Is the dog invited?

1000 replies

DoggyAuntie · 06/08/2026 21:02

My husband's brother and his wife are coming to stay with us this weekend, on their way back home from their holiday further north. All good. They live in a big house with a garden whereas we live in a smaller house with a back yard but we can cope for a couple of days.

This afternoon, I looked at my sister-in-law's Instagram. She has posted photos of herself and her husband on holiday - with her dog!

I have not invited the dog. The dog had not been mentioned. I do not want the dog in my house.

My husband has said it's just one of those things. I feel they are being insufferably rude to expect me to welcome the dog into my home without even asking.

Am I being unreasonable?

OP - take a screenshot of the poll - send to family and say look guys 2000 people think ur unreasonable. ( which they are btw)
;) Won't do much for family relations but would be very funny.

The conflict is that my husband says it doesn't matter, I think it does, my brother and sister in law will think I'm being rude and unreasonable, I think they are...

You dog people really don't understand the lives of us humans, do you...

Saying someone 'doesn't understand humans' because they like taking their dog on holiday is a bit ironic. Around a third of UK households have a dog, so it's hardly an unusual view. People who love dogs often choose holidays where they can all go together—just as others choose child-friendly holidays or adults-only holidays. Neither is wrong.

And your first point... People will think your being rude and unreasonable... It's certainly how you come across in your comments on here!

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowlt · 07/08/2026 19:09

Have you spoken with them yet, OP, or are they just turning up and you're taking a gamble!

Dogs are not family members, any more than houseplants and teddy bears are family members. They are pets.

You're clearly like chalk and cheese with your brother in law with that attitude.

By all means tell them the dog can't come if you don't want him in your house but you have to accept that it means they probably won't be able to come.

Are you sure your husband didn't know they were taking the dog on holiday with them? If we go on a UK holiday I wouldn't think I'd need to make it clear that we're taking the dogs, it just goes without saying.

TonTonMacoute · 07/08/2026 19:13

Well, it's tricky if they are on their way back from a holiday with the dog, but they should definitely not have assumed that the dog was invited.

We live in the SW and people often drop in on their way to or from holidays. If they have dogs they always check with us in advance that it's okay. It usually just for lunch, so not an issue, but I have to say that overnight would be more problematic

There are some pretty cruel posts on this thread. You don't understand the affection some people have towards their family pets, sure, you can post that. But to post about how you "wonder if they are okay" or whether they "have a "mental illness" etc. Nasty.

From some of the nasty posts I see on here I'm glad I have the mental illness of being a dog lover.

A dog has never once been cruel to me, they've only ever brought me happiness. Humans on the other hand...

You need new friends and get adopted by more loving family

Brining. Soaking in salt water. I think she's joking.

BrightLeader · 07/08/2026 19:20

I'm afraid most dog owners believe everyone likes dogs. Personally I don't particularly & don't want them in my house although when my sister in law was alive & stayed here sometimes we did tolerate them.

LadyWhistledownsSocietyPapers · 07/08/2026 19:20

You came on to ask if BIL was rude for not mentioning the dog when he probably assumed you'd know as you know they have a dog, and his brother is clearly fine with it (and again probably assumes you and your H are capable of coming to agreement), but all YOU'VE been is rude.

You must be a wonderful actress to have fooled them all into thinking you have no issue with them or their pet. Or that you're a nice enough person that they 'love' coming to you. Or maybe they are also good at acting and pretend they 'love' to come to you when really they only want to see your husband? Did your husband possibly know but didn't mention it because of how you react so nastily if you feel you've been slightly inconvenienced? Who knows.

People in the votes are in your favour because people do tend to generally ask about bringing pets. Sounds more like in this case it's been an oversight. But it's not voting in favour of your attitude. I read all your posts so I didn't have to read the full thread and you come across as very unpleasant and fake.

of course, they are carnivores, the owner is made of meat

Cats do too.

WallowingInMud · 07/08/2026 19:24

I am late to the party but IMO OP is entirely justified in not wanting to wecome a dog into her home.

Many dog lovers are totally blinkered into believing that their dog is no trouble and that everyone will adore them. They are not the same as actual human company no matter how much their owners might believe this.

Any dog owner will appreciate what I am trying to express, albeit slightly tongue in cheek, about the depth of emotion we feel for our pooches.

But not wrong, my 82yr old mother said they are like her children they gave her a reason to get out of bed after my dad died

Agreeing she is justified for not wanting a dog in her home is one thing, but have you actually read her replies to people? I certainly wouldn't be team OP on that basis.

Thank-you for your contribution.

You've clearly put a lot of thought and given up your valuable time into diagnosing the dynamic between me, my husband, his brother and his dog and sharing it, uninvited, on this thread.

If I might offer one little piece of direct feedback: it is probably quite hard to really ascertain the nuances and ebb and flow of a conversation when you only hear one side of it. But well done you and thank you for doing your best to piece together the clues and coming to the conclusion you have.

I'm sure up to 66% of posters will agree that it's definitely the kind of thing a genuine and pleasant individual would do.

I cannot believe that anyone thinks it's ok to turn up with a pet to someone else's house without asking.

MaidOfSteel · 07/08/2026 19:36

You’re having no trouble giving blunt, sharp answers on here, OP, so you should have no trouble telling your in-laws that the dog is not welcome.

HereWeGo1234 · 07/08/2026 19:36

@DoggyAuntie my MN says it’s 2,518 votes, 66% agree with you but (oops) you forgot to mention that 34% disagrees with you. That’s about 850 people’s opinion so it’s worth considering.

I agreed with you in the poll but as I said previously, I also think that if you and yr husband had said no dogs allowed when the weekend was being arranged you wouldn’t be in the situation you find yourself in.

They are lovely yes, ours is. We still wouldn't take her with us when visiting people.

Mamafromtheblock · 07/08/2026 19:37

Urgh, dog wasn’t invited or mentioned. It’s just rude to turn up with them!

Reminds me of my FIL just last month though. Hosted a party at our house for our 2 year old and he brought his dog! No mention beforehand and definitely wouldn’t have allowed it if he hadn’t turned up on the doorstep. They only live 15mins away and the party was 2 hours - not like he couldn’t have been left at home!

you should have just told him to take it home.

Dogs are not family members, any more than houseplants and teddy bears are family members. They are pets.

If you own a dog though it's not something that can be treated like a houseplant or teddy when going on holiday, or even out for the day. It is a living creature that does function as a family member, even if that's not the dictionary definition of 'family'. That's why your relatives have it with them.

Our dog requires way more planning for than any other family member - the others can be left for hours, can open their own food cans, can be left to sit by themselves on a beach, and can drive to Sainsbury's.

Do you have children? If so do they know that your dog is more important? You are absolutely bonkers!

Edited

I do, two very beloved and treasured children who I love more than life itself but I tell them all the time I don’t love them as much as my doggy. They love him more than me too. Pretty confident my husband loves him more than all of us, which I absolutely accept - none of us humans will lick his feet after a long walk or greet him enthusiastically at some ungodly hour of the morning.

He is infinitely more loveable than any of us.

Ouch, you got me good!

When I said 66% of the replies agreed with me in the binary choice poll, I didn't imagine that anyone would work out that it meant 34% disagreed.

Oops! 😬
