Girl on boat

Love classic Greek names? Maybe you or your partner have Greek heritage or perhaps you just love the idea of bestowing some Mediterranean sunshine on your little one with a name of Greek origin.

Classic Greek choices never seem to go out of style and they’re certainly hot property at the moment, with names such as Theodore (and its diminutive Theo) hitting the top 10 boy names, according to the latest official stats for England and Wales, released by ONS  in May 2024.

A Greek baby name for girls, Penelope, has also soared in popularity in the last decade, leaping 70 places from 101 to 31 in the ONS top 100.

Evidently, A-list stars love a classic Greek baby name, as Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost chose Cosmo for their son, born in 2021.

You may already know a fair bit about the Greek gods, from reading classics tomes like Homer’s The Iliad. But even if your knowledge on this subject is mainly cribbed from Disney’s Hercules, you’ll know that many Greek baby names are inspired by the mythical stories surrounding Ancient Greek gods and legends. This means that the influence of mythology on baby boy and baby girl name trends remains strong, both in Greece and globally.

Interestingly, it’s a long held Greek tradition to name babies after their grandparents. However, modern parents may follow this tradition in different ways with some using grandparents’ names as their baby’s middle name.

Also, while some babies may be given a traditional Greek name, they may be known by a translated or shorter version, which is easier to say. So a little girl who’s officially named Konstantina may be known as Dina day to day, which also fits with the current cool nickname baby name trend.

How we chose the top Greek baby names

In order to round up the top Greek baby names, we first checked the top 100 baby names for boys and girls in England and Wales, as listed by ONS (latest list released May 2024). From these lists, we selected any with Greek origins.

We also included Greek names loved and chosen by parents on our Baby Names forum as well as names mentioned in our other baby names articles.

To give you as many ideas as possible, we’ve also included some lovely unique names, with Greek origins, which don’t feature in the ONS stats. We’ve also included some unisex Greek names for you to look at.

How to choose a Greek baby name

  • Learn about Ancient Greek mythology and the names which feature in it - such as Daphne, a mythical figure of grace and beauty and Rhea, mother of no less than three major Greek gods, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Then there’s Jason, a Greek mythical hero who became legendary for his quest to find the Golden Fleece.

  • Get to know the meanings of Greek names -  the girl flower name Iris means ‘rainbow’ as it was the name of the Greek goddess of the rainbow. Leander means ‘lion man’ and is the name of a Greek mythical character who swam miles each night to meet his true love, the high priestess Hero.

  • Fancy choosing a posh name for your little heir to the throne? Lots of classic Greek names have been historically used by aristocratic families and therefore fit the bill of well-to-do. For girls, these include Alexandra, which has been used by several queens. For boys, Atticus would certainly fit in well on a country estate.

  • Emulate Shakespeare, who loved giving his characters names from Ancient Greece including Ophelia and Cressida.

  • Choose a more contemporary cultural reference, such as the Greek name for girl name Theodosia, who Hamilton fans will recognise as a character and song in the smash hit musical by Lin Manuel Miranda.

What is a typical Greek name?

A typical Greek name for a boy is Theodoros, while Dorothea is a typical Greek girl name. Interestingly, these Greek baby names are known as twin names because they share an identical meaning - ‘Gift of God’. You could even consider them if you’re having boy/girl twins. How about Theo and Dot for short? What a cute sounding pair!

For boys in Greece, a popular name is Georgios, while over in the UK its English counterpart, George, is at number 3 in the ONS chart. Both names have the same meaning - farmer or earth worker. For girls, Katerina is very popular and means ‘pure’ while Dimitra (or Demetria) is another typical choice, evoking the goddess and earth mother, Demeter, from Greek mythology.

What are rare Greek names?

Rare Greek names appear in neither the ONS top 100 or in the most popular name lineups in Greece. The rare boy name Asterios, appears in several Ancient Greek myths and means ‘starry’. The rare Greek girl name Nefeli has an equally ethereal quality, as it means ‘cloud’.
