To not understand all of this Corbyn hate

Disclaimer – I consider myself to be an intelligent and thoughtful person but also very uninformed and ignorant of political (and other) current affairs. Largely through my own choosing – I have virtually no faith in politicians and politics at all. I realised a very long time ago that the whole thing was an elaborate farce. I’ve always spoilt my ballot until Nick Clegg won me over and then proved, unequivocally, that I was right to not trust them. I vowed never to vote again but I’m feeling stirred to this time around and have therefore been looking into it more and trying to sift through the inevitable bullshit…

So – what is so bad about Corbyn? From what I understand (do remember my disclaimer and how uninformed I am!), the main people in the Labour party hate him because he is ‘unelectable’. So they’ve wanted him out for a long time but he has refused to go, on account of the fact he has been democratically chosen by the party members to be the leader. This annoys and frustrates them and they therefore blame him for creating an enormous and damaging rift in the party. But, surely, the fact that he has been elected as leader is testament to his popularity with Labour voters? And isn’t it a good thing that he stands his ground? Especially against the kind of people who would rather have someone like Ed Milliband (or his ilk – I don’t know any ‘current’ names) as party leader? Doesn’t it show that he is principled and ‘different’ from the political norm? Isn’t this something that we need?

And what does it matter if the Labour party are in shambles (a common reason I hear for not wanting to vote for them this time)? Surely that’s because of all of the ‘unelectable’ stuff above. But if he were to be elected, I’m guessing those problems would evaporate. Because he would have been elected. And anyway, aren’t political parties often shambolic? Wasn’t May’s drastic cabinet overhaul and sackings at the beginning of her reign (not to mention the Boris/Gove thing in the leadership contest) a clear sign of an ununited, shambolic party?

I realise Corbyn isn’t to everyone’s tastes politically but if you’re left leaning and want to try and get rid of the Tories, surely he’s not such a bad bet?

I’m sorry if this is making me come across as stupid but I genuinely want to know why some people (especially those who would normally consider themselves left-wing or Labour voters) dislike him so much.

Do you not have the same search function as everyone else?

ExplodedCloud · 25/04/2017 22:29

There's a loooong thread on this very topic. Let me see if I can find it.

ExplodedCloud · 25/04/2017 22:33

It's disappeared from my active convos now. It has the words Jeremy Corbyn and lovely in the title

Wishingitwaswarm · 25/04/2017 22:49

I wouldn't vote for him.
The way things are with Russia,. North Korea & Syria at the moment I want someone who can lead, not someone who's wants to sit and have a nice cup of tea with the leader of isis and have a chat about piece.

clevername · 25/04/2017 22:50

Cool, thank you. I'll have a look.

I like Corbyn far, far more than Blair and the like. He appears to understand ordinary people, those of us with low incomes, or who come from the north, or are state educated, or who don't have a polished persona. Too many outwardly charming but slippery politicians, from all sides, have used their showmanship, money and public school networks to accrue power.

From my point of view, Labour in its Old Labour days was once rather gritty, challenging, refreshing, salt-of-the-earth, rebellious, and anti-establishment. I liked that. But since New Labour, they are of a different type, as are some from other parties. Blair, Cameron, Clarke, Osborne, Clegg, Mandelson, Major, Brown. Blair and the rest stand for non-meritocratic elitism, selfishness, London-centricity, greedy corporate globalism and so on. No wonder for a long time people said "Politicians are all the same". Labour was once the party of "All animals are equal" but for New Labour types this is followed by "... but some are more equal than others".

Corbyn is someone who would stand up for union members, and listen to working-class northerners instead of turning his nose up at them and implying they were thick and lazy, had opinions which didn't count, and should know their place and be told what to do by someone who was better than them.

Having said that, I think Theresa May is a much better leader than Corbyn would be.

Salmotrutta · 25/04/2017 23:34

Umm, well lets see.

He was a close associate of certain members of the IRA before the peace talks?

He didn't address the anti-Semitism accusations levelled at him and has close ties with people who have anti-Israeli views?

His lack of leadership over Brexit?

Salmotrutta · 25/04/2017 23:36

Mind you - I don't hate him.

I just think he's not someone I want to see as PM.

Or Theresa May if it comes to that Hmm

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 25/04/2017 23:55

he is a nasty agitator always has been made a career of being a rebellious back bencher who achieved nothing and voted constantly against his own party

His PR has tried to rewrite his history claiming his links with terrorists are part of peace talks process - its bollocks he has never been

Lots of info out there and from the man himself in interviews

I'm sure the press will be informing people of this as we get closer to the election but of course his supporters will moan it's unfair reporting Hmm

Applebite · 25/04/2017 23:56

There's some beautiful photographs of the incompetent fucktit posing with the IRA that you can see if you like!

