AIBU to wonder why the UK gets 4 teams in the World Cup, whereas France only gets one.

Why don't we play as UK in the World Cup? Why do we get 4 teams when everyone else gets just the one? It would bring an end to anyone but England sentiment.

I am just trying to argue that England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are not countries. We are GB/UK and why should we have 4 teams when all the other countries get just the one?

But you haven' argued that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland aren't countries. You have just made an extremely offensive and ignorant statement that they aren't countries.

You have totally ignored the history, traditions, culture , and languages that make these countries in their own right.

Why do we go to the Olympics as Team GB and not England, Scotland, Wales, and NI?

Because the IOC only recognise one Olympic Committee for Great Britain and FIFA recognise the FAs of the individual constituent countries. Different competitions, different rules, set by the relevant organising committees, nothing more complicated than that. I would suspect that the fact that football began in Britain, and if I understand correctly, the English FA was the first in the world probably has some thing to do with it.

😂😂😂😂 I’m actually cringing with embarrassment for you right now……

No other sovereign state has multiple teams.

Oh, well, if we’re going by head of state can we claim to be co-hosting, as we share a head of state with Canada?

Scotland and Wales not proper countries…. Don’t walk into a Scottish pub and say that 😂😂

Exactly. She might just get her heid in her hauns 😂😂

TheKittenswithMittens · 12/06/2026 22:08

I will concede that Scotland might be a separate country, but Wales isn't.

Rugby do this, the British Lions.

Yes.

It would be the Three Nations if that were the case.

Neither is England then.

Neither is England then.

That’s a good point.

OP, are you suggesting that England isn’t a country?

Tinywhitebutterfly · 12/06/2026 22:09

You're going to be really shocked to find out that Olympians from Northern Ireland can decide whether to represent Ireland or Great Britian.

NI rugby players have to play for the all island Irish rugby team though.

As NI wasn't on OPs list of 'not real countries', she may think it is a real country, or more likely, didn't know it existed.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is not a country.

Why wouldn’t wales be a separate country if Scotland is??

Ibi · 12/06/2026 22:10

It’s not that deep. The UK enters the World Cup as separate entities because the sport is governed by individual Football Associations (FA, SFA, FAW, and IFA) rather than sovereign countries. Football was invented in Britain, because these four associations were established in the 19th century (before FIFA was formed), they were grandfathered into the organisation and are recognised as individual members.

Different rules for other world cups in sport. Different rules for athletics competitions, and have you heard of the World Series - might blow your mind!!

England is not a country, either. The country is UK.

Too good of you. This level of ignorance isn't even worth engaging with. I'm off to lower my blood pressure.

You couldn’t be more wrong. You might need to educate yourself a little.

Blimms · 12/06/2026 22:11

Walkyrie · 12/06/2026 22:12

Can you even imagine a UK rugby team? It would be absolute fucking carnage.

An English/Irish joint team would be an absolute armour plated killing machine but I don’t think any of us are ready for that conversation yet 😬
