What day off would you have?

I've just been offered a job which Im going to take, and they've agreed to 4 days. I currently have Fridays off, but they've asked I take a different day as my line manager would have Fridays and they want cover across the department.

At the moment Im considering Mondays (so no BH issues, and effectively I should win in terms of holiday entitlement), or maybe Wednesdays to break up the week. But Mondays can also be a bit rubbish - some businesses can be closed etc.

What would you choose and why?

I’ve had Wednesdays off before and that was lovely as you only ever work two days before you get a break. Only problem is you may find it difficult to catch up with friends on that day as they probably won’t have Wednesdays off.

I don’t like a Monday off particularly. You miss out on all the Monday chat about the weekend and people have moved on by Tuesday! And I always felt like I was then trying to catch up on emails and work.

Madcats · 11/03/2022 16:01

Do you go away for minibreaks etc?

Accommodation is often cheaper in Sunday nights and Centre Parcs/self catering short breaks tend to be Monday-Frida and Friday to Monday.

I would always have a Monday off for that reason.

Saying that a lot of restaurants in my touristy city don't bother opening on Mondays as the tourist numbers are still quite low.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 11/03/2022 16:04

Monday definitely. No Sunday night stress, more flexibility with leave, 3 day weekend.

abw94 · 11/03/2022 16:06

I have a Wednesday off, lovely break in the week and most places (cafes/toddler places/hairdressers/beauty treatments) are open on a Wednesday, I find most are closed on a Monday.

ohidoliketobe · 11/03/2022 16:09

I've had Mondays, Fridays and Thursdays off on different contracts. Mondays just deffered the Monday feeling to a Tuesday, Fridays I felt I had missed a lot of the chasing people upon the actions and spend most of my Monday trying to mentally straighten myself up for what was needed to be be done that week, but I appreciate that angle is dependent on your role and workplace.

I currently have a Thursday off, as I have childcare for Monday and Friday and youngest DC is in nursery Tues and Weds. It's definitely my preference and it's worked out nice. Do a 3 day block Mon-Weds then back in on Friday as a day spent finishing off/ chasing up that weeks priorities and setting up my to do list for the next week.

Ime a mid week day off is quieter as most people take Monday or Friday. So shops, activities like the Zoo are m all much quieter.

ohidoliketobe · 11/03/2022 16:10

Abw94 raises a great point about hairdressers being shut on a Monday. With Mondays you are definitely limited with what you can do on that day

NorthSouthcatlady · 11/03/2022 16:13

I vote Wednesday -l am contemplating doing similar

Iheartmysmart · 11/03/2022 16:14

I used to have Wednesday as my day off. It was great, whenever there was a bank holiday weekend I’d book the Tuesday as leave and have a nice 5 day break and only use 1 day’s holiday.

Livelifeinthebuslane · 11/03/2022 16:16

I loved Mondays, no Sunday night feeling, and unlike a PP I never got the same feeling on a Monday. And three days off in a row gives more opportunity to unwind.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 11/03/2022 16:16

@woodhill

I'd rather have Friday as you also, get the BHM apart from the lockdown 2020 ( who thought that up Friday) non Monday mayday which was rubbish
And this year a double bank holiday Thursday 2nd June and Fri 3rd June instead of Whitsun, due to Queens Platinum Jubilee. 2020s Friday Bank Holiday was to coincide with VE day .
WingingItEveryDay7 · 11/03/2022 16:24

Monday is the best day to have off as you'll be able to use the Pro-rata allowance another time! I end up with basically an extra week of holiday because I don't have to use any entitlement towards BH Mondays whereas my colleagues who work a Monday lose out big time!

MazzleDazzle · 11/03/2022 16:26

Mondays, without a doubt. Sunday night blues are a killer and for some reason I don’t seem to get Monday night blues.

FirmButFairMum · 11/03/2022 16:27

If you have Monday off your working week remains unchanged for most bank holidays, you’ll potentially feel like you don’t really benefit as you’re off anyway. Once we had a restructuring of staff days and I had to change to having Wednesdays off. Thought it would be awful but I loved it. 2 days in, one day off, 2 days in, 2 days off it was great 😊

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/03/2022 16:30

Wednesday.

You never work more than 2 days in a row, you aren't off long enough to come back to loads of work/emails and between Wednesday and being off again on Saturday the house doesn't have the chance to get really messy. Plus, it's not a common day off so you won't be clashing with anyone.

LadyDanburysHat · 11/03/2022 16:33

I'd take a Wednesday. You can't get you hair cut on a Monday for example. I also like the way it breaks up the week. When I have an odd day off to take I always do Wednesday.

canthecardsbewrong2022 · 11/03/2022 17:17

Wednesday as it is mid week but I am biased on I was also born on this day!

One of my last job was Wednesday off, current is Tuesday and it does kind of make a difference. Still don't get Sunday dread but it feels longer week then when I used to have Wednesday off.

unicornsarereal72 · 11/03/2022 17:33

I have Wednesday off it breaks the week up and I love it

Bank holidays should be calculated pro rota so you should get a set number of bank holiday hours to take in the same way as your annual leave.

robocracker · 11/03/2022 17:49

Wednesday then you effectively have 2 weekends.

Prob Monday is better if you like weekends away etc.

I have chronic pain so we'd would break the week up best for me!

iamsoreadyforbednow · 11/03/2022 17:51

I chose Monday and it’s blissful. Long weekend, can book a days holiday on a Friday and have a long weekend away. Wouldn’t choose another day.

Kitkat151 · 11/03/2022 18:05

@Howshouldibehave

Why are having Mondays off ‘good’ from a Bank Holiday issue?

It may be different in my job (teacher) but if you work Mondays, you get more Bank Holidays off than if you work any other day.

Because you get more holiday of course! You get the bank holiday off same as everyone else ....then are given an extra 6 hours to take whenever suits you....,winner winner

But you get all the extra leave with Monday’s....an extra 6 hours for every Monday bank holiday....to take whenever you like....can’t understand why you wouldn’t want a Monday 🤔....I always did when I worked 4 days
StarMouse879 · 11/03/2022 18:09

I have Thursdays off, which seemed a weird choice initially but I love it.

Three days to get some solid work done. Then a little break. Then a Friday. In fact, I often feel like I have two Fridays - because Wednesday also feels like Friday, but Friday never feels like Monday!

I also love taking a random Friday off and getting a four day weekend for only one day's leave. I did that today and it was fun.

applesandpears33 · 11/03/2022 18:10

If you have young kids I'd choose to have a Monday off - there are so many school holidays that fall on a Monday and it can be difficult to cover them all.

Starseeking · 11/03/2022 18:16

I'd have Wednesdays off so that I'd only ever have 2 days at work in a row. It sounds lovely!

EmmaStone · 11/03/2022 18:18

Kids are older (14 & 16) so don't particularly need to factor them in. I'm thinking Wednesday probably best for business - manager and I would have Thursday together as handover. And Monday always feels like such an important day to set up the week, although the BH issue is enticing (especially as I'm already losing 2 days' holiday entitlement with the new job). I do like the idea of having a little rest mid week to refresh.
