How many hours a week do you work?

As the title says really

I'm currently on 34.5 hour week and feeling really guilty as I want to reduce my hours due to the stress of the job. It's beginning to make me unhappy even thinking about going into work.
I've emailed HR to find out what the reduction in salary would be.

How many hours do you work - and would/have you reduced hours? Has this made for a happier work/life balance?

30 hours so 4 days just perfect

lookatmememe · 09/07/2020 19:14

60 hours a week in summer less in winter ( gardener )

kitschplease · 09/07/2020 19:47

37.5, sometimes a bit more.

DramaAlpaca · 09/07/2020 19:48

36.5. I regularly used to work a lot more, but it was making me ill so now I stick to my contracted hours.

Pluckedpencil · 09/07/2020 19:50

40, with one day WFH which helps a lot with the commute.

MaverickDanger · 09/07/2020 19:54

Contracted for 37.5 hours, but often work 45+.

No overtime or TOIL.

I am wanting to go down to 4 days pw, depending on my maternity cover. I wouldn’t be able to do that with the current team size and workload.

Oblomov20 · 09/07/2020 19:58

Only worked 3 or 4 short days for the last 15 years. Even though ds's are now older I have no intention of changing that.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/07/2020 19:59

32.5 on a 9 day fortnight. Full time would be 35. You can work it out roughly yourself but obvs more complicated if you would be moving tax bands.

So for me, I work out roughly what % I take home from my gross, so take home divided by gross and multiplied by 100 - so get something like 75%.

Divide your annual salary by whatever your current contracted hours are and then multiply by how many hours you want to do. That will give you your new annual gross. Divide by 12 and then multiply by the % you got in your first calculation and that will you roughly your new take home.

Or there are various on'line calculators that will work it out from your Gross annual salary.

I don't regret it, i started reduced hours when DC started pre school nursery so I could pick them and then I changed to compressed when they finished high school, and currently think if I can reduce a little more and do a 4 day week without making the days too long.

blackcat86 · 09/07/2020 20:00

22.5 over 3 days. I was FT before mat leave and returned 3 days pw. Partly because GPs offered childcare between them and partly because I had a very clingy high needs baby who had some physical issues so I wanted to still be able to do some groups with her and be at appointments etc. Its been a good compromise but I've got a bit bored and unchallenged work wise so I've started a small business that I can do evenings/weekends and make a higher income in a shorter amount of time.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/07/2020 20:01

Sorry mine is 32.5 per week on a 9 day fortnight, so 65 every two weeks.

Temple29 · 09/07/2020 20:04

37 hours a week. Currently pregnant with DS2 and dropping to 22.5 hours after maternity leave. I think it will give me a nice balance and the opportunity to be more involved at home.

Paddingtonthebear · 09/07/2020 20:05

Furloughed since March but normally work 25 hours over 5 days

Chasingsquirrels · 09/07/2020 20:06

24 over 4 days.
Kids now 17 & 14 and I have no intention of increasing.

Moonshinemisses · 09/07/2020 20:06

At the moment I'm averaging 60hrs a week, since the end of March. Before that my usual was around 45hrs a week.

teenagetantrums · 09/07/2020 20:06

Contract is 35 hours a week. But probably about average of 40 hours sometimes more. I get paid by hour so am happy to do more

Heyhih3 · 09/07/2020 20:07

25 hours over 2 days. Reduced my hours massively once I had DC as my priorities changed.

isntthatnice · 09/07/2020 20:08

Before lockdown it was between 45-55 hours per week.

Now I refuse to do 36. If they sack me they sack me. I can't do those hours anymore and I'm in hospitality on my feet all shift,

isntthatnice · 09/07/2020 20:10

Sorry I forgot to say I refuse to do more that 36 hours.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 09/07/2020 20:11

Contractually 40 I think. It's usually 50 around month end (finance) and it's been more than that while working from home as everything seems to take longer.

trilbydoll · 09/07/2020 20:13

28 hours over 4 days. Wfh with kids around I think I'm doing closer to 36 but it's all horribly inefficient.

alwaystired234 · 09/07/2020 20:20

I work 6 hours a week and I hate it, the job I have need constant updating and I miss most things. My husband works about 50 hours mon-fri sometimes Saturday and I work sundays. We currently have two children under 4 and will hoping to be doing 3 days a week 20 hours when my youngest is in nursery and eldest is in school

TheGriffle · 09/07/2020 20:21

18.5 which is full days Mon & Tue and half day on Wednesday. I’ve done this for the last 7 years since eldest dd was born. Dreading when dd2 goes to school as I might have to go full time. 😫

Brieminewine · 09/07/2020 20:25

24hrs over two days. I reduced from 37.5 after mat leave and only noticed a few hundred pounds difference so well worth it!

BackforGood · 09/07/2020 20:49

Yes, I reduced my hours over 2 decades ago, when I had d2c2.
Yes, if made me FAR happier.
Yes, it was overwhelmingly a great decision.
However, I reduced my hours to^ 36 hrs a week (from about 55 - 60

greytminds · 09/07/2020 20:54

Officially 30 - before lockdown it probably ended up being 35-40 most weeks. During lockdown I struggle sometimes to do the hours due to childcare. Probably evens out over a few weeks though so overall doing what I should. It feels like not enough, as a senior business leader I can’t help but feel that I should be more available and flexible but I have a toddler and it just isn’t possible.
