To think back on this year's best "WTF" threads

346 replies

rainbowmash · 18/12/2021 17:45

I've been inspired by a recent post on AIBU about a DP handing vegetables, bamboo, and mis-matched hard drives full of films as gifts to OP and family (OP, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this as an example! I also hope you get some better gifts this year!)

Among all the more serious stuff, there have been quite a few threads this year which crossed the line into serious WTF territory. Some that spring to mind for me:

The lady whose new neighbour tried to enlist her into befriending his wife who had significant language barriers - and the resulting thread which got weirder by the day! If I remember, the OP was very calm and level headed about the whole thing!

The OP whose DP was in a cycling club which was being followed around by a mysterious self-appointed cheerleader who turned up to their events and who nobody could get rid of!

What have been your favourite threads from the MN twilight zone?

(I'm not a journo, btw, but if anyone feels like paying me for recycled MN posts, do go ahead!)

There was one from 2019 ish that I’ve always wondered about. The OP was part of a group of friends whom she referred to as Friend A B C D E. One of the group made up a complete lie about OP having an affair with her DH. It was completely untrue and I think the DH even backed her up. But the whole group turned on the OP despite them knowing the truth and she ended up excluded from the group. Might not sound like the most WTF thread but it went on for quite a while and everyone really rallied around the OP. Anyone remember this and know how it all ended?

ToffeePennie · 21/12/2021 22:05

Deffo the weird parking thread bloke who doesn’t have the balls to come back himself. I still want to join with the OPs brothers fan club!

Did he pick up the car?

@FaoinDrualus

The woman on a bus who complained that a man told her that her bags were too big and taking up the fly space. So she screamed at him and he moved to the flight seat. He was the one being unreasonable, and we never did figure out what either the fly space or the flight space were on the bus. Lots of people asked and the OP said they had obviously never been on a bus.
I am guessing the flight seat is a single seat right behind the driver, sort of under the stairs too. Often seen on London busses.
mygenericusername · 21/12/2021 22:16

I always wonder what happened to rainy puddles on alphabet street. Was that this year or last?? The years are all merging into one. Is rainy still around.

There was also the poster that kept writing threads about the cost of importing glass from Italy after brexit.

It’s been a weird, weird year. I think I’m getting too old for this shit Gin

Ddot · 21/12/2021 22:39

Wheelie bin house, op just bought her house and then realised all the neighbour's used her drive as bin storage

Vapeyvapevape · 21/12/2021 22:52

@neverornow I think that person was a troll.

stayathomer · 21/12/2021 22:59

Anyone know what happened to the lady who moved to New Zealand with DH and kids from London and really hated it. I often think of her distress. WitchesandWizards might have been her name
I thought of her too. Such a huge move to regretSad
My not very interesting standout was an op saying their mil turned up at their holiday to surprise them. It was more the responses, you'd honestly have thought she'd murdered someone. Responses were she was controlling, had mh issues and OP should cut her out. I got waaaayyyy too investedBlush

vdbfamily · 21/12/2021 23:18

Does anyone remember years ago there was an OP who had caught sight of some paperwork of her husband or partner who she had been with for years and it had a different date of birth that would have made him about 15 years older than her had told her. She was going to try and get his birth certificate from the Caribbean Island he was from. I was totally booked and then list the thread completely and never refound it. I think about it quite a lot.

neverornow · 21/12/2021 23:26

@Vapeyvapevape no way! Really? I never got troll vibes from the tread. Wow. I guess I no longer feel bad for her then lol!

Vapeyvapevape · 21/12/2021 23:35

@neverornow oh hang on I think I’ve got the wrong thread- I was thinking about the poster who kept getting puddles on her patio caused by her neighbour . Is that the one ?

Ilovechinese · 22/12/2021 02:09

The one where someone said her husband flushed his t-shirt down the toilet 😂🤣😂

brushandmop · 22/12/2021 03:19

I might be dreaming this but I was browsing classics and I cant find a thread I am sure existed. It was a woman who thought she had found a cat but it was a toy cat, but she had taken it to the vet?! I feel like its too weird to make up. I might be missing some vital details but thats all i can remember.

Back on topic - favourite WTF thread this year is the satanic woods and a shoutout to the cameo of the year - Quern. Gone but not forgotten. Why anyone reported a thread which had clearly had taken on a new life is weird and sad.

Kanaloa · 22/12/2021 04:57

@LarryandLeon

I liked the one where the OP was annoyed that her partner had given some bolognese mince to her 2 grandkids. She was saying it was far too much food for them & it turned in to a version of the mumsnet chicken with people competing over how long 500g mince lasts for them. There was also a funny one asking how many sausages to cook.
I remember that! She was livid and was acting like they’d pulled some tiger who came to tea stunt when in fact they’d had a bowl of pasta.

Just looked at this - what a sad situation.

Lots of threads get taken down by mumsnet ‘on a hunch’ rather than because they have any solid evidence it’s not genuine.
@neverornow oh hang on I think I’ve got the wrong thread- I was thinking about the poster who kept getting puddles on her patio caused by her neighbour . Is that the one ?
Both posts, the puddles and alphabet street were written by the same poster who was then banned and posts removed.

TheRigatonini · 22/12/2021 11:25

@DarlingDarwin

That one where someone saw someone who looked vaguely possibly masculine in a gym changing room and wanted to know if she should have gone postal in case she/he was trans and might have attacked her. Despite the other person not coming anywhere near her or in anyway engaging with her.
Wouldn’t it have been in case he wasn't trans?
JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 22/12/2021 18:48

@stalkersaga

It wasn't this year but fuck it: my all time favourite is still the "I've had twins and need a bigger cat" thread.
That was mine!! Total typo!
Changechangychange · 22/12/2021 21:35

Wouldn’t it have been in case he wasn't trans?

From memory, I think there was every possibility it was just a slightly square-jawed cis woman.

Changechangychange · 22/12/2021 21:39

@brushandmop that would be the woman who carefully nursed a cushion tassel back to health, thinking it was a baby hedgehog (bad reaction to a new medication, she realised when she woke up the following morning).

Somebody linked upthread, it was pretty funny (OP was laughing at herself),

PineappleWilson · 23/12/2021 10:21

@OneRuleForThem this is the horse thread, woman kept turning up with her kids once they knew the horses were there: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4341440-I-have-a-CF

That’s not the one I remember! (I think “my” thread was older than 2021). I’m sure in the one I’m thinking of the OP turned up to find a child actually riding the horse while the mother was watching from the sidelines encouraging her!

Alleycat1 · 23/12/2021 16:08

The Birdie thread. Op's young son had a brooch that gave him messages from beyond including one that said we were all going to die.....soon. Funnily enough we have heard nothing from Op since the onset of Covid. ConfusedHmm
