Mum's fury after transgender suicide teen sold hormones from illegal online clinic

A Cambridgeshire mum is calling for a new inquest to question doctors who were found to be offering unregulated hormone treatments online

www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/transgender-treatment-nhs-webberley-jayden-16504026

A heartbroken Cambridgeshire mum of a transgender teenager who took his own life is calling for a second inquest after finding out he had hormone treatment from unregulated online doctors.

Jayden Lowe, 18, paid £30 a month for private therapy after facing a six-year wait with the NHS, his inquest heard.

Married doctors Mike and Helen Webberley have both received an interim suspension by the British Medical Council pending an investigation, after they set up their unregulated gender treatment service.

Jayden received hormone treatment in the post for "a few months" before he stepped in front of a train on September 28, 2018.

This comment from Jayden's Mum is important & echoes best practice & guidance from Samaritans:

She said delays in Jayden’s treatment were a “significant factor” but added: “The precise details of what was going through his mind will never be known.”

That the Webberley's are seeking to draw causation with treatment times demonstrates yet again that they do not understand or respect Safeguarding, mental health or Duty of Care to children & vulnerable adults.

Poor Jayden. Poor, poor parents. It doesn't bear imagining. And I hope the Webberleys get into big trouble for their appalling conduct, conduct that contributed to this tragedy.

I believe it is possible that a person could believe they are trans when in reality they need some mental health care. The huge problem is that no one is allowed to question someone’s trans status.

I got talking with a woman on a train last week. Turns out her daughter was training to become a psychiatrist. She'd been working for CAMHS and had encountered a number of gender questioning kids. She had recognized these patients had other issues (ASD, abuse, trauma, internalised homophobia) but CAMHS policy was that nothing but the gender issues must be explored. To unpick the other issues was seen as conversion therapy. The poor woman was very troubled by this and very relieved when she moved to another department.

I recommended Mumsnet if her daughter wanted to offload in an anonymous forum and told her how many teachers and NHS staff come here to do exactly that. Her mum was very interested in how popular Mumsnet FWR is, and pleased to know you don't need to be a parent to take part.

Poor Jayden.

Clearly the system (and I include CAMHS in this) is fucked.

Predatory doctors out to make a buck by prescribing controlled substances and not making mental health support/close supervision mandatory isn’t the answer.

OldCrone · 30/06/2019 13:51

It's appalling that CAMHS are taking this attitude, and it's only going to get worse if the only people who can tolerate working there are those who fully embrace trans ideology.

It is adults running translobby groups who whilst claiming to advocate for young people who question their gender identity have & continue to push this restriction so that professionals cannot use their knowledge & experience to best support children & young people.

It is a systemic Safeguarding & Duty of Care failure.

Those politicians who have enabled this and failed to scrutinise lobby groups who are not informed by mental health, psychology, child development, child protection professional background are complicit.

Popchyk · 30/06/2019 15:39

She had recognized these patients had other issues (ASD, abuse, trauma, internalised homophobia)

And yet Mike Webberley (a trained GP) did not recognise Jayden's other issues.

Didn't even meet Jayden.

The Webberleys have issued a statement. About how it is all the NHS's fault.

gendergp.co.uk/the-nhs-must-take-urgent-steps-to-provide-interim-care-solutions-for-trans-people/

"Dr Mike Webberley, a consultant of 35 years’ experience with the NHS, assessed Jayden, together with GenderGP’s multidisciplinary team of nurses, psychologists and therapists".

I sincerely doubt that this team of nurses, psychologists and therapists were involved in assessing Jayden's case.

I suspect that Jayden asked for testosterone and Mike Webberley prescribed it alone without reference to anybody else.

Perhaps Jayden's parents can ask to see these multi-disciplinary assessments. Maybe the GMC are already investigating.

OldCrone · 30/06/2019 15:47

Mike Webberley (a trained GP) did not recognise Jayden's other issues.

Mike Webberley is not a GP. He's a gastroenterology specialist.

Here he describes how well qualified he is to prescribe hormone treatment to children without meeting them.

The head of Gender GPs 'theraputic services' is a male transperson with a counselling qualification.

Ive read some of their 'assessments' & they are not informed by knowledge of trauma, abuse, Safeguarding or Child protection frameworks.

