What day off would you have?

I've just been offered a job which Im going to take, and they've agreed to 4 days. I currently have Fridays off, but they've asked I take a different day as my line manager would have Fridays and they want cover across the department.

At the moment Im considering Mondays (so no BH issues, and effectively I should win in terms of holiday entitlement), or maybe Wednesdays to break up the week. But Mondays can also be a bit rubbish - some businesses can be closed etc.

What would you choose and why?

Monday for absolute sure.

On man. I'm just imagining a world without Mondays.... 🤤

maddy68 · 11/03/2022 15:43

I would want either a Monday or Friday. But if they said Monday (having changed from a Friday ) I would ask for a day off in lieu of my day off falls on a bank holiday ?

blibblibs · 11/03/2022 15:43

I have Fridays off but would have preferred Mondays, purely from the BH issue.

Chasingsquirrels · 11/03/2022 15:44

I don't work Fridays.
Previously I've had Tuesday & Friday off.

I don't think I'd choose Monday, as in my organisation we have update meetings etc at the start of the week.

But I can flex my time if I want Monday off.

Hmm, I'd probably go for Wed or Thu.

Willowkins · 11/03/2022 15:47

When I did this, I took Wednesdays off. Mondays weren't as bad when I had the 'mini weekend' to look forward to.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/03/2022 15:48

I have Thursdays off, but have to be in on Friday and Monday. It eases me into the weekend, but I would prefer Monday as well due to BHs.

pumpkinpie01 · 11/03/2022 15:48

I have a Thursday off , it's great just going back for one day before the weekend

IsThisNameTaken · 11/03/2022 15:48

Definitely Monday if you can't have Friday. I tried Mon, Fri and Weds and weds was the worst. It was like having to start the week twice. A 3 day weekend is great.

Monday

Move22 · 11/03/2022 15:50

Wednesday

Otherwise every time the bank hoIiday comes along, you feel like you’re losing out!

I.e. your family are all at home with you on your ’day off’!

Howshouldibehave · 11/03/2022 15:51

Why are having Mondays off ‘good’ from a Bank Holiday issue?

It may be different in my job (teacher) but if you work Mondays, you get more Bank Holidays off than if you work any other day.

User69734 · 11/03/2022 15:51

I’m probably missing something but wouldn’t Mondays be worse because of the bank holidays? As you would miss your day off several times a year?

Savvysix1984 · 11/03/2022 15:52

Monday

PurpleBag · 11/03/2022 15:52

I had Mondays off which meant I could take my BH entitlement whenever I liked. I don't think they legally have to give you them though.

PixieDreams · 11/03/2022 15:52

I used to love having Wednesday off. It broke the week up nicely and gave it balance.

2anddone · 11/03/2022 15:54

I have Wednesdays off. I love it work 2 days, get 1 day off, work 2 days, get 2 days off means if it's a bad day I am only ever 18 hours at most away from a day off plus on a BH week I get a 3 day weekend then only have to work 1 day before having a day off. I am self employed though so holiday entitlement isn't affected as I close when I want/need to.

WellNotReally · 11/03/2022 15:54

Mondays. No Sunday night feeling and the bank holiday issue makes it a no brainer

jessieminto · 11/03/2022 15:54

I'd do Wed but only because I'm disabled and get fatigued. It would break up the week nicely and give me a chance to recharge.

EmmaStone · 11/03/2022 15:55

Yes if your annual entitlement includes BH (so in my case, 33 days inclusive of BHs, pro rated), I'd be having Mondays off anyway, so I'd be able to use those holiday days at another time.

I'd be entitled to 80% of BHs, so if they all fell on working days, I would have to use the remainder of my holiday entitlement to cover the 20% shortfall.

Always a Friday or Monday

I love my day off

Because bank holidays are a statutory requirement, I get the time back for those days off that are a bank holiday. I typically gain an additional week annual leave for this.

No. If you your day off is Monday anyway, most organisations then give you the BH time to take whenever you want because you haven't had any additional BH hours off.
Flexitarian · 11/03/2022 15:56

I used to like Wednesdays off because it was never more than two days till the next day off. The midweek one allowed me to get straight at home rather than everything piling up and me having to catch up on laundry and cleaning at the weekend.

woodhill · 11/03/2022 15:58

I'd rather have Friday as you also, get the BHM apart from the lockdown 2020 ( who thought that up Friday) non Monday mayday which was rubbish

schroeder · 11/03/2022 15:58

Wednesday is best, I used to love my Wednesday off, breaks up the week and places are usually quiet too, mm Ikea on a Wednesday is lovely. Grin
Try getting a hair appointment on a Monday.