CheeseQueen · 26/04/2017 00:03

WTAF.
Why can't people just ask questions in the hope others will answer? It's all very well googling. A few thrown up google essays isn't the same as actual opinions though!
I'm what you'd probably call a floating voter. No idea who I'm going to vote for yet.
Can't bring myself to vote Labour as they are so crap at the mo, and what even ARE their policies anyway?!
I find these types of posts informative and good on the OP for starting it and creating a debate for different viewpoints.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/04/2017 00:03

And don't forget how he refused to share a platform with Cameron during the referendum campaign due to differences in political ideology

Yet happily shared platforms with those that support terrorism Hmm

What a fucking idiot

Holowiwi · 26/04/2017 00:12

He is an idiot and labour is going to pay the price.

Mindgone · 26/04/2017 00:58

But will only Labour save the NHS?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/04/2017 01:38

And don't forget how he refused to share a platform with Cameron during the referendum campaign due to differences in political ideology

Yes, and no doubt if he is still around if and when Sturgeon gets a 2nd indy referendum he will refuse to be part of a Better Together campaign.

Valentine2 · 26/04/2017 01:55

I clicked on this thread hoping someone would actually discuss the menifesto by Corbyn. But nope. It's the same "unelectable" and terrorists and Russia blah blah.
For once, what the actual fuck is wrong with his POLICIES people? Confused
It's a genuine question by the way.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/04/2017 02:31

he wants to raise business tax - now with Brexit Hmm

Raise tax for higher earners - again with Brexit looming not sensible with other countries tempting talent away

Nearly a 25% increase on minimum wage - is he going to cover that for small business

Increase NHS and education spending without raising basic income tax

And renationalise the railways (what amout money for improvements)

This is all costing billions of pounds while only increasing income tax for a few that won't bring in much

The polices need substance not just to sound good and please his adoring supporters when he announces them at a rally his economic advisers left becuase he didn't want to listen to their advice on economic planning

OfaFrenchmind2 · 26/04/2017 03:05

If you are fine with a misogynist antisemit and extremist supporting Leader, prone to hypocrisy and tantrums, then you should be ok with him, and Trump should not look too bad to you either (granted it's the other end of the spectrum regarding the extremism. Other than that, same same)

Noofly · 26/04/2017 07:07

But but but enthusiasm have you not seen Momentum's FB page? Renationalising the railways is free! Free, I tell you! Hmm

He's in the park this morning, planting magic money trees, to fund his harebrained ideas.

The sooner the party go out with the begging bowl to a credible potential leader, like David Miliband, the better

PeteAndManu · 26/04/2017 07:45

Fab listEnthusiasm. Can I add providing free school meals for all Primary children to raise attainment? The authors of the report it is based on say it won't do this, in some areas it would help but not in the majority of schools. I work in a school and would love the extra funds but I could think of so many better ways to spend it. Additional support for children that desperately need it but we cannot fund, resources, improved IT. for the majority of children in my local area this is just a nice perk. In some areas this plus breakfast clubs etc would be much needed. How about letting schools decide?

Applebite · 26/04/2017 08:06

Pete - my DM and grandparents were teachers, DB is a head teacher and numerous friends and cousins teach. So I can tell you - and it won't surprise you! - that teachers have been complaining about not letting the schools decide since at least the 1950's...

Why can't any government LISTEN to the actual schools and head teachers?!

o levels are great and they've been around for years, no let's make them GCSEs, let's make the GCSEs progressively easier, fuck that, let's make them harder again so it's all random to an employer as to what the marks actually mean, let's get rid of grammar school, let's bring back all the grammar schools, let's have some subjects modular where pupils can retake bits and some not (still bitter about that one, I'd have had straight A's if I could have done sodding modular Latin!), no wait it's all modular...

how many of the goons making these decisions have been in a classroom since they left school?!

No one hates him - he's just not what people want in a leader. He doesn't have the skills or air of a leader.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/04/2017 08:36

It is all just lefty soundbites. The suggestion of 20% tax on private school fees for example.

If you are hard left no doubt that appeals- those bastards can afford it. But, how much would that actually raise given only a tiny proportion woud be paying it? And out of that number there would be a proportion who would no longer be able to afford fees so they are then back in the state system.

Its also the lack of understanding of how such a policy presents. These parents are still paying their taxes and Council tax so this is basically a punishmentfor spending money on something he disapproves of.

PollyPerky · 26/04/2017 08:43

He said he would rather sit and have a cup of tea and a friendly chat with ISIS than confront them in other ways.

He has plans to throw money at everything but hasn't costed it.

He has never had a proper job except in union type organisations so has no idea how commerce works.

He wants to tax the 'rich' in the vain hope it will pay for everything- it won't.

He has no clear policy on nuclear weapons. He flunked the question when asked and a spokesman had to step in some hours later to clarify.

His MPs are leaving the party in droves. He'd not be able to form a government with anyone experienced.

His ideas are those of outdated communism which has be shown time after time never to work across the world unless as a dictatorship.

Is that enough?
