We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

MrsH have you done any of the Polly Plum stardust melodies squares? They’re my new favourite set of textures.

I haven't, but I shall Google immediately! Thanks for the tip Flowers Brew

MrsHathaway · 23/03/2018 12:56

Oh boy. Oh boy oh boy!

RIP my weekend Grin

Jux · 23/03/2018 18:41

Oh aren't they all lovely! Well done TQ, DZ, and MrsH that's fab with all the colours, and I love your textures too.

TwitterQueen1 · 23/03/2018 18:51

Thank you jux and Drop.

I've been faffing around with waffle stitch, which is really frustrating trying to get it to 6" and I've had to undo several and start again. And my African flower didn't go terribly well when I tried to make it into a 6" granny so I have 'wasted' time today.

Just seen on FB that you've extended the deadline to 16th April K&P. I will send my first 20 squares & 4 beanies early next week, but if you're running short I can plan to do another 'normal' few squares over the holiday? ie no faffing. Assuming consultant appt on Monday doesn't throw a spanner in the works like the last one did....

MrsHathaway · 23/03/2018 19:06

TQ - when I waffle I aim comfortably under then ring in dc/htrc/trc as needed to get up to 6". I never quite know how big it will turn out

TwitterQueen1 · 23/03/2018 19:08

sorry MrsH PMSL at 'emotional hooker' Grin

MrsHathaway · 23/03/2018 19:12

WinkSmileGrin

It's why I try to do squares all in one go. The tension varies so much depending on my mood Blush

It's also why I was utterly hopeless at knitting.

Okki · 23/03/2018 20:48

I am so behind on messages- been constructing and trawling Ravelry and PInterest for ideas. Though seeing MrsH's squares and Spin's Polly Plum suggestion, I may be trawling more. Grin. Though have to say thanks to MrsH for the explanation on my wildly differing tension. Am totally an emotional hooker.

TQ - I started a year ago and you are WAY ahead of me with being adventurous with stitches and patterns. Love your squares and the blanket they add up to. Fingers crossed for Monday.

So many beautiful and inspiring squares and blankets.

Mhw02 · 24/03/2018 14:07

Just posted two parcels of extras. Had to send it in two boxes rather than one as it was £12 cheaper to send separately! Haven't put a note in, but should be obvious what they're for!

Blanket to follow.

MrsHathaway · 24/03/2018 22:38

First 11 rounds of this pattern plus squaring off. Surprisingly easy.

bookbook · 24/03/2018 22:52

that is beautiful MrsH . (I'm jealous too - I am plodding on with solid grannies atm , as they are going to (hopefully!) have embellishments on this next lot )
Mhw - I know, its weird with the PO pricing - the cost of under 2kg = £2.90 and over 2kg =£12.98 Shock

MrsHathaway · 24/03/2018 23:16

Yes, is it something like once it's >2kg it's Parcelforce?

There's also something weird about RM not charging VAT and PF having to which I think is about £2 of the difference.

Good night all x

TwitterQueen1 · 24/03/2018 23:26

That is stunning MrsH!

Went to the wool shop and bought cream, khaki, mushroom and buttermilk - none of which are included in the required palette. Doh.
Another trip for me tomorrow....

TwitterQueen1 · 24/03/2018 23:27

sorry, that formatting is rubbish.

bookbook · 25/03/2018 08:56

TQ -I am going to go and ask about that - when I took it in, I asked what the next cheapest price was , and was told £12.98 . If it should have been £5 I'm going to complain - I would happily have sent it at that ..

DropZoneOne · 25/03/2018 10:03

book you can only send a small parcel under 2kg. Over 2kg it switches to medium parcel pricing and does jump considerably. Through Royal Mail it's around £15, the Parcel force option at around £12 Is cheaper.

MyHermes is a much cheaper option for heavy parcels.

Jux · 25/03/2018 12:08

Small warning: I just sent off a few squares, maybe 4, but I packed them badly in the envelope so no matter how hard the poor RM woman tried, she couldn't get them through the large letter slot, so they had to go under small parcel.

Pack as flatly as you can!

bookbook · 25/03/2018 13:17

Rubbish isn't it Jux
because I was a book seller for many years, and sent out lots of books, I have one of these , but its all daft , the pricing !

Hello, did someone mention that the last posting date has been extended? I haven't been in the thread yet this year but made a couple of squares for last year, saw this year's original post and made a mental note to get started, but got distracted by another project (yet another Attic24 blanket), probably because the deadline seemed a long way away (well, back then it did). If the deadline has been extended I should be able to get some more squares done.

Does anyone else find with squares that they take a lot of concentration (or is it just me)? With stripey blankets, once I've got the hang of the pattern repeats, I can just get on with it, but with squares I feel I have to keep checking the pattern, re-counting, checking that I'm on the correct row number, etc. With stripes, I can watch telly at the same time (and mostly follow what is going on), but with squares, I seem to find it much harder. I suppose I could do stripey squares, but I think I feel that I should try something different (plus stripes equals lots of peskies in a smaller area).

bookbook · 25/03/2018 14:56

hi Thursday - deadline has been extended to 16th April . I'm definitely a square maker - the ones in rows tend to end up with wiggly edges with me Blush . Simple grannies are easy , and I am doing spiked grannies now thanks to MrsH :)

ThursdayNextIsMyHero · 25/03/2018 17:16

Thanks bookbook, I haven't heard of spiked grannies before. I'll have a look...

MrsJonesAndMe · 25/03/2018 21:19

I've now got 8 done and 1 hat. Will be posting Tuesday morning, so may be 9 by then. I'm sticking to solid grannies for now.

I will aim to send whatever else I can get done by the 16th.

KnottyAndPistey · 27/03/2018 17:07
