Help with holiday entitlement

Need some help understanding annual leave.
I am a part time worker I work 22.hrs per week Monday to friday.
My annual leave year runs from 1st Jan to December 31st.
My contract states 28 days that's including bank holidays.
Having problems understanding how to work out my entitlement.
So for example last year I took 10 days annual leave, then I took a further 8 days a few weeks later, which was all approved, the 8 days I didn't get any annual leave pay at all as I was told I'd gone over my annual leave entitlement,
I have been told to look at my wage slip each month to see how much I've accrued each month.
So for example I've looked at my most current wage slip of end of Feb and so far I've worked 2 months and accrued 132.00 of holiday,I've been told my hoilday is based on hours but the accrued holiday on my wage slip is 132.00 which is in pounds,
Please if I am wrong,I thought you only had to accrue holiday if you are new to a company or started part way through the year,I have been at this company for 5 years,if anyone can help me work out my annual leave and does 2 days or 9 hrs seem enough annual leave for working 2 months so far this year?

It should be worked out in hours but very roughly you'll get just over half the entitlement

Geneticsbunny · 11/03/2025 10:48

If you work every day then you should end up with the same number of "days" so 28. Right?

Thank you for responding so I looked on the government website it says in hours is 126hrs,which in days is 28,so have I been doing my annual leave wrong the whole time,I have been with this company, so do I only get 63hrs if I half the 126hrs or am I readying this completely wrong?

She should get the same number of days as full time staff but her 'day' will only be 4.5 hours long

In hours it would be 5.6 x 22.5 = 126 hours = 28 days of 4.5 hours

You haven't been doing your leave wrong. Sounds like your employer is doing a shit job at calculating your annual leave

Gizlotsmum · 11/03/2025 10:53

How many hours is full time. What holiday entitlement is full time? You can then work out your entitlement. By dividing the number of hours you work over full time hours and then multiply the holiday entitlement by that. But you need the leave in hours if you work shorter days

In hours 126 in days 28,so not sure how last year I booked 18 days or whatever that is in hours, how I have exceeded my annual leave entitlement and didn't get paid anything for them 8 days

Your employer is shafting you and is underpaying your leave. You are entitled to 28 days of 4.5 hours leave

Thats a bonkers way of working out leave. What has pay got to do with it?

If its worked out on accruing leave then you get 1 twelfth leave for every month you work so for 2 months it would be 2 twelfths of 28 = 4.66 days accrued = 21 hours

needapokerface · 11/03/2025 11:02

Take the bank holidays out, as i assume you take them off on the actual day. That leaves 20 days at 4.5 hrs per day.

If you accrue holiday in money to work out how much leave you will get paid for divide the amount by your hourly rate.

Thank you for your response, that's what I do I leave the 8 days bank holiday and ever since I've been with the company I have always booked just 20 days

12.00 per hour so that's 54.00 per day

We do now have to take pay into account because your holiday has to account for regular overtime. It complicates matters somewhat.

But basically you are entitled to 28 days holiday per year and each day = 4.5 hours.

So from 1st January you will have accrued 4.6 days but I presume one of those was used for New Year's Day. By the end of this month you will have accrued an extra 2.3 days.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 11/03/2025 11:12

Are you through an agency or are you on a permanent contract?

So I did just post my current accrued holiday from my wage slip on here,so 132.00 does that seem right,or in hours is just over 9hrs 2 days

Do you take the bank holidays off as they occur? If so, that accounts for 8 days immediately (or 36 hours).
That leaves 20 days (or 90 hours) to take.
If you accrue it, it's 11.33 hours per month.
I think your employer has got it wrong as it's actually pretty straightforward so I'd go back to them.

Comefromaway · 11/03/2025 11:14

There is a way of working out holidays often used for irregular hours workers called Holiday Fund.

You accrue 12.07% of your wage each month into a holiday fund. When you take holiday you are paid out of that fund your normal hourly rate x number of hours you usually work that day.

I have a contract that cleary states 28 days or part time is worked out pro rata,so just trying to understand why I was not paid for the 8 days annual leave, after I queried it I was told I did not accrue enough holiday to take then 8 days and that's why I was not paid but the holiday was approved by my company
