DD subjected to horrendous sexual harrassment at work by chefs

My DD 17 started working at a nice (?) country house hotel a couple of months ago. She really loved it to begin with but now she is not wanting to go in for her shifts. She finally told me what it was really like working there - the chefs swear and belittle her (and the other waitresses) on a daily basis. They use foul and sexual language all the time. They tell her to Fing take the food. When she said something back to one of them the head chef told her to - just do your Fing job! You're irrelevant here! She said she had to go away and cry for 20 mins. As you can imagine I am absolutely fuming. This is not all of it either. The rest is really too disgusting and upsetting to repeat. She doesn't want me to speak to the Manager she wants to earn money to save for a car - but I am going to have to. What would you do?

This is typical. Chefs and bartenders harass the wait staff.

‘Twas the same 30 years ago when I was waitressing at university, on another continent. Kitchens are high pressure places. There is foul language and aggression. Lots of posturing and dominance.

I was treated in ways I wouldn’t want my daughters to be.

Me too.

Ours gave us see-thru blouses and used to shut me in the walk-in fridge or freezer to “make my nipples hard for him”. 🤮

I was 15 when I started there. :(

Wonder if that’s a reason I went into HR. 🤔

Small update - the Manager has been sacked. Nothing to do with us but I like to believe in karma 😀

The hospitality industry can be such a foul place. So much bullying, so many macho displays, so much substance abuse. I’m surprised there hasn’t been more of a reckoning for the industry since the Me Too movement. There was an exposé on what goes on in Tom Kitchin’s restaurants, but I doubt it will have had much impact on his business.

But I’d advise your daughter to leave. You say it’s not easy for her to find another job as she’s not massively confident, but I can’t imagine this kind of work environment will be very good for her confidence either. She should leave in a blaze of glory, detailing to all and sundry what goes on there.

Ah I see there has been no progression in the last 25 years....

I had the same thing when I was a 15 yr old waitress. The chef was an obnoxious pig.

I left and never waitressed again!

Me too, exactly this
