Mum's fury after transgender suicide teen sold hormones from illegal online clinic

A Cambridgeshire mum is calling for a new inquest to question doctors who were found to be offering unregulated hormone treatments online

A heartbroken Cambridgeshire mum of a transgender teenager who took his own life is calling for a second inquest after finding out he had hormone treatment from unregulated online doctors.

Jayden Lowe, 18, paid £30 a month for private therapy after facing a six-year wait with the NHS, his inquest heard.

Married doctors Mike and Helen Webberley have both received an interim suspension by the British Medical Council pending an investigation, after they set up their unregulated gender treatment service.

Jayden received hormone treatment in the post for "a few months" before he stepped in front of a train on September 28, 2018.

Jesus.

How very, very sad.

Bluestitch · 30/06/2019 10:02

How sad. The Webberlys should be in prison.

Chickenish · 30/06/2019 10:03

I am concerned that the inquest is reported as saying that the long wait for treatment was a factor.

Fairenuff · 30/06/2019 10:07

It's not a medical condition so no treatment is needed.

This poor person was suffering from a mental health condition that caused them to take their own life.

Unregulated selling of drugs on the internet should be illegal anyway, regardless of what they were for or who was selling them.

This child needed proper mental health support.

I fear the trans activists will use this young person's suicide as "proof" that transition should be quicker.

summerofresistance · 30/06/2019 10:13

I feel desperately sorry for the family, and for this young person's who's life has been so tragically cut short.

We are failing our young people. We need more money in mental health services for kids, but I can't see this government doing that.

OvaHere · 30/06/2019 10:17

Such a sad story. Jayden obviously had a lot going on that they were struggling with. The article mentions Jayden had Aspergers and was also attracted to girls. Aside from the issue of gender clinic waiting times proper and timely support for children on the spectrum is just as bad if not worse.

LangCleg · 30/06/2019 10:19

So, let me get this right.

A child who had been unpopular and bullied, who had Asperger's, was same sex oriented and was self-harming joined a school Pride club run by a transgender teacher and became persuaded that all their unhappiness was due to their "gender identity".

The Tavistock sent them a leaflet telling them to expect to be suicidal.

They got powerful drugs from an unlicensed clinic which addressed none of the underlying issues of a spectrum diagnosis, burgeoning sexuality, or self harm.

And the outcome was tragic.

This is absolutely horrendous. My heart goes out to the parents.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 30/06/2019 10:22

Jeeeeeesus.

You're right, Lang.

It's so sinister. "It's not a mental health disorder", and yet, so many of these young people have other mental health issues. I don't believe those issues will be resolved with developing vaginal atrophy, osteoporosis, coronary heart disease and cutting off their tits.

I'ts madness, and this poor family have to live with the consequences.

AlunWynsKnee · 30/06/2019 10:26

So much is made of the trans issue in the article but autism barely gets a mention. The child found acceptance and friendship through the Pride group, something so many autistic children long for.
As the parent of an autistic girl who can't get CAMHS to see her this story makes me scared.

littlbrowndog · 30/06/2019 10:28

Yes Lang. It’s horrific

OvaHere · 30/06/2019 10:31

Spot on Lang. My eyebrows nearly flew off when I read the bit about the leaflet saying they would be depressed and suicidal.

TheBullshitGoesOn · 30/06/2019 10:33

I feel so sorry for that family. So very sad.

And Lang your breakdown shows how much they have been let down.

And wtf with The Tavi sending them a leaflet telling them to expect to be suicidal. Completely against Samaritans guidance. Unforgivable.

ZebrasAreBras · 30/06/2019 10:34

Tragic case. The parents are noting that the Webberleys are unregulated, and that they would never have signed off treatment over the phone and onlline, had they known this.

The article seems to be concentrating on the long wait for treatment as being a factor.

However, this young person had received months of treatment prior to their suicide, and notwithstanding the side effects listed with taking testosterone, this suggests to me that they had pinned all their hopes on feeling better after taking T, but then found T wasn't the magic cure they thought it would be.

Jayden had reportedly just split with a girlfriend too - we really urgently need research into why so many young girls - usually lesbians -are wanting to transition, as I have long suspected that homophobia and the way lesbians are treated by society is a huge factor in so many lesbians wanting to transition.

Tragic, tragic case.

TeamUnicorn · 30/06/2019 10:37

What a heartbreaking situation, a severely depressed young person was truly failed by all the services around them. There was no interim care and it seems very little after the first suicide attempt.

These young people deserve better, and more timely input from mental health services is a must.

LizzieSiddal · 30/06/2019 10:39

I fear the trans activists will use this young person's suicide as "proof" that transition should be quicker.

I fear this too, it must not be allowed to happen but there seems to be a lack of joined up thinking with many in positions of power and influence.

NeurotrashWarrior · 30/06/2019 10:41

Wtf, normalising suicide now at the Tavistock? I'm

And then you have people hounding Prof Moore for wanting to ask questions about and research all of this in order to prevent self harm and suicide.

At her talk in Newcastle she mentioned another young person who committed suicide after transitioning.

The whole thing is a shit show car crash of the most appalling safeguarding.

Eaudear · 30/06/2019 10:43

I fear the trans activists will use this young person's suicide as "proof" that transition should be quicker.

Yes, I'm sure they will. Whilst also insisting that being transgender is not a mental illness and stating that it's highly offensive to suggest that it is.

Popchyk · 30/06/2019 10:44

Webberley didn't even meet Jayden.

"It was all done by phone and internet."

And Helen Webberley is weaponising these suicides. Here she is last week trying to blackmail the Royal College of GPs into having more trans representation on their steering group.

twitter.com/MyWebDoctorUK/status/1142380754669907968

"Two young trans people in my knowledge ended their lives on the train track this year".

Webberley doesn't mention that she is suspended by the GMC. Nor that Jayden's suicide happened under Webberley's own "care".

ScrimshawTheSecond · 30/06/2019 10:45

What an absolute tragedy. Poor kid. Failed repeatedly by the system. My heart breaks for the family left behind.

ZebrasAreBras · 30/06/2019 10:46

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3625184-Surge-in-girls-switching-gender-Gilligan-in-The-Times

This thread is highly relevant here. Mental health issues, ASD, and same-sex orientation are all being treated as an "identity" disorder - and transition/cross sex hormone treatment is seen as the cure-all by TRAs. It's not.

SarahTancredi · 30/06/2019 10:48

Tragic story.

I'm.assuming they never actually ever met them.either as it states it was all done via internet and phone. How can you get a deep for a person or whether they are being coerced or abused or being controlled etc of they arent sat in front of you. If you cant see or feel the dynamic between the person they bring with them etc

These two drs should be struck off permanently Angry

SarahTancredi · 30/06/2019 10:48

Feel for a person

Stupid auto correct

LizzieSiddal · 30/06/2019 10:48

I hope bigger newspapers pick up this story.
