Is the dog invited?

1000 replies

DoggyAuntie · 06/08/2026 21:02

My husband's brother and his wife are coming to stay with us this weekend, on their way back home from their holiday further north. All good. They live in a big house with a garden whereas we live in a smaller house with a back yard but we can cope for a couple of days.

This afternoon, I looked at my sister-in-law's Instagram. She has posted photos of herself and her husband on holiday - with her dog!

I have not invited the dog. The dog had not been mentioned. I do not want the dog in my house.

My husband has said it's just one of those things. I feel they are being insufferably rude to expect me to welcome the dog into my home without even asking.

Am I being unreasonable?

DOGS ARE FAMILY MEMBERS and it is ridiculous and incredibly stupid and insensitive to say they are just the same as a plant or a teddy bear!!!

PinotandPray · 07/08/2026 18:29

In our family we expect dogs to be included because we are big dog lovers and all have dogs, I guess they just expect you to love the dog as a family member ❤️

if we were staying with friends I’d mention but family I’d welcome the dog with open arms (but that’s just us!)

Our dog is our pet, we love her but she is not a family member.
People do not want other people's pets in their homes.

Which would be a pretty stupid /CF expectation - especially about a pet free home.

Everyone knows that not everyone loves dogs.

@mydogisthebest- I'm obviously making sweeping generalisations about dig owners. There are good and bad obviously. In my experience people that see their dog as a human are not great dog owners.
Like I said I'm not a 'dog hater ' - I just don't like being around them. Childish to find that 'hateful'. I don't like moths either but I don't 'hate ' them.

CreamSecond · 07/08/2026 18:32

That's not the kind of holiday they were on. They were staying in a big city for a couple of days. I had no idea they would take their dog

But surely that's the sort of break dogs love. Shopping malls, museums, restaurants, nice hotels, pavements to stretch their long leads across. Doggy heaven it seems. I see loads of them.

Late to the party but I always feel quite sad when people are dog haters - they miss out on so much love! Our dog is as important in our family as any of us, genuinely, it’s a very special relationship between human and dog and in some ways surpasses even the greatest love for a child, because they stay babies so you never lose that gooey inexplicable adoration just at their very sleeping being.

however, I would always overtly ask if my dog could come to stay because it is a different kind of guest to humans. In this situation where the OP isn’t prepared to state her objections, because it would seem rude, I can understand her late night desire to sound off. If that helps her to refrain from sounding off to BIL then all to the good. Hope the weekend is more peaceful and less slobbery than you expect op.

Jesus Christ. I’m not a dog hater, I like dogs, I grew up with dogs and I don’t mind if people ask to bring their dogs when they visit us. I do hate people who compare dogs to children though, not even remotely the same, to suggest you can love a dog more than a child in anyway is batshit. A dog is a pet not a human, when you get a dog you know it’s for 10-15 years and you’ll outlive it and it can be replaced with another pet after, it’s not anywhere near the same as loving a child.

Mine isn’t. She’s a much loved pet but she’s not a ‘family member’. She’s a dog.

Should I have made it clear at the time that my mother in law and the England Women's Rugby team weren't invited too?

I was sympathetic until this comment. I have a dog, she's part of our family. If the dog has been included in their holiday, I guess your in laws assumed she would be included in the visit. I think they should have checked but your sarcastic remark makes me think you really aren't aware of a dog's place in the scheme of things. Tell them the dog isn't welcome and give them the opportunity to dodge an embarrassing and potentially unpleasant visit. But don't expect to be invited back to theirs soon, unless, of course, your mother in law fixes it.

More rudely?!

I think it is exceptionally rude to message my family in the manner of a borough council memo.

You seem pretty skilled at being exceptionally rude, so not sure why it's a problem?

*For what it's worth, we have a dog and would never just bring it to someone's house without explicit permission. I wouldn't find it particularly relaxing having our dog in someone else's house for more than a couple hours. We're fortunate in having a fantastic home boarding situation for when we're away, though

Zaza2020 · 07/08/2026 18:37

Maybe worth a text to ask - ' i see in your holiday snaps you have the dog, will he be joining you?' 😂🫣 just a thought and then you can prepare and know for sure.

SusanJJ · 07/08/2026 18:38

How about 'just seen Rover ob Facebook! Have you made arrangements for him to stay somewhere because he can't stay here. Sorry if there's been a misunderstanding but we don't allow dogs in our house. Hope you can still come xx'

@CreamSecond I think it depends on the dog's personality tbh. My dog wouldn't enjoy a city break at all, he likes open spaces, parks, fields and woods are his idea of heaven. He doesn't particularly want to go into shops and cafes unless treats are available, and I don't know what he'd get out of a museum. 😂But others may be completely different.

Ally886 · 07/08/2026 07:41

Agree with this.

OP If you're just posting so you can be rude to people that says enough about you that I hope the dog shits on your bed.

Honestly though, if I knew someone with a dog was going to call in on their way back from an outdoorsy holiday, i would hope I'm intelligent enough to assume their dog will be with them.

I have friends with dogs, if they're more than an hour from home, I assume their dog is with them. Common sense

Haha love it!

Yes. Love of food and attention. 🙄

Why does my Jack Russell bring me a toy and make a fuss every time I’ve been out and I come through the door then ? That’s not love of food or attention. That’s ’yay, you’re home’. I don’t think non dog lovers understand the joy of unconditional love from a beautiful creature, but that’s OK. It’s a choice.

Yeah my dog isn’t particularly into shopping or museums. She prefers rolling in fox shit.

Although I think that poster was being a bit tongue in cheek, making the point that so many people take their dogs to really unsuitable places like fancy hotels and restaurants!

GabriellaFaith · 07/08/2026 18:50

Sorry if I have missed something, but are you sure they are planning to bring their dog?

We take our dogs on holidays, but I would make arrangements for them if we were going somewhere they weren't invited.

Just seems odd they wouldn't have even mentioned it.

CreamSecond · 07/08/2026 18:51

But the OP will not do this so is passively aggressively ranting on MN instead. Total waste of time and energy but if it satisfies the OP to do it this why... why not, each to their own

I don't see any ranting. Just plain speaking.

My brother doesn't have a dog. Read the thread.

(Why don't people read the thread?)

I don't think it matters if brother or brother in law, principle is the same. Only way to know and to sort it is to call.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 07/08/2026 18:56

When are they due to arrive @DoggyAuntie ? Please let us know what happens

HereWeGo1234 · 07/08/2026 18:58

You’ve come on MN looking for advice, so you have to take the good with the bad. Not everybody reads every message. Your tone is quite sharp with some people.

You say you think husband‘s brother and brother‘s wife are ‘insufferably rude’ but if you and your husband had made it clear to his brother (& brother’s wife) that their dog was not invited you wouldn’t have this problem. To some people a dog is considered a member of the family.

May I also add that if I were them, I would’ve text u and yr husband to check if it was okay to bring the dog. I think the fault is on both sides.

I haven't come on Mumsnet looking for advice.

I have come on Mumsnet to ask if I am being unreasonable to think that turning up with an uninvited dog is rude.

Currently 66% of nearly 3,000 respondents agree with me that it is.

I did wonder whether it was a joke!

@YoQuieroVino Yep, rolling in something smelly is popular here too!
