To not want to give my DSD the money we would have spent on her holiday

ZestLemon · 30/07/2026 17:01

We're a family of five: myself, my husband, our two children (12 & 14), and my stepdaughter, who is 18.

My stepdaughter lives with her mum full time and is very much in independent 'mode' now, so rather than following a set routine she comes over whenever she wants.

We're booked to go to Disney World in Florida next year with our two children doe 3 weeks, we are doing all the big attractions such as universal too. We invited my stepdaughter to come too, but she has said Disney isn't really her thing and she didn't think she'd enjoy it. Fine, not a problem!

However, her mum has now had the cheek texted saying that because my stepdaughter isn't coming, we should give DSD the equivalent amount of money that we would have spent on her so she can go on holiday with her friends instead.....

AIBU, or is she mad?!? We have said no but she is now texting all sorts of abuse.

The Disney trip is costing us over 10k and we are only doing a cheap trip this year to save for it.
Yes, we have spent less because she's chosen not to come, but that was entirely her decision.

Really?

she can’t ask for time off from her holiday from her part time supermarket/shop job a year from now 🤦‍♀️ what is wrong with the people on this thread

Do you work? A request for a 3 week holiday from a new and junior employee isn't likely to be looked at favourably.

The step parent should stay out of it even though it was her that organised the trip and paid for it with her money? OP has said she is the family breadwinner. You do realise without step parent there wouldn't be a trip? Now she has to cope with awful, abusive behaviour from her SD's mother that has probably been going on for years. I didn't hear a gleefully tone in this thread, I heard someone who has been worn down by years of this abusive nonsense and every action getting twisted to make them appear like the bad guys.

I get the impression the real Disney fan is OP, she has organised this trip with her own money, invited everyone along fairly and now is getting nothing but grief and agro.

All the discussion about uni expenses and trips between Dad and Daughter are irrelevant to OP who is just trying to deal with the hurt of yet another nice gesture being sabotaged by SD's Mum and the constant undermining of her and DH's parenting decisions.

I'd be interested to know how SD feels about the whole charade now she is 18. Is she OK with her Mum being so abusive? or is her number one priority getting money by any means possible.

Or maybe the girl is just a kid whose hit 18 in a less than ideal family situation with a person who treats her like she's responsible for this shit show and her mum's actions.
She wants to be with her friends and wouldn't mind some extra cash

Id be interested to what her dad for her 18 bday !!

You can’t take tone from written word in the way you want to…not on a public forum like this. OPs responses are made at varying times of the day and to posters who have at times been rude…so tone will change with that context.

There is no way you can judge this family based on the OP being so annoyed with DSD’s DM that it lead to a thread being started…the thread itself started because of frustration so lots of earlier posts will be written with that still in her mind. Subsequent posts are responses to people who are judging her without reason which again can sway tone.

Look at the words OP has said, nothing about disliking DSD, nothing about not supporting her, she actually said something in a really loving and proud manner when saying ‘she’s a good little worker’ which shows she cares.

Are you NC-ed OP?😀

We have work ethics, apparently.

lol…people are entitled to holidays. They’re part of your contract 🤣😂

NoTimeForThisShit · 01/08/2026 11:29

Boreded · 01/08/2026 10:27

This is because of the frenzy whipped up by other posters though. Nothing that OP has actually said paints a picture of a DSD that is not treated like family. People have their own hang ups and have projected it onto this thread.

Nothing? Not even “ CM stops next month!!!” or “Uni isnt included as full time education for CMS purposes!!!”?

Holidays have to be agreed with employers and fit in with work requirements. "Entitled to holidays" doesn't mean automatically 3 weeks off at the time that suits the employee.

Yes I work. She won’t be a ‘new’ employee, she will have worked there for at least a year when the holiday happens.

Holidays are an entitlement that are part of your contract, and with regard to her being new…one of the parts of the onboarding process for a job is to give the dates of your pre-booked holidays so that in itself shows that ‘new’ people are not less than and have just as much right to holidays.

I don’t understand why so many people are determined to find some new reason to be mad. The OP herself stated that holidays weren’t an issue.

Correct. 🤷‍♀️

So you agree that an employee can ask their employer for holidays?

Asking now for in a years time? Unless it was her wedding or similar very exceptional circumstances I doubt they'd even consider it. She's likely to be told to request it when the holiday year starts.

Youve taken the first one out of context.

The OP was asked when it stopped so that they no longer had to communicate with the DSD’s DM, she answered that question.

there were 2 exclamation points after it, most likely because the OP was happy not to have to deal with the DM directly anymore (as this is what she was being asked about)

Yes, I do, for a large respected company, it isn’t one of our policies.

Irrespective of that, the OP herself said that it wasn’t an issue with holidays.

Eh? Not sure what your point is. (or why you think constantly posting emojis help make it)

In theory a very junior new employee can ask for 3 weeks off for no particularly special reason in the next calendar year. She's likely to be told No. Or told to ask when the next calendar year starts.

I mean in theory I could ask my bank to lend me £10 million pounds but they're not going to.

YABU

will you say the same to your own children at 18 - come with us or nothing? Get a job if you want a holiday?
I probably wouldn’t have offered the exact equivalent amount (and yes, I would think you were loaded too if you spent £20k on a holiday) but I would certainly given the cost of the flights.
shes 18, not 28

Because my response came in on:

Yes, and she'd be a fool to even ask - doesn't show a good work ethic!!

And it has continued from there.

Also emojis convey an additional message without words 🤦‍♀️

You are (I assume) a grown up in a career.

The step kid is a teenager doing ..not sure it's been said but part time hours, more likely a casual/zero hours contract, lower wage, lower skilled, and with minimum employment history in a world that seems to have very few opportunities for teenagers to earn. A considerable difference.

And yes, if it's part-time/zero or casual hours, they might not care if she is there, but maybe she wants to be there/be responsible/takes it seriously.

Do you give the child that says no to an ice cream the money instead, where is the cut off? To be honest, you just come across as jealous.

But asking for holidays doesn’t mean she isn’t taking it seriously. Would you really want to work for someone who thinks you are a piss taker if you ask for holidays because your family are offering to take you away for three weeks? Also it is just a job while she is at uni, not a career so it doesn’t matter whether they think she is taking it seriously.

Anyway my point is that it is irrelevant because the OP confirmed that it is nothing to do with holidays and time off.

Do you realise that a small number of people on this thread are getting really bogged down in all of the details that don’t matter, like time off etc. The issue that was asked about was whether it wasn’t unreasonable not to give the money, but it has grown arms and legs due to all sorts of hate towards an OP who asked a simple question.

I’m not engaging with people anymore because it’s pointless, they won’t look at things rationally. It seems like some people default to hate towards OPs (particularly SMs) and I just don’t understand it.

Timeforachange26 · 01/08/2026 11:43

Exactly, this is normal. You have a holiday allowance and you use it how you want, within reason, and only if the business agrees.

I have a block of 3 weeks off every single summer, my employer hasn’t had an issue with it in the 15ish years I’ve been doing it.
