How many hours a week do you work?

As the title says really

I'm currently on 34.5 hour week and feeling really guilty as I want to reduce my hours due to the stress of the job. It's beginning to make me unhappy even thinking about going into work.
I've emailed HR to find out what the reduction in salary would be.

How many hours do you work - and would/have you reduced hours? Has this made for a happier work/life balance?

Usually, around 50.

I did once clock 82.5, didn't get out of bed for 2 days afterwards and then a few days after that I took a week off.

I am currently furloughed and it has made me realise I really need to address my work/life balance.

KVlovesWinter · 10/07/2020 00:46

Contracted for 37.5 over 5 days but usually do an extra 3-4 hours to add into my flexi time bank

undercoveraessedai · 10/07/2020 00:49

60-80ish but am self employed so it doesn't feel like work :)

flouncymcflouncerson · 10/07/2020 00:57

I’m contracted for 18.75 but I do 15 one week and 22.5 the next.

Chienloup · 10/07/2020 00:57

I work 30 hours a week, term-time only. I'm only one of two people in my county with my qualification, so I was in a good position to negotiate my working hours to suit me. Until January I was working 37.5 hours a week full-time year-round.
Prior to that, I used to be a teacher ft, but was actually working anything from 50-60 hours per week. I'm so glad that I now work in a job where the expectation is that you log off and stop working at the specified time and take TOIL when it is accrued. That is the thing which has massively improved my work-life balance.

28 hours in 4 days. I love having a day off. Kids are 6 and 8 now but when they were younger I just worked 3 days, and that was amazing!

Fortyfifty · 10/07/2020 07:56

25 over 3 days, but wfh I spread it over 4 days. Id like to go up to 32 hours over 4 days but my kids are teenagers. I've worked fewer hours for better mental health.

starsinyourpies · 10/07/2020 11:53

Full time slightly compressed. To be honest I found it more stressful part time as I was constantly playing catch up. The job was the same, I just got paid less! It depends on the kind of job though!

iklboo · 10/07/2020 12:02

I work 5 x 7 hours one week, 4 x 7 the next week. I so much look forward to my non working Friday (today).

Everypony · 10/07/2020 15:31

thanks @allThemostwonderfultimeoftheyear that is rare find term time jobs!!

@coffeewithmilk in your case I would reduce hours as you sound unhappy

i have somewhat the opposite question to you, of whether to move to a new job with more hours/stress but better career development, personal fulfilment etc. But i currently have flexibility, and moving to a new company after years mean proving myself all over again. I had a part time job before when DC were toddlers and hated it. Every way, you struggle with guilt. Any advice welcome...

Ragwort · 10/07/2020 17:27

I choose to work part time ... I am over 60, paid off my mortgage, DH earns a decent salary, we are supporting our DS (Older parents Grin) through university but no other child related costs.

I love my job but I enjoy doing other things as well ... volunteering in the community, seeing my elderly parents (fortunately still in good health but they are in their very late 80s so I am aware time is running out).

Ardnassa · 11/07/2020 14:26

About 50-60 hours a week. Love my job though (and well compensated) so I do not mind!

I know it is a tricky time to change jobs, but have you considered finding something else that you enjoy more? Or another workplace?

Depending on why you aren't enjoying your role?

coffeewithmilk · 11/07/2020 15:11

I work as a nurse in a private company.
My 34.5 hour week is split into 3x12 hour shifts. But generally they aren't 12 hours - it could be 13-15 hours a shift and finishing very late at night - sometimes even midnight or 1am.

I would absolutely love to drop down to 2 days a week (still waiting to hear what the new salary would be and if I could afford it)

It's almost a mental thing now where I'm worried going to work that I'm going to be there till midnight and be leaving late etc.

Thank you for everyone who replied - seems like a lot of different working schedules

Currently 16 hours over two days; soon will be 15 over three short days.

Easy work. Husband is well paid which enables me to work part time and be at home with our child.

Sarahplane · 12/07/2020 01:13

28 hours (4 days). I used to work 21 over 3 days which felt like a better work life balance. I'm thinking about reducing my hours again.

JStarlight · 12/07/2020 20:58

@Darkestseasonofall @nowaitaminute
If you don’t mind me asking what job do you both do? I would love to be able to have my same salary which is 1700 per month I bring home but to bring just less than that over 3 days would be amazing!!
Thanks so much

nowaitaminute · 13/07/2020 09:43

@JStarlight I'm a teacher...but not in U.K.

GreyGardens88 · 13/07/2020 09:47

It was 40 before I was made redundant, looking to reduce my hours back to a 35 hour 9 to 5 job

BarbedBloom · 14/07/2020 19:22

15 up until recently. I have a chronic condition though that includes fatigue so I just can't manage any more. When I worked 21 hours I found I came home and went to bed and that was it for the day - I had no life at all outside of work. I was in a very well paid position though and even part time I earned more than my husband who worked full time at the living wage, so it hasn't affected us as much as I thought.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 14/07/2020 19:29

21 hours over 5 days.

RoseyLentil · 22/07/2020 18:06

Contracted 40 percent but sometimes need to do more depending on projects. However currently on furlough so am volunteering 15 pw.

napody · 30/07/2020 19:19

Chienloup do you mind me asking what you do and what your qualification is? Teacher here.

Oly4 · 30/07/2020 19:21

40 but term time only mostly so I’m very happy with the balance

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 30/07/2020 19:23

@nowaitaminute

12.5 hours 1400 per month. I wouldn't go back full time for love nor money 😂
Its usually for moneyWink
m0therofdragons · 30/07/2020 19:24

37.5/week. I find it easier than when I did 30 hours. 30 wasn’t enough of a reduction to benefit from part time working and lunches with friends or time to do house work; it just meant I picked up the dc from school and ferried then places until tea time and bed. Now dh and I both work ft the dc and house is spread much more evenly. Dh has more to do but is happy to do so.
