Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

OMG. You have to do it OP. I couldn't bear the thought of not knowing if it was in my house!

Bitchywaitress · 01/08/2017 17:54

Shamelessly placemarking. If only you could get it done cheaper. Any locksmiths on mumsnet?

viques · 01/08/2017 17:55

Oh no! not again................ Grabs passport, leaves for Maui.

user1471548375 · 01/08/2017 17:55

And yes please diagram. Ooh. I wonder what's in there. A treasure map? A collection of 'adult toys'? Instructions for an everlasting energy supply?

Islacornx · 01/08/2017 17:56

YOU HAVE TO OPEN IT Shock

astoundedgoat · 01/08/2017 17:57

Well, obv. you have to open it! Equally obviously, it will contain nothing but an EPNS spoon from 1913 and a newspaper from 1928, but it MIGHT contain Shergar etc.

Rainybo · 01/08/2017 17:57

I'm going to placemark because I also have a locked safe in my house and if you find out how to crack it for less than 500, I can open mine!

They are probably both empty!

zwellers · 01/08/2017 17:57

Please don't let this be like the Victoria safe thread!. Open the safe, don't know how you have lived there all these years not knowing. Was nothing said when you moved in by the estate agents or vendors?

Mustbeoriginal38 · 01/08/2017 17:58

Yup! It needs to be opened! Smile

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 01/08/2017 17:59

www.google.co.uk/amp/m.wikihow.com/Crack-a-Safe%3famp=1

Only if you've got some spare time though!

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 01/08/2017 17:59

Do you need a locksmith? Could you not just use a sledgehammer or some sort of drill? (Knows nothing about safe cracking).

It's up to you OP. If its empty then YWBU...however if it has a lost Rembrant or Tiffany Jewelery in it...

GladAllOver · 01/08/2017 18:00

Search for the lock's name on YouTube. There are videos on opening safes - some are remarkably easy.

Ghjklf · 01/08/2017 18:00

Photos AND a diagram please 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

DangerousMouse · 01/08/2017 18:01

you have to get that safe open!

DangerousMouse · 01/08/2017 18:01

Shergar could be in there?!

emma6776 · 01/08/2017 18:03

Please open the safe - how have you gone 15 years without doing it????Shock

8misskitty8 · 01/08/2017 18:12

Not the Victorian safe all over again please. 😩

How on earth have you gone 15 years without investigating that cupboard ?

safariboot · 01/08/2017 18:25

If it's a combination lock, google any maker's name to find out the default combination. Pretty good chance the original owners never bothered to change it.

2017SoFarSoGood · 01/08/2017 18:44

Diagram(ish) creature attached. First bit is looking into the large closet, second a head on view of sneaky closet. l shall ask DH to take photos so that you can see the actual trickery of it all. Turns out DH did know about it for some time but didn't think to mention Hmm

Yes to the googling! Not sure why I failed to think of that, especially when it was so effective in showing how to remove the broken hand held shower holder thingy.

thekillers · 01/08/2017 18:47

Sounds like a gun safe. What shape is it?

thegoodnameshadgone · 01/08/2017 18:50

Shamelessly placemarking this is sooo exciting.

2017SoFarSoGood · 01/08/2017 18:51

We assume it takes up all the space from floor to fake floor, so about 3 feet high, 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep?

OP posts:
Lostbeyondwords · 01/08/2017 18:56

OPEN IT!!

OstentatiousWanking · 01/08/2017 18:56

I'm sorry I simply can not cope with this senario again.
Good luck OP.
