Come all ye Safe Crackers - AIBU to move without opening it?

Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

Funko · 09/08/2017 21:38

What if there is another smaller locked safe within the safe? and then some dolls

Whosthemummynow · 09/08/2017 21:39

We need a new thread!

Salmotrutta · 09/08/2017 21:39

Just placemarking impatiently

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/08/2017 21:39

Funko don't worry, I've also got both threads open and nearly posted about Kyle's ass on the wrong one!! Blush

dressinblack · 09/08/2017 21:39

I'm afraid that when this inevitably needs a new thread the new one will get lost in cyber space forever and I will never know Hmm

Funko · 09/08/2017 21:40

Mortified puzzledBlushBlushBlush

CremeFresh · 09/08/2017 21:40

If that's the case Funko , I foresee a drop in MN posters because a vast majority will be in therapy !

PigletJohn · 09/08/2017 21:42

I hope this isn't another teaser thread.

3 feet high is too short for an ordinary gunsafe (rifles and shotguns) and very large for pistols. It will be interesting to see your photos.

It is abnormally large for a domestic safe for valuables, cash and jewellery, but might contain your silver teapots or documents.

Rather than paying $500, you could buy or hire an anglegrinder, which will make short work of it. You will want to estimate its age first as some old fire-resisting ones might contain asbestos. A useful tip is that the door and its frame are the thickest part, the back, sides, top and bottom are thinner.

Mortified puzzled

Don't be so hard on yourself; if I had a quid for the number of things like that I've done ... Wink

CremeFresh · 09/08/2017 21:43

New thread here

CremeFresh · 09/08/2017 21:44

PigletJohn get your arse over there and give Kyle a hand !

ChrisPrattsFace · 09/08/2017 21:44

Come on 2017.. we need blow by blow account of whats happening!!!

scotchpie · 09/08/2017 21:46

I'll be flying over myself if Kyle doesn't get his arse into gear, I know zero about safe cracking but after a shitty day I'm sure I'll crack it!

mumdebump · 09/08/2017 21:46

Cremefresh the OP needs to start the new thread. We need the OP's posts to be highlighted in green. Yours will probably get deleted as a TAAT.

PelorusJack · 09/08/2017 21:46

'''Tis true PigletJohn would have had it open by now. 😂

Wheelycote · 09/08/2017 21:47

PigletJohn you are officially the guru of all that it is DIY!🌟

CremeFresh · 09/08/2017 21:49

It won't get deleted as its a continuation.

2017SoFarSoGood · 09/08/2017 21:49

Piglet where the hell have you been when you were needed?

Actually the pictures far up thread show it is not a gun safe. Not the type a grinder recommended for.

He says he is getting there. Almost there he said. Please I said.

He is very sweaty. DH has opened the deck door to cool Kyle as he works. Did not remove shirt yet.

OP should have posted in Home & Garden boards. Pigletjohn would have sorted it out without having to wait a week.

TheMogget · 09/08/2017 21:50

We need you to set up a new thread sofar

RTKangaMummy · 09/08/2017 21:50

Please could OP start new thread so shows up in colour?

FrankieStein · 09/08/2017 21:50

Im actually scared. Only 30 29 new slots on this thread! What if they fill up before Kyle gets it open Shock

BitOutOfPractice · 09/08/2017 21:51

A useful tip is that the door and its frame are the thickest part, the back, sides, top and bottom are thinner.

Yes. But the back sides and bottom are encased in what looks like feet-thick concrete

2017SoFarSoGood · 09/08/2017 21:51

Am on my phone so no clue how to but shall elbow DH off of good computer momentarily. Stay there.
