To think back on this year's best "WTF" threads

rainbowmash · 18/12/2021 17:45

I've been inspired by a recent post on AIBU about a DP handing vegetables, bamboo, and mis-matched hard drives full of films as gifts to OP and family (OP, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this as an example! I also hope you get some better gifts this year!)

Among all the more serious stuff, there have been quite a few threads this year which crossed the line into serious WTF territory. Some that spring to mind for me:

The lady whose new neighbour tried to enlist her into befriending his wife who had significant language barriers - and the resulting thread which got weirder by the day! If I remember, the OP was very calm and level headed about the whole thing!

The OP whose DP was in a cycling club which was being followed around by a mysterious self-appointed cheerleader who turned up to their events and who nobody could get rid of!

What have been your favourite threads from the MN twilight zone?

(I'm not a journo, btw, but if anyone feels like paying me for recycled MN posts, do go ahead!)

I was just coming on to say the current vegetable one!

Was snapped and farted this year or have I just lost time?

RuggerHug · 18/12/2021 17:52

The one where the OP wanted to sue Wuhan for compensation was hilarious in a dark humour way.

Feck knows about the rest, I've lost all concept of time[laugh]

Vapeyvapevape · 18/12/2021 17:53

Changing Christmas to the summer was equally Confused

Echobelly · 18/12/2021 17:54

Not sure if this year or last, but the one about receiving a mysterious typed Bible passage about marriage in the post addressed to DH and wondering if it was a cryptic message from an Other Woman but it turned out to be an eye test from DH's work sent with no context or explanation whatsoever, I think.

That was very odd.

DuchessSilver · 18/12/2021 17:54

The one whose husband cooked the masseuse a steak!

TulipCat · 18/12/2021 17:57

The one where the OP was complaining about naked men with hairy bums in the changing room. That would be the men's changing room she had taken her toddler son into!

Teacupsandtoast · 18/12/2021 18:03

The one with the OP who received a letter from the police about her husband apparently doing something illicit....does anyone know what happened in the end?

Jasmine11 · 18/12/2021 18:09

The recent thread where the OP wanted to ban everyone from outside her immediate family from giving her 4 year old any Christmas presents as she already had 9 presents to open - even the child's godfather or nanny were expected to 'butt out'. It then transpired that said four year old was a toy throwing tantrumer who didn't like any of the OP's advent gifts (probably just wanted a chocolate one like all her friends). Clearly a reaction to the OP's controlling nature!

The autumn duvet cover one was Twilight zone for me. Just because I can't imagine a life so mundane you spend your days trawling for seasonal bedding and your evenings lamenting the lack of gifting equality in your friendship.

@DuchessSilver

The one whose husband cooked the masseuse a steak!
Oh yes, didn't he then 'charge' OP - a vegetarian - for it??

@DuchessSilver

The one whose husband cooked the masseuse a steak!
Yeah that one was really strange!
fuckoffjournalists · 18/12/2021 18:16

Link to the give giving of randomness veg and hard-drives as presents please!

The one where the blokes wifes therapist was dodgy as fuck. She was alleging satanic cult sex abuse and he was adamant there was no time period where it could have happened.

It was like something out of Reddit unresolved mysteries and I hope he got to the bottom of it.

Oh lordy lor! I'd forgotten snapped and farted! Surely that's got to be at least three years ago??
lastqueenofscotland · 18/12/2021 18:18

Snapped and farted is definitely a few years old.
I remember the autumn bedding one! I remember eyerolling pretty hard at that

Many of the Covid threads

Neighbours climbing the fence to use the garden furniture

Kayak parking thread

PizzaCrust · 18/12/2021 18:20

The one where OP wanted to give her child a joint Christmas and birthday present but also dictate what the child got and wouldn’t let them spend their money on what they liked. And used their birthday as an excuse to do what they wanted over December and essentially spend her birthday and Christmas money on activities OP wanted to do.

Was that the one where it turned out OP was being targeted by someone who was suffering with a mental health crisis and who had some problematic beliefs about OP's partner? I wish I hadn't lost track of that one ...

That was very sad - I think it was an old thread that the OP suddenly returned to this year - still on the same situation with very little positive progress. Sounded awful. I hope they both managed to access the support they needed.

And the equally hilarious response thread that popped up where a man claimed to be watched while in the showers by an angry woman 😂
ChuckGarabedian · 18/12/2021 18:38

What’s this autumn duvet cover one? I’m intrigued.

powershowerforanhour · 18/12/2021 18:42

Oh I want to know about the ones I remember! What happened in the end with the Mumsnetter who didn't want to be the language barrier lady's BFF, and the cycling club cheerleader one, and the neighbours climbing fence to use the garden furniture -IIRC they were a bit scary so the OP didn't want to just tell them to fuck off. It was so weird, the mental image of this well 'ard dodgy family sitting on OP's cane chairs offering each other fruit punch or whatever they were doing like it was just normal behaviour.
