We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

The auction blanket is at £150!

And the person I know who was keen has yet to make an appearance, so who knows!

YYY 7th was excellent, it puts them right in the elite mix, mind you they have all rowed for their country so they should be good! The senior GB eight appearing as Leander won, there were 320+ crews! They will be back for Henley. Have just about finished washing bedding, yet to put away mind! Here they are, DD is one of these!

Sale starts this morn, there will be NO SENSE from us until after and even then, poss not Gin

MrsH - you have just reminded me of spiked grannies - they are nice aren't they - only done a couple - will now go and search waffle in the round!
Gosh your is DD is a star rower? the dedication to training looks immense . Does anyone ever finish washing bedding, even when you don't have guests ? Grin

I've just put a big woolly parcel in the post, with all the woolly hug squares that were meant to be posted at the weekend Blush, plus five Chernobyl squares. I feel quite organised - I think I only managed two last year.

Meanwhile knitting progress is slowly getting there - managed a whole square of garter stitch and now onto stocking stitch. I think someone mentioned a Jan Eaton knitted squares book - worth investing my £10 Amazon voucher in a copy?

MrsHathaway · 15/03/2018 18:06

book If you already know how to granny and normal waffle, you can waffle in the round. You work a round at the front then a round at the back.

  1. Ch4 and join.
  1. Ch3 and trc into ring; /ch2 2 trc/ three times; ch2 and join to top of ch3. Turn.
  1. Ch5 trc into ch2 space (first corner worked); /trc into trc twice; trc ch3 trc into ch3 space/ three times; trc into trc twice then join to top of ch3. Turn.
  1. Ch3 trc ch3 2trc into ch2 space (first corner worked); /fptrc into trc, trc into next two trc, fptrc into trc, 2trc ch3 2trc into ch3 space/ three times; fptrc into trc, trc into next two trc, fptrc into trc, join to top of ch3. Turn.
  1. Ch5 trc into ch2 space (first corner worked); /trc into next two trc, %bptrc into trc, trc into next two trc% trc ch3 trc into ch3 space/ three times; fptrc into trc, trc into next two trc, fptrc into trc, join to top of ch3. Turn.

The fptrc creates the ridges going out from the centre. The perpendicular ridges are created in straight trc by turning.

On one round you add one to each side of each corner, and create the ridge with bptrc. The next round you come back creating the ridge with fptrc and add two to each side of each corner.

Just checking in to say I have 6 squares to post and working on a hat. The blankets are fab!

TwitterQueen1 · 16/03/2018 09:32

I've puffed, popcorned and clustered and am now going to learn to waffle! Accumulating an increasing number of squares, which I'm aiming to post next week.

What do you feed 10 rowers?!!!! My mind is boggling. One huge pan of chilli?

KnottyAndPistey · 16/03/2018 11:43

Yes, but TQ, what about your crochet?

I'm so SLOW this year. Currently only have half a blanket done. Think I'll need to zoom through it the first week of Easter!

Have some extras to send which I'll post next weekend.

Much snow here in Devon. Trains are still running through to Exeter,, but delayed a little. Cornwall is probably cut off again though. DH has had to cancel all his gigs this weekend as there's been no guarantee he'd be able to get back!

I have a chicken doused with lemon in the oven, and am fairly cosy. Am about to start watching Ghost Wars with dd. Anyone know what it's like, how scary it is? I hate being frightened!

KnottyAndPistey · 18/03/2018 17:08

More snow now. DH is supposed to be flying away for work. Fingers crossed.

Not watched that no. Just starting Stranger Things here with DS a Knotty recommendation!

These are so beautiful!

Ok, who's bright idea was it to explain this crochet malarkey clearly. I might have a slight addiction now, and for that I thank you Grin
