Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

There was only one Victorian Safe thread, which some posters got rather overinvested in. However, this thread suggests that it was in chat, so is long gone:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2517457-Victorian-Safe-Thread

I don't think it was ever revealed on here if there was anything interesting in it, and some posters may have had trouble coping with the lack of closure. You may have triggered their PTSD over the matter (apologies for making light of PTSD).

If your DH doesn't come up with the pics in a timely manner, you will be told to LTB, put itching powder in his underpants, or hire a hitman.

Ugh ive seen this sort of thing before on reddit. You're on the edge of your seat for 7 days and either OP never reports back or it's opened and found to contain 12 dead spiders and a used condom

namechangedforthisreply · 01/08/2017 20:47

OP this is my new favourite thread. I'm so excited for your update.

Also love the diagram Star

peonyinparadise · 01/08/2017 20:50

Crack it!

PerpendicularVincent · 01/08/2017 20:53

Take an axe to it and report back

Engol · 01/08/2017 20:56

I'd have to open it but wouldn't want to spend £500 on it. However £500 would be worth it in order not to spend a life time wondering

Do you know anything about the houses history, how old it is, who were previous owners?

blamethecat · 01/08/2017 20:59

Fuck me have I fallen through worm hole ? I think any 'should I open the safe?' Threads need a klaxon/warning until the bloody thing is open. Grin

GreenTulips · 01/08/2017 21:00

Open it! Did they not leave keys? Who had the house before you?

RebootYourEngine · 01/08/2017 21:05

Waits in anticipation

Foxysoxy01 · 01/08/2017 21:06

How exciting! I just don't understand how you have resisted the urge to open it for this long.

I hope it's something really creepy for MN's gratification but obviously something really boring and not at all scary for you Grin

Funko · 01/08/2017 21:06

Stop the thread everyone.

Right, I've seen Antman. I can confirm that the best way of opening a safe is drilling a couple of holes in the door, then pouring in some liquid nitrogen, then putting a mattress in front of the safe quickly and leg it to safety...in a doorway The liquid nitrogen expands and boom 💥, the door pops right off

Funko · 01/08/2017 21:09

Video instructions Grin

Toast3 · 01/08/2017 21:12

We once had a faulty safe in a holiday villa. All our stuff, including valuables and passports where in it. The owner sent a handy man round with a dirty great big drill and a sledgehammer... it took him about 3 hours but he got into it in the end....
You have to open it. How have you lived
without knowing what's inside, for so long?!

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 01/08/2017 21:12

Sweetie, you sound very sincere in your desire to unearth the secrets of the safe. Please don't make me hunt you down on the Apocalptic pony and smack you round the face with a wet haddock should you disappear...Smile

Oysterbabe · 01/08/2017 21:14

I bet there's a creepy doll inside.

notreallythere · 01/08/2017 21:21

I bet inside the safe there is a series of smaller safes.

babybubblescomingsoon · 01/08/2017 21:23

I'm so blatantly place marking I'm not even going to pretend of offer advice. OPEN IT!!!

2017SoFarSoGood · 01/08/2017 21:24

Oh a wet haddock threat. This %&#@ is getting real. You know I now want haddock and chips, Apocalyptichhorsewoman? That was uncalled for Grin

Well, no impending divorce required. LovelysweetkindobedientDH actually went to the nearest locksmith, but it was closed. He called the number but no result. He did take pictures, but they are useless. He claims to have googled, but if he does not realize the frickin serial numbers are right there on the label then all is lost. I shall need to wait until I get home and do the job myself. The reading job that is. Then the googling job. A woman's work is never done right enough!

My neighbours have a pond in their garden, and they found an old rusty and very large safe in the bottom of it--it was about three feet tall, and two feet wide.

There was nothing in it, though, because the back had been cut out of it, probably with an angle grinder. Apparently there's so much attention paid to making the door difficult to get into without a key that it's usually easier to cut into a safe through the back.

If you can get it out of the closet that might be the easiest way to get into it.

WineAndTiramisu · 01/08/2017 21:29

Definitely get it open, I can't cope with another safe thread without a resolution!

Fairybella · 01/08/2017 21:30

Ooo I hope
This turns out good

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 01/08/2017 21:32

Interesting indeed Grin

Rockspin · 01/08/2017 21:33

Oooh the anticipation! You must open in OP!

Jessiecat27 · 01/08/2017 21:35

Ooooh following!

Teddy1970 · 01/08/2017 21:37

Ooh come on OP....although you might only find a pair of false teeth grinning at you like I did!
