AIBU to wonder why the UK gets 4 teams in the World Cup, whereas France only gets one.

Why don't we play as UK in the World Cup? Why do we get 4 teams when everyone else gets just the one? It would bring an end to anyone but England sentiment.

In terms of FIFA they exist as separate entities, each has their own Football Association, hence they are individually able to compete. It's only on Pointless where countries have to be members of the UN in their own right, (I need to stop watching)!

Piggywaspushed · 12/06/2026 22:31

And which 'country' did you represent at the Commonweaths? Gibraltar?

SabrinaThwaite · 12/06/2026 22:31

Scotland joined with England to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Wales was never a country, Edward I just conquered Wales.

Erm … no.

Henry VIII united England and Wales in 1535 / 42.

Scotland was late to the party - 1707.

I won the Egg and Spoon race when I was six. I still know that the UK is made up of separate countries though.

😂😂😂

Tryagain26 · 12/06/2026 22:32

Because France is one country England, Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland are separate counties. They form the UK but they are still separate countries

Blimms · 12/06/2026 22:33

You’re in good company, OP because I have a brownie badge for cycling.

Jacopo · 12/06/2026 22:33

Oh you’re a competitive cyclist. That explains a lot.

JustSawJohnny · 12/06/2026 22:33

WTAF?!!

This has got to be a wind up.

Normandy isn't a fucking country, FFS 🙄

TheKittenswithMittens · 12/06/2026 22:31

England.

This is not a proper country even.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is not a country.

It most certainly is, it's the longest name in the UN too, good pub quiz trivia.

More than 4. Jersey guernsey and Isle of Man compete separately at commonwealth games but as part of team GB/GBNI.

But to blow ops mind further the Channel Islands and a IOM are not part of Great Britain , only part of The British Isle(whixh is reflected on our passports). As Crown Dependancies they are covered by GB in foreign affairs. Manx athletes can therefore represent team GB in the Olympics due to this (Mark Cavendish). Football associations do not recognise the Isle of Man and players would have to qualify for a home nations team on parentage etc. The ICC however do recognise the Isle of Man.

DowntonCrabby · 12/06/2026 22:35

Troll, or just as thick as my Scottish mince?

TownClock · 12/06/2026 22:35

"Fuck you and your Egg and Spoon race" is the sort of insult that could really catch on.

"your mum" has had its day.

TheKittenswithMittens · 12/06/2026 22:31

England.

By your logic England is not a country.

PhaedraTwo · 12/06/2026 22:36

Craftycariad · 12/06/2026 22:21

You are being totally ridiculous

Wales, unlike Scotland and N. Ireland doesn't have its own legal system. Or I suppose you could say, England, unlike Scotland and Northern Ireland doesn't have its own legal system.

drammmalllammma · 12/06/2026 22:36

Do you feel the same about the 6 NATIONS rugby or doesn’t that count! Think you have had too much coffee or some nectar OP !!

NI isn’t part of GB, so how do you square that one?

I think I read years ago that when the Olympic people were allocating initials they gave UKR to Ukraine and so the UK was given GBR.

Walkyrie · 12/06/2026 22:01

Tbh I’m open to it. Why not? Imagine the talent and unity via sport. Let’s heal those old grudges and win all the trophies?

😂😂😂 sure that would happen

SpottyAlpaca · 12/06/2026 22:38

Britain invented football and is still universally recognised as the spiritual home & custodian of the game. We codified the laws. We had the first professional leagues. The first international match ever played was England vs Scotland, so we invented that, too. England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland have permanent seats on IFAB, the governing body of the laws of world football. We invented that, too.

As a consequence of our unique & special position in the history of the game, and because we wrote the rules, the four home nations retain their separate football associations & run their own national teams. The same applies to Rugby union & cricket because we invented & wrote the laws of both of those games, too.
