We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

It only gets worse Vintage. Believe me. There is no going back.

VintageTeacup · 18/03/2018 21:05

Oh my poor knitting needles are being neglected. Well it's their own fault really for not being as speedy. Going to stick to 6 inches as my 12s are a bit too full of character.

bookbook · 18/03/2018 21:06

Join the clan Vintage - lovely squares !
I can start joining ours ( mine and DD's) tomorrow !!

Jux · 18/03/2018 23:05

Yay Vintage!! Go go go!

MadisonAvenue · 19/03/2018 13:44

Excellent Vintage

I'm in awe of the rowers!

Rubytuesday2980 · 20/03/2018 16:50

Hi Woolly Hugs people! Inspired by some friends who hosted one of the Chernobyl families last year, I vowed that this years project would be my incentive to learn to crochet... ...unfortunately I forgot until two weeks ago, but now have 4 squares on the go (and have done a side project of a blanket for DS's teddy) Slightly addicted already, but please can somebody help with what to do with the loose ends at the beginning and when I change colour? Worth pointing out that I don't understand any of the terminology yet... Thanks in advance Smile

p.s how do I get the address for posting?

TwitterQueen1 · 20/03/2018 17:01

Hello Ruby
Welcome to the club. I'm a newbie myself.

Get the address by PM KnottyandPistey (go to the top of the thread and click on 'message poster'.

Darn the ends (aka peskies) into the square with a darning needle. Take a look at bella coco on Youtube for a demo!

TwitterQueen1 · 20/03/2018 17:03

sorry, that wasn't as clear as it should have been
PM = private message. When you click on 'message poster' and email box will pop up and you can ask them for the address.

The video tutorial on what to do with your ends is

bookbook · 22/03/2018 08:52

Morning - how is everyone?
Ruby - good going - peskies are a nuisance, but I make an effort to do each square as I go along , rather than do a big pile at the end. Twiiter has it , but a good long knotted off end, then threaded through securely , and as a constructor, preferably not right along the edge!
I am plodding on doing squares for a second blanket - first one is done , and going in the post today :)

MrsHathaway · 22/03/2018 10:10

As another constructor, I'd add:

  • please make sure your pesky changes direction - if you just tuck it in in one direction it tends to slip out. If you sew it in one way for a bit, catch it on a stitch, then double back on yourself, it's more secure.

  • please do long enough peskies so that if they do come loose it's easy for the constructor to rehide.

Constructors do like a few one-colour squares when working out how to put a blanket together as it's helpful for balance and so on, so don't feel every square has to be full of colour changes. One-colour squares have far fewer peskies too!

Photo MrsH!!!!

MrsHathaway · 22/03/2018 15:58

Voilà!

It's the striped c2c with all the colour changes. You'll see most of the others are single colour or limited palette to be useful background. I've been playing with texture so there's lots of cable/waffle etc. There's even an experiment in cable-in-the-round which worked but probably needs to be 12". book will recognise the spiked granny, a new favourite of mine.

It's been a productive week (I was off work poorly on Monday so piled through). These are a batch of Spiced for Kinship.

bookbook · 22/03/2018 16:27

Lovely MrsH - and yes, I do recognise the spiked granny! Its a lovely wave of colour on there :)
They have such a lovely squishy texture .
I must admit to doing what you did a while ago - trotted off to the PO to post my blanket - I had put a few extra bits in it . Got there - 2.1kg - I had weighed it at home , but obviously not very well. I had to come home and disembowel it and then take it back ....

MrsHathaway · 22/03/2018 17:15

Ugh parcel fail is so annoying!!

DropZoneOne · 22/03/2018 17:21

Wow, fab looking squares Mrs H

book a second blanket? goodness me!

I've just finished square 17 - 3 more to go.

bookbook · 22/03/2018 17:28

Drop - 17 by yourself - wow !- I should explain - it's not just me - DD is doing her bit. She did more for #1 - as she got going during her holidays at Christmas , but I've done the joining . I'm now getting most of the next lot done, as she is busy busy at work :)

MrsHathaway · 22/03/2018 17:48

17 - gosh!

DropZoneOne · 22/03/2018 18:56

They are simple squares, but using a selection of 4 colours so they work together. Each one takes me about 2 hours so I manage a couple during the week after work and then binge at the weekend!

It's the joining that worries me, that's a new skill to learn Confused

Woolly Hugs. Chernobyl 2018 is HERE!!!
MrsHathaway · 22/03/2018 19:05

Joining is easier than you'd think. Joining squares which are all basically the same is even easier. Give us a shout when you get there if you'd like walking through it.

bookbook · 22/03/2018 19:10

lovely Drop - it really isn't too bad as MrsH says - especially if you are doing your own .
On how many( I and DD ) have done - nowhere near as well as Mhw - who was saying she was slow only having got 1 and a half blankets done this year Shock

TwitterQueen1 · 22/03/2018 19:56

Here are my squares - ignore the yellow one, that's a placeholder! I have one more left to do and I think I'm going to do 4 small ones...

Construction crew - hope these are all OK.

Wow - they are great TQ!

Spindelina · 22/03/2018 21:08

MrsH have you done any of the Polly Plum stardust melodies squares? They’re my new favourite set of textures.

DropZoneOne · 22/03/2018 22:43

Well done TQ, great job!
