This is the support thread for the egg fast. I have based the rules on Jimmy Moore's Eggfest. Please note that this is an experimental fast and may not be suitable for people with underlying health conditions. It is intended for people that are already following a low carb - high fat diet and are trying to break a stall or lose the last few pounds to reach their goal weight.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor or nutritionist. If you follow this fast and have any issues at all such as feeling unwell then seriously consider stopping the fast immediately. Alternatively wait until a few of us have tried it first!

1. Eat at least six eggs per day
This is not a calorie-restricted diet so eat to fullness.

2. Buy the best quality eggs you can
Free range eggs may contain more omega 3 fats and vitamin D.

3. Eat one tablespoon of butter per egg
Coconut oil, olive oil and mayo may also be used.

4. You may add up to one ounce of cheese per egg if desired
Make sure your cheese is low carb.

5. Drink as much water as you can: at least 2-4 litres MINIMUM
Black or bulletproof coffee, black tea, green tea and herbal tea can be added if required.

6. Add salt and keep taking your usual vitamins (if taken)
Consider extra magnesium and potassium to prevent cramps.
If you suffer from constipation then flaxseed may help.

7. Exercise daily
Even a short walk will help maintain lean muscle mass.

8. Eat three meals a day; if not hungry eat one egg
Your appetite will be reduced but keep eating to preserve lean muscle mass.

9. Follow the egg fast for three days; five days may give better results
You will be sick of eggs by the third day.

10. Transition back to your normal diet
E.g. the day after eat two egg meals and one normal meal (whatever you usually eat), the day after that eat one egg meal and two normal meals. Consider keeping on eating at least two eggs a day to maintain the effects of the fast.

There is a blogger who has recently done an egg fast (i breathe im hungry) and she has come up with some fab meals using eggs butter and various cheeses. I intend following her receipes for the first couple of days.

SchroSawMargeryDaw Sat 19-Jul-14 15:30:47

Woo, our own shiney thread!

Do you think water flavouring would stop it working? Like the Robinsons tiny bottle squeezy things, only it's Oasis. Wondering if I need to cut it out as I don't drink coffee or tea.

StuntNun Sat 19-Jul-14 16:16:23

Sammck her cream cheese and egg pancakes look yum.

Sammck Sat 19-Jul-14 16:36:20

I've made the pancakes before and they are really good with a fruit sauce made from berries and sweetner. They need to be really thin on the pan to cook right though

SchroSawMargeryDaw Sat 19-Jul-14 16:53:39

Sammck I do small thick ones, they seem to cook much better in coconut oil. I make peanut butter ones as well and banana/nutella ones for the kids.

ihatethecold Sat 19-Jul-14 17:12:09

So do you eat 6 eggs plus 3 meals a day.

SchroSawMargeryDaw Sat 19-Jul-14 17:26:28

No, just the eggs. smile Can be more than 6, just at least.

Sammck Sat 19-Jul-14 17:43:23

Schro I have a ceramic frying pan which is useless, though I must admit I've not tried using coconut oil on it yet

StuntNun Sat 19-Jul-14 17:50:56

Here's a link to the I Breathe I'm Hungry blog that Sammck mentioned. She recommends starting out on simple egg recipes then branching out on day three when you're sick of eggs.

SchroSawMargeryDaw Sat 19-Jul-14 18:01:38

Sammck I have a useless frying pan too. Nothing ever sticks when I use coconut oil, it's amazing.

StuntNun Sat 19-Jul-14 18:14:17

I fried sausages in lard today and it was a lot easier.

Hello JeSuis, haven't seen you for ages. Your name always makes me sing 'Tilly, Tom and Tiny'.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot Sat 19-Jul-14 19:44:16

hello stuntnun!

Apologies for the abrupt place marking, I was about to sort out DD2s bedtime but didn't want to lose you!

I'm due a name change, but won't do it until I find a suitable similar earworm! grin

Well this is exciting, a whole thread dedicated to eggs!

I will definitely do it for mon-wed, but have an all day and dinner meeting on Thursday so can't do it then.

Has anyone doing it done an egg fast before?

ihatethecold Sun 20-Jul-14 08:22:27

I think I'm going to do this for 3 days starting tomorrow.
Can I ask. What is low carb cheese?

StuntNun Sun 20-Jul-14 08:57:43

I made the I Breathe I'm Hungry low carb crepes for breakfast to see what they were like. I left out the sweetener and cinnamon and they were delicious, like omelettes. I used two eggs, two ounces cream cheese and two ounces of butter so they exactly meet the requirements of the egg fast.

ihatethecold just check the carb count on your cheese, it should be trace, 0g or 0.1g carbs per 100g. Some cheeses can be much higher than that. It isn't hard to find low carb cheeses but you do need to be aware that not all cheeses are low carb.

ihatethecold Sun 20-Jul-14 09:05:00

Thanks stuntnun.
Your crepes look nice.
I'm hungry!

StuntNun Sun 20-Jul-14 09:35:43

I thought I would post some meal ideas here. I know it's quite obvious: eggs, eggs and more eggs, but I think I'll find it easier to stay on track if I can scan down a list of meals rather than standing in front of the fridge staring at 40 eggs and wondering what to do! The I Breathe I'm Hungry meal plan is good but I avoid artificial sweeteners so not all the recipes are suitable for me. If anyone has any additional menu ideas then please add them to the following list.

Egg salad (mashed with mayo)
Fried eggs
Poached eggs
Scrambled eggs
Omelette (with cheese if desired)
Egg and cream cheese crepes
Egg in a cup (mashed with butter)
Devilled eggs

Cold hard boiled eggs
Cheese (in small amounts)

Bulletproof coffee to make up the fat requirement

SchroSawMargeryDaw Sun 20-Jul-14 11:13:22

Those crepes are gorgeous, I ads a load of salt to mines though, and some black pepper. I love how they taste. smile

Thanks for putting up a meal list. Will try and think of some more eggy recipes, think I am going to use up my sugar free haribo and coconut milk yogurt today. Get rid of temptation! smile

StuntNun Sun 20-Jul-14 11:19:58

Schro I'm eating as much fruit and veg as I can today in the hope that I won't feel deprived next week.

SchroSawMargeryDaw Sun 20-Jul-14 11:57:58

I have strawberries in the fridge but I don't want to go too far. I just keep thinking, it's only a week for the hard bit. May have a lovely chocolatey Atkins bar though.

I will be watching all your results with interest.

I decided I needed to take immediate action on Wednesday when my blood glucose had reached almost diabetic levels. Given that I'd got it down to normal I was getting a bit peevish about it! I started the Harcombe Phase 1 which seems to be like Uber but with NLY! I'm on my 5th day and my BG has plummeted over the last few days and is well back to normal. Unfortunately the promised weight loss is still elusive. sad

Tomorrow is the start of Uber so the yoghurt will be going but if that doesn't shift some pounds I'll be going egg-bound with you all! grin At least I'd get a bit of cheese again! Boy, do I miss cheese!

StuntNun Sun 20-Jul-14 16:24:16

These egg muffins look good, especially for people that need to take food into work with them.
