Mum's fury after transgender suicide teen sold hormones from illegal online clinic

A Cambridgeshire mum is calling for a new inquest to question doctors who were found to be offering unregulated hormone treatments online

A heartbroken Cambridgeshire mum of a transgender teenager who took his own life is calling for a second inquest after finding out he had hormone treatment from unregulated online doctors.

Jayden Lowe, 18, paid £30 a month for private therapy after facing a six-year wait with the NHS, his inquest heard.

Married doctors Mike and Helen Webberley have both received an interim suspension by the British Medical Council pending an investigation, after they set up their unregulated gender treatment service.

Jayden received hormone treatment in the post for "a few months" before he stepped in front of a train on September 28, 2018.

(I hope by speaking out, the family have highlighted the dangers of what is happening, and more people open their eyes. If not, that makes me very afraid*

The only thing scarier than this is the fact that had they managed to access and affirm.straight away somewhere else we probably never would have heard of Jayden. They would be a statistic no one dares mention as it would prove it's notthe amazing cure all, all these activists are claiming it is.

We only know of this because while waiting lists are so long, while people who point out its autistic children and lesbians falling prey to this are shut down, theres something else and someone else to blame.

beagadorsrock · 01/07/2019 09:31

In that Mirror story they refer to a statement by the Webberlys saying 'the treatment is reversible'. Is that not an outright 'unknown' (if not even a lie)?

JessicaWakefieldSV · 01/07/2019 09:38

I feel so bad for Jayden’s family right now. My DD has autism, late diagnosis, and it really feels like a battle to get help or even just understanding- I had yet another email from a teacher last week insisting my DD get better at communication and this teacher ‘knew she was capable’, the fact she has severe anxiety around school seems lost on this biology teacher who considers herself an ‘expert’ in autism. I cannot imagine how I would cope if my DD’s gender non conformity was somehow used to convince her she would feel better as a boy. I just find this case so sad and as a parent of an autistic girl, really scary. Teachers and persons of authority can be patronising and controlling when your child has special needs. This must of felt like an impossible situation and scary and confusing for Jayden. One thing I’m aware of, both with my child and some youtubers, is that those on the spectrum often don’t recognise troubling emotions until they become very serious. This is a heartbreaking story and I am just appalled the Webberleys can carry on doing this kind of damage.,

I do think that there should be a second inquest, as Jayden's family have asked.

I'm also hoping that the GMC are investigating this fully, now that the inquest is over. Maybe that would give Jayden's parents some answers.

The GMC need to look at the information that Gender GP holds on Jayden for starters. Cos I genuinely don't think that a full team of clinicians made that initial assessment. Psychologists and therapists making assessments (that a patient is actually the opposite sex) without even meeting the patient? Really?

Oh, and of course the clinic was operating illegally at the time, let's not forget that.

If Jayden's parents were to investigate legal action against GenderGP (via crowdfunding), I think a lot of people would support that. GenderGP needs to be accountable.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 01/07/2019 11:23

Telling people who may have literal thinking that suicide ideation is to be expected is criminal.

That poor family. I hope they get their second inquest and that the answers help them in their grief. Just horrific.

How does it work with illegal clinics and prescriptions? Do they post it? How do they get the pads?

Is there no code or data base pharmacists have to type in ?

Or do they send the medication. How do unregistered clinics get the medication? Dont they have to have a license to purchase or could they he any old shit off the internet?

SarahTancredi · 01/07/2019 12:29

And how do they check medical records to make sure they arent prescribing drugs that will interact with stuff other drs have prescribed?

Satterthwaite · 01/07/2019 12:46

Terrifying, isn't it?

The Reddit transgender U.K. board is absolutely full of this stuff.

SarahTancredi · 01/07/2019 12:55

So there appears to be a couple of questionnaires ( where people could lie )

And one face to face meeting? Then a prescription.

And if gender go are so good how come appointments are available that quickly. You couldn't get a tattoo from a reasonable studio that quickly.

And where are the restrictions on the internet making sure no one under 18 is purchasing or getting medications?

So much there that could go wrong.

Doesnt autism fir example require a week long assessment. Actually being viewed for that time ?

And how do you get the gp to give a blood test for no reason? Would that not flag up that someone was about to do something ?

JessicaWakefieldSV · 01/07/2019 13:02

It depends but if you get a proper psychiatric assessment that is more widely accepted, the actual process takes around a month, or more. Our daughter had more appointments than we did, probably about 3 on her own, one with us, plus teacher reports and previous psychologist reports. Her father and I had a 4 hour meeting where we answered very specific and difficult questions which get marked at the end to help determine her overall assessment. It’s very lengthy, it was difficult for us in particular as we had to remember things from many years before, and they’re really looking in older people for any indication behaviour has been learnt- in our case from her autistic dad. And of course at the end we aren’t getting hormones or anything which would require, in my opinion, medical tests.

