Mum's fury after transgender suicide teen sold hormones from illegal online clinic

A Cambridgeshire mum is calling for a new inquest to question doctors who were found to be offering unregulated hormone treatments online

www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/transgender-treatment-nhs-webberley-jayden-16504026

A heartbroken Cambridgeshire mum of a transgender teenager who took his own life is calling for a second inquest after finding out he had hormone treatment from unregulated online doctors.

Jayden Lowe, 18, paid £30 a month for private therapy after facing a six-year wait with the NHS, his inquest heard.

Married doctors Mike and Helen Webberley have both received an interim suspension by the British Medical Council pending an investigation, after they set up their unregulated gender treatment service.

Jayden received hormone treatment in the post for "a few months" before he stepped in front of a train on September 28, 2018.

I complained to the regulators about the Clear Chemist site nearly a month ago regarding their use of a suspended doctor.
medicine-seller-register.mhra.gov.uk/report/

Nothing appears to have been done, and I haven't heard back from them despite asking to be informed of any action taken.

LizzieSiddal · 01/07/2019 14:37

Does their move to Spain mean they will no longer need to carry out any face to face appointments?

Popchyk · 01/07/2019 14:38

OldCrone, thanks for the link.

www.clearchemist.co.uk/doctor/talk-to-a-doctor

"Clear Chemist’s online doctor, Dr Webberley, can help you with all of your health concerns. There are a number of ways to contact her and she will aim to answer your queries as soon as she can. ‘Online GP Services LTD’ can prescribe or arrange treatment that can be sent to you through the post or arrange for you to pick it up from one of our pharmacies".

No mention of Helen Webberley being suspended from the GMC.

I will also complain about it.

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 14:51

They seem to have a couple of nurses doing their face to face appointments in the U.K. now (Sally Coles and Kim Stephenson):

One thing I find very interesting...

Jayden committed suicide after taking hormone medication of an unknown description for two months; not while waiting for medication, not while waiting for treatment, but two months after receiving the prescription.

This suggests to me that Jayden had begun taking the medication.

I know, from experience, that medication that affects, inhibits or enhances oestrogen levels in females can have bizarre outcomes. My sister had an extraordinary reaction to clomid, for example, a medication that blocks the oestrogen receptors in the hypothalamus. When she called the clinic that prescribed it, they knew that, in some women, the medication "turned them into axe murderers".

And that's pretty much a direct quote.

I've also heard reports from transman that testosterone strongly affected their mental state...to the point that it changed their personality and they were so disturbed by the change, they stopped taking it.

I'll stop my comment there as I don't want to go further. But it's worrying that young people are being encouraged to take meds that might have significant adverse effects. Very worrying.

I wonder at the identity of the person described as a transwoman teacher. I'm aware of a school local to me that outsources the running of their LGBT group to a local trans lobbying group; the people running the groups are not teachers. If this is the case at Jayden's school what were the qualifications of the person running the group and what oversight did the school have in place re safeguarding/DBS.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/07/2019 16:53

DuMondeB Sally Coles has a transgender child!

Christ on a motherfucking bike. I despair.
When this all goes tits up and people involved in this are finally held accountable for their part in widespread child abuse, it's going to be impossible to to point out we were wildly waving the receipts months and years beforehand.

from Gender GP website, 'Therapy Team' lead:

"Marianne Oakes (Dip Couns)
About Marianne

Marianne Oakes is a person-centred counsellor working as head of the psychological support team at GenderGP, an online clinic specialising in the multidisciplinary treatment of gender questioning patients. In her role at GenderGP, Marianne works with transgender and gender-questioning clients providing both one to one therapy and couples counselling. Marianne came into this particular branch of therapy after struggling to find a counsellor with the right experience and qualifications to help her with her own journey as a transgender woman.

Over the years she has made many friends who also identify as transgender and in many cases their partners. Marianne has also witnessed her own family’s struggles coming to terms with her gender identity, an experience which has given her the unique insight she brings to her own practice.

While Marianne has a particular affinity with trans identified adults, she is also keen to work more closely with gender questioning children and their families, offering psychological support for the children themselves, and more ambitiously, setting up group therapy online for parents. Marianne aims to create a non-judgmental space in which parents can talk openly about their own issues in relation to their child’s transition."

all the people listed are 'person centred counsellors', not MH professionals.

This is deeply concerning.

