendships with them. I certainly wouldn't behave the way your neighbour is though!

Dogwalkinthedark · 30/08/2026 14:23

LlynTegid · 30/08/2026 14:04

I wonder if the neighbour comes from a culture where men are expected to do certain DIY or other traditional 'men's jobs' and being on good terms with male neighbours is thinking ahead in case any such help is needed where DH needs assistance.

😂Not sure

My best friend is an only girl, she grew up in a house full of boys. She finds it much easier to chat to males. There is a perception from those who dont know her that she's "bitchy" or "a flirt" which is far from the truth. She is good looking which feeds into that narrative. I hate it for her. It makes her uneasy and self conscious around new females when infact she is a really good friend!

Yup. Same. I have loads of female friends, always found it super easy to make female friends.

But yeah there are women like that who just find men so mucccchhh eassiierrr to talk to, honest guv 😆

And that's because they think of other women as a threat/competition and have no interest in female friendships. I've known a couple of women like this, they're not worth bothering with.

That's a pretty strange take.

Have you posted about this neighbour and your husband before? Something about doing the school run together??

No, I saw that post I think, about the mum moving the kids to another school because of another school mum...I think?! I'm not that crazy

I wonder if it's because they're wanting to stick to safe ground? Or maybe they save all their baby-oriented talk for the mum and baby group and have other friends for other things - or they're just deep in the trenches and can't think of anything else?

I do find most people in general aren't interested in the sorts of things I like to talk about, but the one mum and baby group I went to was very boring and awkward - although I ended up leaving for other reasons. I don't think dads would've been more interesting though 😅

This reminds me of a time I went to a mum and baby group at a church... the lady checking us in said "welcome! everyone here is friendly and not cliquey at all".

You can see where this is going... daughter and I were ignored completely by the small group of women there. At snack time they grabbed most of the snacks for their children leaving hardly anything for my girl (literally a few banana circles and a slice of apple). They properly shunned me- no smiling or returning my smiles... avoiding me completely. It was so weird. Never ever happened at other baby groups.

When I left, the woman who checked me in checked me out and said "will you come back?". I said yes but obviously I didn't.

I got the impression she was trying to get new mums in and was aware that the mums who were regulars were driving people away.

Lougle · 30/08/2026 11:50

I do think this can be a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. You sense she doesn't like you, so you're slightly awkward and stiff around her, so she senses you don't like her, so she focuses on your DH who is oblivious not awkward and stiff, which confirms your suspicion that she doesn't like you, so you are more awkward and stiff, so she has her suspicions confirmed that you don't like her...

Laurmolonlabe · 30/08/2026 11:46

I'm not a girl's girl, I tend to get on better with men than women- i'm friendly but usually do not connect.

Any woman claiming all women are mean to her/avoiding her is a) lying or b) delusional or c) treats all women like absolute crap. If you are a woman who claims all women are mean to you/avoiding you then it's you who are the common denominator. That's something to explore in therapy, with a female psychologist.

Yeah, that’s not what I was talking about so not sure how that’s relevant. Like whatsoever.

Hahahahahahaha! I absolutely definitely DO know. Nah, the truth hurts is all 😆😅

See, this is just mean and unnecessary. You're being petty and trying to hurt someone for no real reason - they didn't say anything bothersome to you afaik.

Is that girl's girl behaviour?
