I've just resigned !!!!

I've just handed in my notice (4 weeks) on my part-time job ! Had to do it because it makes more sense for me to be SAHM than to go out to work, as once I have paid for my childcare I am left with 15% of my earnings to show for it ! We are not eligible to Children's Tax Credits as DP earns too much, and with the summer holidays coming up we'd have to pay £26 per day for our 2 boys to go to a playscheme for 6 weeks ! Utter madness.

Well done you! How do you feel - liberated? I've been debating doing very same thing. Enjoy spending all that time with your boys.

Good for you - also in the same boat regards childrens tax credit. My Dh hates paying for holiday clubs therefore palms the older one off on his Mother (who dosn't like doing it......)as often as he can - holiday clubs when can't. Don't know what will happen when Dd2 goes to school!!

Umm, pretty good actually. I didn't really want to go back in the first place so this is a bit of blessing in disguise, though DP ha warned me that I'm 'not to spend all day on mumsnet', as if !!!

Are you excited? Congratulations on your new liberty - you sound like it's something you really wanted. Right now I'd love to have no work (don't suppose it would last though). One thing, I wonder why you call it 'my childcare" and say it comes out of your earnings? I pay the majority of what our nanny costs because dh pays maintenance for his daughter and I earn more, but it's not my childcare. If dh earned more I'd not pay so much.

Well done, I am on maternity leave. Its hard work but so much more rewarding than work. Unfortunately we cannot afford for me to resign - I would love to. Still hoping that they will make me redudant !! Other plan is to leave London - pretty drastic.

Aloha, I referred to it as 'my childcare' because that's the way it came out - nothing more sinister . It wouldn't matter if our childcare came out of mine or DPs wages as it would still cost the same and we'd still have the same outgoings from our 'pooled earnings' IYKWIM. I pay it out of my wages because I have most to do with the childminder and therefore it is easier for me to get the cash for her than to have to rely on DPs dodgy memory !

I see what you mean www. Several people I know pay out of their wages, despite their dh's earning more, which I think is awfu. It's obviously totally different if you're paying out of pooled finances - and you don't love your work.

I resigned when ds2 was 9 months old. He's now 4 and I've had a wonderful time. The time spent with them more then compensates for the lack of spare cash and holiday budget restrictions. dd1 &ds2 will be in school full time in Sept ... ought I to return to work. I'm (was) a teacher so childcare is slightly easier!

I resigned just over two years ago and now, in addition to the 2 sons I had then, I also have another son aged 1.

My life is probably busier now than when I was in 'employment'. As well as being a full-time taxi driver (to Mother & Toddler/Playgroup/School and back) etc, I also take an active part in helping at Mother & Toddler and was recently appointed to the chair of the management committee for a new local Playgroup! Also, I have met far more local mums and made new friends in this time, than I ever would have if working.

WSM, like you, and despite being in management with a half decent salary, the bulk of my earnings (albeit not actual as paid jointly by hubby and me) went out to paying the private nursery. I left just before my eldest was due to start school - the logistics of that would have been a nightmare.

good luck wsm. i really envy you. enjoy it - you can always go back to work later. what a liberating experience you are going through!!

I do/did enjoy my job (I'm working my 4 week notice period). It's interesting and stimulating but we are just haemorrhaging money with childcare costs at the mo.

I know what you mean about the financial independence thing sb34. I fuond it REALLY difficult to adjust when I left full time work to have DD. But I am no more financially independent working my current 20 hour week than I was when I stayed at home all day, due to childcare, tax and pension commitments ! How crazy is that ?!

Well done Sb34, I did same a year ago and yes it is weird how your workmates so quickly accept your absence, (in my case they had organised a replacement before I'd even finished speaking).

good for you wsm & sb34! I am desperate to leave my job also, dd is 13 months old, and i've been back at work full time since she was 6.5 months. Hating it more and more every day, especially since dd cried last week when i went to pick her up from the childminders...WHY am i doing this?? Not sure it would go down too well with dh if I gave in my notice, esp since we might be moving house soon (bigger mortgage etc)...

Congrats from me too sb34, enjoy - and focus on their reaction as being one of the valid reasons for throwing in the towel. It says nothing bad about you as a person AT ALL. I love my job (especially now I'm on mat leave ) but would pack it in like a shot if I could afford to as I would honestly sooner be a SAHP.
