A question for employers.

ive never understood why a cv needs to be page or 2 to me if they want the right person they in theory should study all cvs ?

I have a 20+ year professional career, experience across multiple industries and multiple quals. I have a 1 page and a 2 page CV. If orgs are sifting 300+ applications they don’t have time to read 15 pages of utter drivel.

I think, if you haven’t been on the recruitment side, it’s very hard to understand what it’s like having to wade through the many applications. Even allowing two minutes per application means it adds up to hours of time taken up. That’s why CVs need to be succinct. No one has time to read multiple pages when the applicant hasn’t bothered to tailor it to the person specification.

We don’t use AI to filter and applications are anonymous, although someone from HR does the first sift (often removing around a third to a half of the applications) who haven’t filled in all the sections, don’t have the right to work on the U.K. or have failed to follow instructions. We can’t see names or addresses at the application stage so have no idea if someone lives near the work or not.

After that it comes to someone on the interview panel. Probably still looking at 30-50 applications. It’s a case of ticking through them to see which essential and desirable criteria have been met. We’ll interview a maximum of six and if there aren’t enough that meet the essential
criteria then we’d consider some that drop one or two of those, depending on their other skills or experience.

The main issues are:
Failing to follow the application instructions.
Failure to demonstrate how you meet
the criteria.
Failure to check if the hybrid working arrangements suit you. We make it very clear how much work is expected on site but still get candidates suddenly wanting totally remote.

It’s also common for interview candidates to state they aren’t available on the advertised interview date and to demand flexibility. The interview date is normally set well in advance because of senior colleagues’ availability and publicised on the job advert. It’s difficult to change dates at the last minute, although we do do our best. And also means other candidates, who have been interviewed on the original date, are kept waiting. The risk there is missing out on a good candidate or them getting annoyed with the wait and changing their mind about the employer.

so then why recruit if you know how long it can take ?

Have you hit your head?

They recruit because they need someone to do a job.

You can make it clear if you’re the right person in a page or two by pulling out the aspects of your skills and experience that meet the criteria.

Because I need the staff, but I have a day job to do, I don’t have an infinite amount of time to spend recruitment. 2 pages is plenty to get a good feel for a candidate and progress them to second stage.

true but overall it would seem more efficient overall for a fully detailed cv first because otherwise your still buring time just spreading it out

thats understandable, i guess if you need someone who can cook and know what meat is what, then it helps for them to have that on the first page.

overall whats your general most important tips for writing a cv for a specific role ? that questions also applies anyone who can answer it

but then why rush through the process and potential get a lower quality person when if they took their time they could have a good fit ?

Well no, a cv allows me to narrow down from dozens to about 5, and then I spend an hour each with the final 5 (or so) to really drill into their experience. A CV can only tell you so much, I want to see how someone talks, interacts, recalls information. I need to interview, but I only want to interview a small amount.

This system has been in place for DECADES. Your suggestion is in no way efficient at all.

I don’t want your life history. I don’t want to know who your favourite teacher was or about your teenage paper round. Keep it succinct so I can see how you meet the requirements and keep the irrelevant waffle out.

sometimes depending on the role the devil is in the details that could get the right person

long time does not mean its the best system, people could walk for years so why the need to invent the car when you could still travel by horse or cart / walk etc

Hard disagree. Nobody is employing you off the back of a CV alone.

Yeah, well done. You’ve had us all going but you’re clearly a wind up merchant. Nobody could be this naive.

theres noting wrong in the logic i used, and its true humans may do x for years and many could say its a good system, but overall does not mean its the only way to do the activity

80% of them are written by AI now. So no, no psychological insight.

(My first degree was in psychology. You’re talking out of your arse.)

i was using that to agree that like in the film telling him about themselves is only one part eg the cv, the other part is them proving themselves / their skills.

but if they are ai then thats the fault of the recruiters not saying ai is or is not allowed you let people use the tools and they will use them
