Hi all, has anyone else started a new thread yet?

OP posts:
Meha5a · 05/07/2022 15:12

I like the job agency adverts online that state good attention to detail and are full of spelling mistakes

Whitestar55 · 05/07/2022 16:10

@Meha5a Yes, the NHS jobs website is a good one for that.

Did some dict8 last night for the first time in ages and got this feedback.....Please do not indent lists under headings, unless specifically asked to do so by clinician.
As soon as you press the number button it indents automatically. I've never not indented a list since starting typing in March, is this a new gripe?

Gally123 · 05/07/2022 17:19

@bluebell8329 - I have not had that particularly gripe but I did have feedback to tell me to something differently that I had done regularly for the last nine years! (And as mentioned in their booklet when I joined). I do not use the number button as I do not think that counts towards the character count for payment (it does not in TPro) and always type out the numbers in a list.

bluebell8329 · 05/07/2022 18:30

Are there new rules we don't know about? New proof readers? In all my years as a secretary I've never had a consultation tell me when to indent.

danblack87 · 05/07/2022 22:15

@bluebell8329 I am not quite sure what your post means. As far as I know, and have always done: there is Diagnosis (header): if there is only one diagnosis it goes directly underneath without paragraphing if there are more than one diagnoses then that would would be using the the bullet points 'button' 1, 2, 3 etc without indentation; same as for medications(s). So Current medication if only one goes directly under the heading - more than one requires the use of bullet point 1, 2 3. Am I missing something here because I have never been pulled up about it and it is on the Standard Dict8 formatting?

Whitestar55 · 06/07/2022 00:14

I actually look forward to the silly feedback about things that aren't clinically significant now and I ignore it and do my thing anyway 😂

Whitestar55 · 06/07/2022 00:16

Own thing, that should say!

OP posts:
Whitestar55 · 06/07/2022 00:24

@danblack87 I'm sure at one time the rule was to number even a single diagnosis. Nearly everything about the Dict8 layout goes against what I was taught at college.

OP posts:
Lovemydaxie · 06/07/2022 07:02

I've always numbered even a single diagnosis but not indented the list. Never been pulled up on it.

Chrissols · 06/07/2022 07:19

@Lovemydaxie I do it that way too, it’s the way I was told to my Dict8 years ago and never been pulled up. I do know though, with still doing bank work in the NHS, ones that are indented are a nightmare on one particular system and take a lot of time to re format

Gally123 · 06/07/2022 07:26

I see we can now earn £12,275 before earning tax - this could be me soon

Meha5a · 06/07/2022 09:34

Personally I think DICT8/proofreaders use the Stockholm syndrome on us 🤣

danblack87 · 06/07/2022 10:18

I do wish adverts would not pop up on this site ... It is a pain ... I like the old site better.

So what I have always done when listing numbers is use the number/bullet button which indents the numbers and makes a list, yesterday was the first time I have had any feedback saying not to do it this way.

Frazzledbynature · 06/07/2022 11:02

Gally123 · 05/07/2022 12:00

@Frazzledbynature - don't forget to hire a professional editor etc for your books when you are ready for that stage. I have a couple of friends who are authors and one was recently sent a book to review - littered with spelling mistakes where the person had spelt phonetically, no syntax, no research on the subject etc, and the person was planning to put it direct on Amazon and expecting people to buy it!

Oh dear, not good. I'm not at that point yet. They are stories i wrote as a teenager and as I've read through them my hubby gave me the idea of trying to inter link them so they become part of the same dystopian world. I've a lot of timeline planning but I think its doable. Not rushing them though, they are truely shorter than short at the moment, so theres a lot of character building and planning to do. :D

Many thanks for your input though, x

Frazzledbynature · 06/07/2022 11:11

Whitestar55 · 05/07/2022 13:09

On the subject of editing, does anyone else find that when watching videos on YouTube that have text subtitle thingies, you notice the mistakes and want to correct them?

Oh my god yes! lol do your head in don't they? I don't do it but I feel like I want to go around spellchecking everyone on social media!

As for being a proficient editor, hmm I probably would need someone good at checking over the book, I can't ask the husband, I’m spellchecking him all the time as it is lol. I've not been a big reader until recently getting back into it again but even well published books still get typos too.

I was following the Johnny Depp case, my heart went out to the stenographer. At least we get to walk around more. I'm terrible for sitting and learned my lessons I watched her stretch every break time. She had a lot of "grammer" to get around bless her lol.

Frazzledbynature · 06/07/2022 11:15

Whitestar55 · 05/07/2022 14:46

I'm wondering if the subtitles are done by voice recognition, although if they are done by a person live, I know I wouldn't be able to listen and type fast enough to keep up.

I recently saw a transcribers job and wondered if it was in relation to sub titles actually. they wanted typists who typed at 80 wpm. Its been a while since i've tested my speed and i'm not near it now. So I guess I'm "over the hill" then again, I proved i could increase my speed on the tests, but carpal tunnel isn't worth the effot, the money was something like 60p per minute. It was supposed to cover tv/film media.

Whitestar55 · 06/07/2022 11:17

Dict8 at one time did tell us to number even a single diagnosis and to use the number list function (which indents automatically). Perhaps a Trust has complained about the indenting for the reasons @Gally123 mentioned. Dict8 appears to adapt the layout occasionally through trial and error. I don't think it's a personal dig at any of us, although it is annoying and confusing.

Lovemydaxie · 06/07/2022 07:02

I've always numbered even a single diagnosis but not indented the list. Never been pulled up on it.

That's what I've been doing. Including the medication and any other heading, tests included. It looks hideous to me but if its what they want.
when they start adding in numbers i just state the note to secretary with the words "adding list below" or something then type the number and line with no indents. I guess i'm not due a critique yet but its coming... lol

Frazzledbynature · 06/07/2022 12:01

ouch. just listening to some results and had to add note to Dr "background noise couldn't hear results" wanted to add "do you have a blackboard?" it sounded just like someone had took their fingernails to one :/

danblack87 · 06/07/2022 14:19

@bluebell8329 SO, if you are doing it the same way as me and mostly everyone else I can't understand why you had feedback on that? That's why I queried. The number bullet point automatically indents does it not??!!! - so long as we do not put our own indentation in that is fine as I think That is really weird feedback. Also, if there is more than one diagnosis and more than one management plan/outcome/medication I do it that way too. Maybe there is a new proof reader ... It's a minefield out there guys!!! As @Gally123 and @Whitestar55 say there can be problems with certain end-user systems which I understand; hence, I always use the designated 'bullet key'.

danblack87 · 06/07/2022 14:30

There is a problem with the format regarding bullet points and 1/2/3 because sometimes a dictator will say Number 1/2/3 and then under 3 wish to add a/b/c but there is no facility for that especially when followed by 4/5/6!!! It cannot be done!! So then one just has to create, cross fingers and hope for no feedback ... they are rare though LOL

Gally123 · 06/07/2022 15:41

@danblack87 I used to have one chap whose numbering was a nightmare. Often he would start numbering mid letter at something like "4" and I would have to guess where the previous numbers were situated and he would also subnumber so I would use I, II, III etc to distinguish between the 1,2,3.

Carlymarie89 · 06/07/2022 15:48

This feedback is irking me a bit that I keep getting from them 😂

i didn’t type out abbreviations as any other time they’d be on my back, now it’s ok to abbreviate. Don’t capitalise medication, if clinic date and typing date is the same type twice?

funny thing is when we’ve had work come back from dict8 in the past I’ve always changed it 😂
