@WhatsGoingOnHere123 Just to give you a bit of positivity, Im one of those people who has made it back after a career break.

11 years ago (to the day!) I left a company id been with for many years, and moved abroad with DH & Kids. We came back as covid shut the world down!

First job back was way under previous experience (they were desperate, and so was I) But over 4 years i got very nearly a 50% payrise.
Then jumped to new company, and have very rapidly been promoted to pretty much the role I walked out of.

You need the right person to see your CV, and a company with the right attitude. But it is possible. Good luck!

Too many applications.
Applicants that don't tailor their applications to the role.
Those who don't follow instructions.
People way over-qualified or with irrelevant experience.

As a recruiter you'll be lucky if I spend more than 30 seconds reviewing your CV and cover letter in the first round. I'm looking for reasons to reject to trim my list down, so if there are typos, bad formatting, no cover letter as required, you're going straight in the bin.

This.

Bad spelling/grammar? Bin

Not remotely suitable for the role? Bin

Not following the process, trying to ring up because they think it makes them stand out? Bin.

Any mention of sexuality, religion or gender identity? Bin.

Basically, if they are lazy, no attention to detail, prone to drama and seem likely to bring their politics into work, I don't want them.

Overqualified isn't an issue really, it depends on the role and why they're wanting a step down.

Yea I wont lie, pronoun CVs get scrutinised probably more than normal 😬

Thank you @DandelionClockSeeds . Bit of positivity much needed atm 😄

dontlookatmee · 16/07/2026 15:20

@MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack thank you, that's a really good way to think about it. The hiring process was very "corporate" and quite structured, so it's hard to say - I didn't get a strong feeling either way. The firm does talk a big game about gender equality, culture, etc. but so did the first one I worked for and it was all BS, whereas my second employer never even mentioned that type of thing and was great, so who knows!

I see the original poster hasn’t been back at all …

Ive toyed with the idea of stating AI applications will not be accepted but after chatting to others we all agreed that it does work as a pretty decent reject criteria.

Someone thinking its acceptable to use AI for a job application, so needing to be informed it isnt, isnt the sort of person we'd want to employ in the first place.

but thats no different than the old days of letting a friend edit your cv / cover letter so why is ai any different than another person obviously as long as the person edits the ai version etc ?

Wacky CVs produced on Canva, including self-assessed star ratings of their skills

And then they give themselves 2* on quarter of these....

what if it was a strengths and weaknesses skills part of the cv would that be good or bad ?

Why would you have a weakness section in a CV?!

Zippedydoobaah · 16/07/2026 19:27

What should be on a cover letter?

be honest because they would ask anyway so being upfront

Ha ha. People aren’t editing the AI.

My employer won’t state that candidates can’t use it (there’s “guidance” saying it should only be used to check spelling and grammar and tone and not to generate answers but I swear we had the same stuff appearing across different applications. 🙄

My employer also thinks it would be discriminatory to ban its use as it may help people that are neurodivergent etc. The thing is, they don’t get the help at interview, so all you are doing is stopping a capable person from getting through.

Never ever have a weaknesses section, a hobbies section, an “about me” section. Absolute cringe.

No I really wouldn’t do that. It’s not asked in every interview (think I’ve only ever been asked it once) but if it is you have the time to give a strategic, self aware answer; CV space is limited enough as it is.

fair points, although daft if dont edited it etc

ive never understood why a cv needs to be page or 2 to me if they want the right person they in theory should study all cvs ?

momager22 · 16/07/2026 20:53

These are very broad questions.
You can either use an agency who do all of the grunt work for you or do it in house.
The worst thing for me is the vast amount of people who don’t meet the person specification in any way (and often don’t have the right to work in the uk or are on a law visa) who are
clearly applying for anything and everything.

Because you can have dozens of people applying, sometimes even in the hundreds, you haven’t got time to read reams and reams of information.

so then why recruit if you know how long it can take ?

Because I need the staff, but I have a day job to do, I don’t have an infinite amount of time to spend recruitment. 2 pages is plenty to get a good feel for a candidate and progress them to second stage.