R0wantrees · 30/06/2019 15:49

The issues which were raised at Dr Mike Webbereley's suspension were all (I think from memory) to do with how he treated young females.

Shock

I am extremely concerned by the fact that this tragedy will undoubtedly be "weaponised" to reinforce the argument for harmful medicalisation pathways and further transideology.

It would be hard to argue that lack of hormone treatment was the problem. Jayden was on testosterone, but what was lacking was mental health support.

I wonder if Mermaids were involved at all, given their endorsement of the Webberly illegal clinic.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were behind the "information" pack that arrived in the post.

That poor child. It doesn't matter what other problems were present; severe depression should have been picked up and treated immediately.

I am also extremely concerned that people lole the webberlys can effectively use this get out of jail free card. They can afford to be reckless and and promote their services as a quick fix via these troubled teens and young adults all whilst having the unacceptable wait ( and of course its unacceptable people are having to wait so long to be seen) from NHS services as something to blame and take the heat off them when it all goes wrong.

HermioneWeasley · 30/06/2019 19:43

Poor Jayden, and his parents

The Webberleys are despicable

My heart breaks for this generation of lesbians- there is nobody standing up for them

Voice0fReason · 30/06/2019 22:53

Poor Jayden, such a tragic loss for the family
Clearly very much loved and accepted by family and friends.
The illegally acquired hormones weren't the solution. Proper mental health support was what Jayden needed.

RiotAndAlarum · 01/07/2019 06:27

Jayden's parents were doing more thsnparents usually do to prevent harm. The smallholding life, caring gor and taking responsibility for animals, helping J get a job at the co-op, working at the joinery. All the thibgs which ought to be antidotes to hothouse virtual reality on Tumblr and so on, and yet this impossible identity ideology still got its hooks in and the Webberlys made money off it. It's just horrible.

TheBigBallOfOil · 01/07/2019 06:35

This is an appalling story and as the parent of an ASD pre teen it chills my blood. More and more I think all I can do is screen him from this lunatic ideology as much as possible, because once it has its hooks in, all that state services will do is reinforce it.
Thank god for the narrow range of interests. All he wants to look at online at the moment are cars and old episodes of top gear.

InsulatedCup · 01/07/2019 09:02

The gendergp press release is appalling. They conflate cross sex hormones (not reversible) with blockers (reversible in some ways). Then use anecdotal data from their own patient list (self selecting, no independent measures, no comparators with Jayden's particular range of issues) to justify the prescription. And then, somehow manage to say that the treatment they gave, which was the correct one - they say- didn't avoid suicide.

One thing is true. There is nothing available for young people on the waiting list for the gender clinic. No other health professional dares discuss the issue. There is only other trans people telling you that without hormone treatment and surgery your life isn't worth living. It's a complete and utter mess, and vulnerable young men and women, many of whom are autistic, are the victims.

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 09:16

It certainly doesn’t make any sense that the Tavi scaremongered about suicide - they’ve said that their own figures are very low, can’t remember the reference - was it Polly Carmichael on the Channel 4 Transkids programme?

HelenaHandcart · 01/07/2019 09:17

I have Asperger's. I know that each of us understand and interprets language differently, but I know that my brain would have interpreted being told that I would feel suicidal literally, as a fact, not just something to bear in mind. I'm 40 now, and my brain still does that even though I am aware of it and try to mitigate it.

It is bordering on the criminal communicating in such a manner, with children (and adults) who are likely to interpret words literally, such as with people with autism. Especially when, as I understand it, there is more gender non-conformity and gender dysphoria in children with autism/Asperger's especially, so will be seeking help.

This poor dead child, and their family have been exploited during a time of great vulnerability. This is the logical end-point of this kind of manipulative and exploitative ideology and the systems and people that allow it - dead humans. I hope by speaking out, the family have highlighted the dangers of what is happening, and more people open their eyes. If not, that makes me very afraid.

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 09:25

The most common starting medication prescribed by the Webberley’s is Testogel.

The side effects listed are those noted by men using it (of course!) but it’s the only info available. Depressive moods are listed as a side effect.

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/6808/pil

The idea that these drugs can be taken with very little, indirect, supervision (read the Reddit transgenderuk for details) is really horrifying.
