To think back on this year's best "WTF" threads

rainbowmash · 18/12/2021 17:45

I've been inspired by a recent post on AIBU about a DP handing vegetables, bamboo, and mis-matched hard drives full of films as gifts to OP and family (OP, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this as an example! I also hope you get some better gifts this year!)

Among all the more serious stuff, there have been quite a few threads this year which crossed the line into serious WTF territory. Some that spring to mind for me:

The lady whose new neighbour tried to enlist her into befriending his wife who had significant language barriers - and the resulting thread which got weirder by the day! If I remember, the OP was very calm and level headed about the whole thing!

The OP whose DP was in a cycling club which was being followed around by a mysterious self-appointed cheerleader who turned up to their events and who nobody could get rid of!

What have been your favourite threads from the MN twilight zone?

(I'm not a journo, btw, but if anyone feels like paying me for recycled MN posts, do go ahead!)

OP posts:

There was another Horse Thread where the OP turned up to find a random dumped horse in her field with her own horses and werdly the legal position is the unwitting recipent has to provide care while the owner is found .

Turned out this chap had been dumped (as in proper dumped not stolen and dumped with frantic owners looking for him)

Op had a new horse ...........but sadly he became ill a while later and had to be euthanised . (Maybe a longterm health condition which was why he was dumped ? )

Sad thread but hats off to the OP for taking him on.

@Alleycat1

The Birdie thread. Op's young son had a brooch that gave him messages from beyond including one that said we were all going to die.....soon. Funnily enough we have heard nothing from Op since the onset of Covid. ConfusedHmm
Thank Christ. The number of posters who were still saying ‘OMG I’m freaking ouuuuttt!!!’ despite many others pointing out the endless plotholes, or even complaining we were running their enjoyment of it by noticing the flaws, was puke-inducing.

There's one right now asking if Boris would be as popular if he wasn't blonde. That's pretty bonkers.

I’d forgotten this one! Absolutely barmy:

Sadly taken down!

For this year, the poster who is obsessed with the Beatles and specifically John's love for Paul, she really needs to let it go.

WomanStanleyWoman · 26/12/2021 23:58

Is this the superannuated Larry Stylison ‘shipper’?

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 27/12/2021 00:53

The OP whose neighbour drilled holes in her house to hang a tarpaulin over her windows. I never did really understand why she didn't just take it down, but so far as I know we were left in limbo with the OP waiting to hear from the planning department.

What? Am I on the same mumsnet as everyone else, how am I missing all these crazy threads?

Kanaloa · 27/12/2021 03:19

Although I do like the Beatles!

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 27/12/2021 07:30

Of the ones that weren't bollocks, I think my favourite, peak mumsnet thread this year was the one where someone innocently posted in S&B about getting dressed up to go to The Ivy in her town for a special occasion. Cue several mumsnetters telling her that the Ivy wasn't special, they took their kids for a quick lunch, she didn't need to get dressed up, it's a chain restaurant equivalent to maccies etc etc.
OP never came back to the thread but I hope she had a lovely time.

bonfireheart · 27/12/2021 12:00

@cheesychipsonwembleyway yes!! Her daughter was treating her to a nice dinner and everyone ripped into her. The "jeans and white trainers" brigade were out in full force on that one.

WomanStanleyWoman · 27/12/2021 12:23

I can’t find the thread, but I’m wondering if that was people confusing the original Ivy restaurant with the cafés and brasseries - which, while obviously owned by the same company, are indeed less formal. Whether the confusion was on the OP’s side or amongst the other posters, I don’t know, but either way, it’s a bit pathetic of people to dismiss something she was planning as a treat for her children.

bonfireheart · 27/12/2021 13:05

Tbf most of the S&B threads are funny.

"I'm getting married'
"Wear jeans and white trainers"

"I'm going to the Oscars"
"Wear jeans and white trainers"

@brushandmop

I might be dreaming this but I was browsing classics and I cant find a thread I am sure existed. It was a woman who thought she had found a cat but it was a toy cat, but she had taken it to the vet?! I feel like its too weird to make up. I might be missing some vital details but thats all i can remember.

Back on topic - favourite WTF thread this year is the satanic woods and a shoutout to the cameo of the year - Quern. Gone but not forgotten. Why anyone reported a thread which had clearly had taken on a new life is weird and sad.

@brushandmop that was a thread from a few years ago but if I recall the OP saw what she thought was a cat either in a wall or maybe stuck in a tree. She had noticed it there for a few days and was worried about it. She decided she’d investigate further when she got home from work after posting on MN and being encouraged to make sure kitty was ok. She came back on to say it had been a toy all along. I’m not selling it very well but I remember it being very funny at the time!
brushandmop · 27/12/2021 19:57

@DropYourSword yes that sounds more like the one! I wish I could find it, I remember it being very funny too

I think this might be it!

DancinOnTheCeiling · 27/12/2021 23:08

Omg thanks so much for posting the ‘snapped and farted’ thread, I just read some of it and am howling with laughter 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

brushandmop · 29/12/2021 01:35

@DropYourSword yes that's it! so funny. Thank you for the memories!

Ohhohohono · 30/12/2021 15:09

The one where the poster found out her dh was using behind her back and said she was leaving him (kids involved) and then staying with him but pretended on mn she'd left him ha and saying she's left him but still calls him dh. Pull the other one! Crazy!

doadeer · 06/01/2022 14:53

@DuchessSilver

The one whose husband cooked the masseuse a steak!
