Come all ye Safe Crackers - AIBU to move without opening it?

Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

Oooh how exciting! I would love to find something like this in my house!

torthecatlady · 01/08/2017 23:40

If I found a safe in my house I would absolutely have to open it! Even if nothing was in there, I would just have to know! Very exciting!

Teddy1970 · 01/08/2017 23:41

What was the Victorian safe thread? I'm intrigued!

KindleBueno · 01/08/2017 23:44

Send your dh threats! No pics = no nookie!

PinkPuffin · 01/08/2017 23:46

Placemarking

ophiotaurus · 01/08/2017 23:46

This better not end up like the Victorian one!

kissmethere · 01/08/2017 23:54

Sorry I'm not investing in this even though I'm intrigued. I'm sure many people will. I do remember the Victorian safe thread and that was a total string along. I give this to page 5 to come up with an outcome otherwise I call fake.

Placemarking!

(Happy sigh) OP keep the endearments coming, I'm saving them all for potential future use since my DP is currently on holiday for 4 weeks without me Grin (I should prob add it was booked for months before we got together lol)

NotlazyafteralllovelysweetsexyDH came up with a completely visible all the time model number (at least that's what we think it is) so we can call the safe cracking shops tomorrow. Will be home too late tonight, but frankly I need to get my own big specs on and check this baby out myself before any more calls are made. I also suspect I can put the cost of cracking it as "preparing for sale costs" and get a capital gains deduction, at least I shall pretend as much to myself.

And yes, the entire thing is masquerading as the carpeted floor of a raised or short closet. It is in DH's office, so not somewhere I ever hang out. In fact I don’t believe I have ever actually walked into before yesterday evening. He obviously has too much crap and too little curiosity.

Oh wait. I once peeked in there when I heard glass breaking. The light fixture fell off the ceiling and smashed into a thousand pieces. I was home alone, and two floors up so not sure why it fell.

ClemDanFango I do solemnly swear.

I'm a pretty good egg, on the whole. You may trust me to do my very best.

I am officially placemarking and invested in this thread. Don't let me down. We will be having a little chat if you do.

Goodnight. I will return to this thread tomorrow. Envy

Good luck OP, we've happened upon 3 unopened safes, loads of keys but no clue as to which is for what one, and a super complicated turning dial one. After some extortionate quotes for getting them opened we:
Crowbarred the first one up and used a jigsaw, and hammer to break into it... full of old coin collections, kept my birth year... but not worth the paper they were written on and half the coins are out of date now...

Chiseled one out of a wall (only a small one) and then broke into it with a sledgehammer, ignorance and brute force... full of commemorative coins....

The last one was a beast. Concreted into the floor. We spent an afternoon with an angle grinder and cut the lid out. Full of random coin books...

We now have one- empty and with keys, that's too big to move, on its side, in the way! It's a Chubb one though- fireproof and has a pretty retro logo!

My bet is on them not containing anything exciting!

GlitteryFluff · 02/08/2017 00:59

Ooh so intrigued by this.
Please don't disappear like Victorian safe!

Flowerbunty · 02/08/2017 01:08

Oooh I hope it's creepy dolls!

DeadMorose · 02/08/2017 01:23

Oh, shit. Not a safe thread again. If I won't find out what's in there, I wil probably sigh of disappointment and continue living my life cry and die. I nearly did last time with thread like that.

Anyway, this I shall sit down right here now, thank you very much.

Any luck op?

brasty · 02/08/2017 07:38

I suspect it is an old gun safe. So there won't be anything in it.
