Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

Open! Open! Open!

GetOutOfMYGarden · 01/08/2017 19:26

Gonna go against the grain, I've been on /r/whatsinthisthing and seen too many disappointments where the safe is empty!

BlahBlahSaidSquish · 01/08/2017 19:27

You must open it! Like you really needed to ask!

MissCommunication · 01/08/2017 19:29

Ooh how intriguing. Why would you leave it for someone else to open??? It's yours, all yours!!

ILiveUnderYourBed · 01/08/2017 19:30

Oooh yes! Open it! And then move house quickly incase you've unleashed some kind of curse....

laura1206 · 01/08/2017 19:38

Omg open her up!

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/08/2017 19:48

We also have an unopened secret safe. I think I might open it one day but I'm oddly uncurious about it.

The idea of selling the place not ever having opened it is where I draw the line. It will be opened before sale.

TheFlandersPigeonMurderer · 01/08/2017 19:50

Sorry to cast a shadow over proceedings but, given the rough measurements that the OP has given, it's more than likely a gun safe and so will be empty Sad
though DH squirrels valuables away in ours when we go away so you never know

CigarsofthePharoahs · 01/08/2017 19:53

Surely an angle grinder is what you need!

Surely there's a mumsnetter who is a locksmith and could go and crack it?

Dynamite?

Sairelou · 01/08/2017 19:57

Oh FFS just OPEN THE GODDAMN THING!

OMFG Please open the safe and report back immediately!!! Grin

fourquenelles · 01/08/2017 20:01

No. I can't take it. I am going to hide this thread in case it turns into a copy of the New Zealand one not really. I want to know what's in it

2017SoFarSoGood · 01/08/2017 20:03

Sorry to dripfeed, but I am in the good old USofA so a gun safe is even more likley here, I suspect. I'm a bit gun phobic so hope it is empty, if that is indeed the case.

DH is treading on thin ice; I requested pictures and make and model over an hour ago and no reply. He is very aware of my lack of patience. This may end badly.

I can't go through this again.

chocolatepudandchocolatesauce · 01/08/2017 20:07

How did you wait 15 years?!?!?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/08/2017 20:13

Ten years and counting here. It's easy when you think it's probably empty.

Ours is jewellery and valuables sized. It would be nice to find a few diamonds or a gold bar :)

BarbaraofSeville · 01/08/2017 20:19

My money's on it being empty, having being a gun safe for the previous occupants, who have taken everything with them, hopefully.

Locked safes are a bit of a touchy subject around here OP, you may regret posting and get talked into opening the safe, even if you didn't intend to. I suggest you start a crowd funding campaign, so all the posters telling you to open the safe can put their money where their posting fingers are.

Or of course, you know exactly what response a locked safe gets round here and are trying to go for a full thread?

Ciaovenora · 01/08/2017 20:20

If the previous owners are like my estranged Father's safe which I never knew about Id open it. My Father was a complete miser he hid so many valuables throughout the house he insisted they'd being stolen. When, in fact, some was in the safe the rest hidden under floor boards...all this came to light when the house went up for sale.

Ciaovenora · 01/08/2017 20:20

*His was a floor safe in the living room.

Sparkletastic · 01/08/2017 20:25

Oh god not sure I can survive this again.

SparklyMagpie · 01/08/2017 20:26

I don't think i can cope!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/08/2017 20:30

Please let this one a) get opened and b) have something awesome inside!

2017SoFarSoGood · 01/08/2017 20:36

BarbaraofSeville you are scaring me. I tried looking up past threads on locked safes, but can't find any edifying material. Is this actually a thing - are there lots of past threads with this dilemma? Have I unwittingly poked the hornet's nest? Please share.

I am likely to start my second MN thread in relationships if my actualdamnedbastardDH does not send me pictures soon. I will not be home from work for another 7 hours and I can feel the rage bubbling up already. I know it is ridiculous, but now I've decided to open it I CANNOT WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE. I cannot leave early today however, so needs must.