Trying to get thyroid hormones for actual medical conditions which affect every function and every cell in the human body, even with test results, is harder it seems than a young troubled person getting puberty blockers or sex hormones.

SarahTancredi · 01/07/2019 13:07

jessica

Is it also true that for some of these conditions it also requires parents to do a parenting course on top?

As you say all you get is a piece of paper. No medication or anything.

This is bloody scary that you can get hormones and affect your body for life having met them once.

Wheres the follow up care?

LangCleg · 01/07/2019 13:14

Here’s a recent GenderGp timeline from a 17 year FtM

Fucking hell.

Two months, and a month of that was the Christmas break and waiting for GP to do bloods.

I feel sick.

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 13:14

Originally, you didn’t need a face to face meeting with GenderGP, just Skype consultations.

That’s still the case with trans identifying males (testosterone is a controlled drug, oestrogen is not).

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 13:16

And yes, it took multiple assessments and tests with an ed psych before my son was diagnosed as ASD - about a year’s process all in all (and the wait to see an occupational therapist was 3 years).

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 13:20

In-person appointments only began in November 2018 (from the Webberley’s own website: gendergp.co.uk/patient-update-from-dr-mike-webberley/) so Jayden would’ve had an online only assessment.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 01/07/2019 13:24

That is so bad. In desperation early on in my illnesses, I saw a doctor based in NZ at the time, British, who did skype consults for hormone disorders, specialising in the thyroid. He did order tests first, quite extensive, before prescribing anything. But as he turned out to be a bit of a dick and not listening to me, he put me on every hormone under the sun and I blew up like a balloon and he just told me to eat more protein... I checked his credentials and contacted the NZ medical council. They told me he was in violation of his licence prescribing and not having had a face to face appointment.

SarahTancredi · 01/07/2019 13:27

None of them are reporting followup care.

So what are they paying for with the monthly fee? One was 17 one was a 20 yr old student where was the money even coming from ?

They really are having the NHS do all the work for them . Get the bloods done . Treat them in a&e when the side effects kick in and they get paid monthly for what?

OldCrone · 01/07/2019 13:35

How does it work with illegal clinics and prescriptions? Do they post it?

The Webberleys work with Clear Chemist, who will supply the drugs by post once the Webberleys have written the prescription.

SarahTancredi · 01/07/2019 13:45

Ok so looking at that website it has I'm capital letters about proof of identity

So when the webberlys order through them how do they get round that as surely their would he checks run? Wouldnt they flag up as not being legal?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/07/2019 13:51

Just adding the Mail link to this story. They aren't pulling any punches about the Webberleys:

He was buying the £360-a-year treatment from Helen and Mike Webberley, who have since moved their clinic Online GP Services Ltd from Wales to Spain after being refused a licence from the NHS.

The couple have also been suspended by the GMC having been told their care 'fell below the standards expected' in the treatment of three transgender patients prescribed puberty blockers and hormones. They have treated children as young as 12, it has emerged.

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 14:09

None of the established private gender clinics (GenderCare, London Transgender Clinic etc) will prescribe to under 18s.
I think they might let a 17 year old make an appointment to take place after their 18th, but that’s all.

Until the Webberleys started up, the only option for minors was the NHS service at Tavistock and Portman or taking your child abroad (see Susie Green for an example).

JessicaWakefieldSV · 01/07/2019 14:09

This is such an upsetting story. The similarities to my daughter, without the gender dysphoria, are quite shocking. This could have been very different for Jayden.

One thing I was thinking of bringing to the Daily Mails attention, is that a child isn’t denied treatment, they’re denied hormones. While it’s not adequate, there is therapy and support available. Why not concentrate on improving the types of therapy available to young people while they wait to become an adult and able to access hormones if they still want to, on their own. The wait and watch approach is absolutely the right thing to do, but along with watching we need better therapy and improved resources for CAMHS too. Autism is so misunderstood in girls, I just despair at the senseless loss. The pain when my DD was having suicidal thoughts, it was almost unbearable. I got no support, no one at all offered me anything and I tried so many different organisations and our GP of course. These parents, and Jayden, should not suffer like this.

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 14:12

Clear Chemist and the Webberleys have some kind of business arrangement - not sure if they own or part-own Clear Chemist themselves?
