Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Enid

This is Bigsy, our Goldendoodle pup, photos are 8 weeks and maybe 3 months? He's 4.5 months now, I'll try and find a more recent pic as he's looking less puppyish but still so cute :)

Tsmummy he is absolutely gorgeous! I'm such a massive animal lover! 😍

Tsmummy08 · 25/03/2018 09:13

This morning... he's a lovely boy, great temperament - although slightly mental!

Thanks for the spot analysis Bo. The ones I have at the moment seem to be reaction spots rather than the pore-clogged, under the surface ones. But now I've had the first batch, they don't seem to be increasing much. Do you think it is likely that I'm having a reaction to the Vichy vit C? The ingredients looked ok. I really, really don't want to have a problem with it.

Happy belated birthday Pupsie from me too! Flowers

Mint - for honeymoon destinations (is it for you?) the first place that pops into my head is Santorini. It's one of my favourite islands. It's pretty touristy now though because it is just so stunning. The view of the caldera is amazing and unique. Milos is also a gorgeous island. I tend to prefer the smaller islands as you really feel like you are on an island. Crete is just massive!

Tsmummy - your puppy is adorable!! He's grown and changed so quickly. I would love a dog but not sure I am ready (or have the time) for the commitment at the moment.

Pupsiecola · 25/03/2018 10:36

Thanks for the birthday wishes; it was actually October Smile.

mintmagnummm · 25/03/2018 10:53

Sophie yes it's for me 😊. I'll have a look at both of those islands thank you x

mintmagnummm · 25/03/2018 10:55

My acne rash that I get after taking antibiotics is spreading rapidly despite taking Piriton daily since starting the antibiotics and continuing once I finished them too! Rash always seems to come up a few days after I've finished the course 🤔😏. Going to carry on with the Piriton so I feel like I'm actually doing something but it's really not helped!

Lonesurvivor · 25/03/2018 11:58

Tsmummy that puppy is gorgeous😍.
When's the wedding mint?

SophieLion · 25/03/2018 12:12

Ah lovely Mint (the honeymoon, not the rash Grin).
Happy to help if you need more advice or ideas. Which month it is for?

SophieLion · 25/03/2018 12:12

Argh..... is it (Not it is!!)

mintmagnummm · 25/03/2018 12:26

Lone and Sophie it's August next year Smile

EnidButton · 25/03/2018 14:23

A late happy birthday from me Pupsie! 🎂

Ts Oh my god he's gorgeous! Look at those big paws! Please can I pop over and spend the afternoon stroking his ears? I can bring cake.

EnidButton · 25/03/2018 14:24

Pupsie Oh was it October? Grin That's very late then.

JDSTER · 25/03/2018 15:36

Ts I misunderstood about Biore. I’ll pass on moisturiser but thank you.

Pupsiecola · 25/03/2018 16:15

Thanks Enid. Yep, almost halfway to the next one! Appreciate the sentiment though :-)

EnidButton · 25/03/2018 16:42

Have a half birthday! Like when kids say they're 7 and a half. The half is important. Grin

JDSTER · 25/03/2018 16:53

Bespoke honeymoon advice for Mint. Cute dogs too. Fantastic thread that this is Smile

SophieLion · 25/03/2018 18:06

Mint - congratulations! ThanksGlitterball

August is obviously a super busy time of year in Greece so make sure you book well in advance. I can maybe suggest hotels too (depending on what island or area you are interested in).

mintmagnummm · 25/03/2018 20:13

JDSTER it is bloody great isn't it! We are like a family Grin
Sophie thank you, we are debating whether we can actually afford a honeymoon after this wedding! It's not a massive wedding in fact it's very small and intimate but we are paying for it all ourselves so money is a struggle. We will be asking for donations instead of gifts but there's no knowing how much we will end up with until the day.

EnidButton · 25/03/2018 21:29

Do you usually go on holiday abroad each year Mint? That could be the honeymoon if you postpone it until after the wedding. It doesn't have to be the week straight after either, you might get some good deals in September?

mintmagnummm · 26/03/2018 06:14

Enid not every year no but we do try to go when we can. It has to be during the school summer holidays because of my son so couldn't go in September.

SophieLion · 26/03/2018 09:04

A small intimate wedding sounds lovely, Mint.

Bo, I took some photos of the Velvet Touch this morning but for some reason I can't upload photos. Got fed up of trying so have just typed up the ingredients lists myself (see below). Pharmacy I was in today didn't have any samples but will try to get hold of some for me. Price in pharmacy is around 23 EUR (but will double check with another one later today). Online through a Greek website which sells pharmacy cosmetics etc at cheaper prices you can get it for around 12 EUR.

Frezyderm is pronounced pretty much as you read it: the "e" in Frezy is short and the accent is on the first syllable of the word. No, doesn't sound particularly Greek!

Velvet Touch SPF50 with colour:
Isododecane, Dimethicone/Bis-Isobutyl PPG-20 Crosspolymer, Octocrylene, Titanium Dioxide, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Dibutyl Adipate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract, Ethyl Ferulate, Disodium Uridine Phosphate, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, Dimethicone/ Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Polyglyceryl-5 Trioleate, Glass Beads, Caprylyl Glycol, Silica, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499.

Glass beads?! ConfusedHmm

Hi everyone, just a quick question for those of you with rosacea, what cleansers do you use please? I tried the dhc oil cleanser last night and this morning my cheeks are very red much worse than normal! I've tried clinique ttdo balm, that didn't irritate my rosacea but it gave me spots. I usually use simple face wash gel, perhaps I should just stick to that!

yongnian · 26/03/2018 09:56

tsmummy your puppy is just gorgeous!
mint ooh congrats! How exciting. Seconding Santorini.
cad welcome. I have rosacea and I use LRP Toleriane Dermo cleanser in the am and Bioderma Crealine to remove make up and plain rice bran oil as a cleanser.
Have arrived at this combo after much trial and error and i find it bland enough to not to irritate, efficient enough to actually cleanse and the rice bran oil is soothing and nourishing. (I use food grade just from supermarket)

botemp · 26/03/2018 11:20

Well it does say Fantastic in the title, hence it must be a fantastic thread Grin

turkey, I've heard mixed things about special 'pool' products as the chlorine may react with certain chemicals in those products which makes them potentially carcinogenic. I'm wondering if a waterproof SPF wouldn't do the same thing as it forms a protective film, the only issue would be needing to apply it ahead of time so the film sets properly and a good cleanser to take it off.

Tsn, I'm ovulating and at risk of eating anything in sight, including Enid's proffered cake, adding in adorable puppies in the mix is not good for my sanity I think Envy
