Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

nigelsbigface · 01/08/2017 21:50

I LOVE a locked safe thread. Of course you must open it!

Arsenicinthesugarbowl · 01/08/2017 21:54

Good luck OP. On know you'll be working through the night to satisfy our curiosity Grin

ginjin · 01/08/2017 22:03

I'm not sure if American rules are the same, but gun cabinets over here must be attached to an external wall. Is yours? Also, the gun cabinet has to have two locks with different keys, and the keys kept in different places. So it may not be a gun cabinet?!

TheTombstonesMove · 01/08/2017 22:09

La LA la

RiversrunWoodville · 01/08/2017 22:16

Oh oh oh this is going to drive me crazy

Doesitgoto11 · 01/08/2017 22:20

Apologies but this is a blatant placemark if only to see what the next 'term of endearment' for OP's DH is Grin

fuckwitery · 01/08/2017 22:27

Open. The. Safe.

doingitallagaintoday · 01/08/2017 22:30

Can not wait to hear what is inside!!

2017SoFarSoGood · 01/08/2017 22:34

Doesitgoto11 I still have 5.28 hours before I am home and lazyunnosydoesnotgiveashitDH is 'taking a rest' and therefore cannot give me the serial numbers.

It does not bode well. The human head he predicts we will find may just be his.

might contain shergar 😄

Maybe Lord Lucan and Amelia Earhart too?

wowfudge · 01/08/2017 22:41

Bloody big safe in that case, unless it's their ashes. I am intrigued OP. I don't know how you couldn't notice it in all that time. We found a secret door in our attic. It leads to next door. We still can't find the header tank for the central heating though. I suspect that is next door.

AtHomeDadGlos · 01/08/2017 22:41

How have you not opened it already?

safariboot · 01/08/2017 22:45

wowfudge I get the impression it was placed (and carpet-covered) so it just looked like part of the building. Our house has a built-in cupboard with its floor a foot or two above the room floor; similar to OPs. (No safe for us though).

ArchieStar · 01/08/2017 22:50

PLACEMARKING!!!

This has got me too excited GrinGrinGrin

Queenofthedrivensnow · 01/08/2017 22:57

Place marking

BannedFromNarnia · 01/08/2017 22:59

Definitely seems like a gun safe but are they so that common in the US? I mean here they're mandatory for guns but I'm not sure the rules are the same there? Hoping for Shergar!

BigApple11 · 01/08/2017 23:08

Can you bunk off work and crack it open asap please!!!!!

BumWad · 01/08/2017 23:11

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/08/2017 23:12

Do not try this approach, it may have a negative impact on the value of your home

A quid each. That's all it would take to get that thing opened.

frankie001 · 01/08/2017 23:22

I'm so excited!!!!

Ginkypig · 01/08/2017 23:31

Omg not again!

if you don't open that safe after starting a thread about it like the last fucking person did and traumatised us all I will never ever forgive you!

Nonibaloni · 01/08/2017 23:36

I went to see a house that had a bloody massive safe in the pantry. It was an entirely unsuitable house but the safe had me considering it.

I also took a screwdriver and hammer to the various walls and floors in the house which weren't flush 10 mins after we moved in. I don't get people's lack of curiosity. Apparently the previous owners here got paid in mdf cause there was an abundance of false ceilings and corners. I was convinced there would be a safe behind one. There wasn't.
