@Chrissols but what would happen if you (or someone starting out as working from home) bought a laptop, worked full time 9-5, Monday to Friday, trying to claim expenses -laptop, broadband, electricity, gas etc and spent more than £1000 as gas etc is not cheap and it all mounts up. You would then need to show the breakdown of your expenses.

Chrissols · 04/12/2023 15:44

@Gally123 Yes there was one year I bought a new PC so I put that through - but that was a one-off - now I do as advised by the accountant and claim the £1,000 as it is more allowance than I would get otherwise. As I say, it is each to their own, we all have our own ways, but I am going down the route where I pay the least tax at the end of the year 😊

Gally123 · 04/12/2023 16:17

@Chrissols so the best method is to keep a full account of expenses and hours worked (as advised by HMRC) so that at the end of the year you know whether you are better off claiming the allowance or putting through your actual expenses if they are more than £1,000.

Whitestar55 · 04/12/2023 16:19

Chrissols · 04/12/2023 15:29

@Gally123 That's why I claim the £1,000 allowance 😊

How do we go about claiming the £1000 allowance please?

OP posts:
Chrissols · 04/12/2023 16:33

@Gally123 Well yes if you think you are going to get anywhere near the £1,000, but I certainly don't just sitting typing with hardly any expenses. As said, each to their own way of working, but I 100% know I would not get anywhere near the allowance so would end up with less in my pocket. I am just going with the most financially rewarding way to me that's all. @Whitestar55 My accountant puts in on my self assessment for me, but will fish it out tomorrow and see how he does it - it is very easy from what I remember 😊

Gally123 · 04/12/2023 17:53

@Whitestar55 you tick the "I want to claim the trading allowance" box on your self assessment form.

carosel2 · 05/12/2023 09:23

@Gally123 - I dont claim for gas electric broadband etc because I never reach over the amount to pay tax so I dont have to list hours. Ive only ever put down receipts for proof of purchase of laptop/computer/printer and stamps, and paper, ink cartridges etc but even then it still hasnt taken me to the full amount of earning any tax. I work part time. I dont put in the hours enough to earn a lot of money but what I do earn is enough for me. I suppose I may benefit from the £1000 but I dont understand how that works if I dont earn enough, would I be entitled to it?

Gally123 · 05/12/2023 09:28

@carosel2 of you don't pay any tax what is the benefit of claiming an allowance? It is an allowance of up to £1,000 which comes off the tax you owe, if you owe nothing, I cannot see any benefit, you would still owe nothing.

carosel2 · 05/12/2023 09:42

@Gally123 - Yes just read abt it. Wasnt understanding of it as ive not heard abt it until this thread of comments so no tax to pay no allowance needed. It doesnt apply to me

Whitestar55 · 05/12/2023 10:07

@Gally123 @Chrissols Thanks for the info.

Just when you think the lack of work can't get any worse, the Junior Doctors are going on strike in Dec & January! Oh joy!

Lollybaz · 05/12/2023 13:40

@Billybea yes I just saw that, whilst I totally agree with them striking because they are overworked & underpaid it's going to be quiet enough in December with the holidays too! I think I need to start looking around for a different job.

Pinksville · 05/12/2023 15:08

My list today is beyond words. I would rather be cold and buy less food than subject my ears to this shit show of work that DICT8 has to offer. I read today on my news feed about the huge amount of people in the caring profession who are unable to speak basic English - I believe I have come across 70 % of them today !!! 😖

cathyk2002 · 05/12/2023 15:39

I sympathise with you Pinksville I think I'm getting used to some of the 'ethnics' now as have done a few today but it's like 'party time' when I get an English accent !!!!😂

Pinksville · 05/12/2023 16:30

@cathyk2002 😂😂😂it is !!! makes me feel all warm and fluffy 😂

Not sure how I'll stand as my first time doing this (started in June) as I am on PIP, have State Pension & 2 private pensions, one of which is taxed🙄

carosel2 · 05/12/2023 20:32

@cathyk2002 - my take on it now is as what @Gally123 said if what you earn self employed plus any pension and extra income coming in and all expenses taken off does NOT exceed the £12,570 (the amount anyone is allowed to earn before tax you CANNOT apply for the £1000 allowance. You can only claim for it only if all your incomings exceed that amount to be able to knock off up to £1000 off your tax bill, I think! 🤔

Gally123 · 05/12/2023 20:36

@cathyk2002 you won't have to worry about anything until the next financial year starts April 2024, then you will need to complete a self- assessment tax form from June 2023 until beg April 2024. You will need to include any work you did prior to June 2023 (so that any tax etc you paid as an employee in NHS for example is taken into consideration), include all your pensions as income etc.

You can include whatever start up expenses you incurred (?new laptop, foot pedal, ear phones) and ongoing expenses (gas for heating one room only during working hours only) electric (for running laptop, lights etc when working) and broadband (working hours only). Also a lot depends on whether you are now working full time with DICT8 (assuming there is work to do) or only a couple of hours a day. HMRC run Youtube seminars etc to help people on what expenses they can claim and how to work them out. You may find it is worth you claiming the allowance.

cathyk2002 · 05/12/2023 20:40

carosel2 Should be OK to claim it then as monthly around 1200 in pensions (although one is taxed) as PIP does not come into it, then add in Dict8🤔

Gally123 Been retired for 2 years now. If it wasn't for a complete ar*e of a jobsworth line manager I would still be working in Hossie !! 😡Just missed all the typing which really helps out the patients, which I loved doing

Gally123 · 05/12/2023 20:41

@carosel2 - it's not that you cannot apply for the allowance, it is just as you pay no tax there is no point. You can try and claim it, but if you pay nothing, the allowance is not going to decrease a non-existent tax bill.

However, you can claim the allowances OR expenses, you cannot do both.

carosel2 · 05/12/2023 21:29

@cathyk2002 -:yeah go for it ! 😊

danblack87 · 06/12/2023 11:12

Since Saturday I have earnt the princely sum of £5.98 ... that is crap pay per hour (is it not?) ... daren't even work that out (6-7 hours a day at laptop for £5.98)!!!????

Doglover61 · 06/12/2023 13:21

Is there something going on with Dict8? Are they losing business or something? I messaged them a few weeks back asking about what is happening with workload and they said it was due to the dr strikes and the in house secretaries had caught up and that it should pick up very soon. That was 9 weeks ago and it is getting worse. One letter an hour on the system that people are competing for. Are we not getting told something?

Billybea · 06/12/2023 14:22

@Doglover61 they lost the GSST contract in early October hence the lack of work.

Doglover61 · 06/12/2023 16:29

It would have been good to tell people they lost the contract!