Gender GP is an online unregulated business owned by two doctors currently suspended from practising medicine in the UK

Its MO is 'Gender Affirmation'

I’ve been looking for a nurse Kim Stephenson located in Brighton/Hove.

Not found any leads on a nurse yet, but I did find a mother of a trans child who started medical transition AGED 11.
Mother runs the parent support group for Allsorts Brighton:

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 17:23

Holy fuck. That Kim Stephenson IS a nurse (and there is only one Kim Stephenson registered with the NMC in the south east).

So BOTH of the nurses on the GenderGP payroll have trans children, who ‘came out’ before the age of 12.

This needs highlighting

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/07/2019 18:08

From Reddit r/transgenderUK, written by a 20 year old male person, and discussing the sole 40min phone/skype call and a questionnaire they ask you to undertake before they issue a formal diagnosis - the only gatekeeping before they dish out the pills, by the look of it.

QUESTIONER: That was really useful, thanks for sharing! Quick question - did they require you to have a diagnosis of gender identity disorder from a therapist before they'd accept you?

OP, RESPONDING: No not at all, I am under the impression the questionnaire and first counselling session gives them the information they need to diagnose you. A lot of the questions in the questionnaire lean into leading you to provide answers that fit their framing, so my interpretation is that these are more like formalities rather than being legitimate gatekeeping from my own point of view.

They aren't doctors, they're fucking dealers.

blankcheque · 01/07/2019 18:09

Are there any programmes aimed at teenagers mental health or self acceptance? I think all this need to change is the issue. It's a carrot on a stick. So you change something, it doesn't fix how you feel and you look for something else or become even more depressed.

It's heartbreaking.

FloralBunting · 01/07/2019 18:14

So BOTH of the nurses on the GenderGP payroll have trans children, who ‘came out’ before the age of 12.

There will always be support for cult members who remain faithful.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/07/2019 18:22

Open access google doc by the OP, linked on that page confirms:

Very first enquiry made to Gender GP: 14th August 2017
Tablets in hand: 8th February 2018

< 6 months from first contact to popping HRT, on the basis of a couple of phone calls and Drs Webberley receiving upfront payment of a few hundred pounds Shock
(And that's WITH OP's own GP stalling a bit, so it could be even faster.)

Interesting footnote suggests patients are seemingly asked to sign up to agreeing not to leave negative reviews:

Finally if anyone from the Gender GP team is reading this and would like me to remove it please contact me at [redacted email] and I can take it down immediately, however as I have interpreted it, sharing experiences of the service is not prohibited under the terms I signed to.

OldCrone · 01/07/2019 18:23

Also on the 'therapy team' with Gender GP is Jackie Swarbrick.

Jackie is a person-centred counsellor who specialises in working with Transgender, non-binary or gender-questioning people, and spouses, partners, parents and family members of those who have identified as having gender identity issues.

Jackie is in the somewhat unusual position of having significant personal experience of gender identity from various sources; her ex-spouse has transitioned, she has a dual gender child and her husband is bi-gender. This gives her a great deal of empathy and insight into the emotional turmoil and confusion gender variance can create for the individual and wider family from different perspectives. Jackie has a private practice in West Cornwall where she sees adults and young people one to one, and she also works via Skype thereby giving face to face access to those who cannot attend same room sessions for whatever reason.

Singasonga · 01/07/2019 18:28

What's the difference between being bi-gender and dual gender?

R0wantrees · 01/07/2019 18:30

summary from Kim Stephenson's speech.
It was very clear how close she & her adult child are.

Her very young son was distressed & being bullied for not conforming to sex based stereotypes.
Her young son showed high levels of emotional distress (including serious self harm age 8)
She googled "my son wants to be a girl" & found US sites
She watched a program about 'trans kids' with her child & they both decided/'recognised' this was what was the 'answer'
She phoned Mermaids & spoke to a 'Mum' who understood
She took information from the internet to 'educate' the GP
She & her child attended Mermaids residential camps
She took her child to US to be medically treated due to her sons' young age (11?) rather than being treated in the UK because "better a daughter than a dead son"

(Mermaids has consistantly signposted parents & chlidren to GenderGP via the website despite prosecutions in UK and both Drs facing professional disciplinaries)

R0wantrees · 01/07/2019 18:37

Gender GP & Mermaids charity have demonstrated repeatedly that they do not understand or respect Safeguarding & Child Protection.

They seem inextricably linked, failing vulnerable children & their families.
