Welcome to our second thread supporting our Chernobyl project 2017, the end of the first one crept up on us!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from previous projects can be found here..

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston, Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! shock Gin

With your help we know we can do this

Gin Gin

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex.
  • No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Madison have you seen GD live? I went with my son a few years ago and they were brilliant - put on an excellent show. And have you heard Billy Joe's CD with Norah Jones - an Everley Brothers tribute?

IAmNotAUserNumber · 24/03/2017 08:28

Chipping these are a couple - turquoise and grass; and empire and lipstick. I don't have photos of the others yet as I'm away but will photo them when I return.

Morning!
right, after having read MrsH and c2c joining, I will pop a border around mine -( good instruction tutorial 1) - I bodged a border around 4x6" ones in the last batch....Blush the construction crew are going to need all the help they can get !
I actually like the 12' c2c , but know what you mean about awkward hooking WhoKnows -. As I crotchet as I knit, I fold the work and keep it tucked under my left hand, as I am only using my left hand to hold the work steady, but when I near the top/end of the row the hook can get caught in the work .
Madison - ulterior motive indeed !
Chipping hahaha! - I may buy gold as it looks really nice on Vittys , and I have spice and meadow. Am at the shops tomorrow, as long as they have it , and I can smuggle it in - DH is despairing.

bookbook · 24/03/2017 08:31

lovely IAm - as I saw MrsH saying they need plain, I think I am going to concentrate on those now for the last hurtle to the line....less peskies too!

TheoriginalLEM · 24/03/2017 08:33

you have to do borders on c2c? Shock

IAmNotAUserNumber · 24/03/2017 08:34

The first one is saffron, spice, tomato, lipstick and empire - I was trying to recreate a flame Hmm
The second is boysenberry and lime.

And finally, lime, boysenberry and fuscia.
All the above have been sent already for Chernobyl or Candy - I have another 5 Chernobyls at home and when I've done one more will send them all off - I'll have done 10 Chernobyl squares so half a blanket.

Morning Brew I really enjoyed the craft sale yesterday, looking forward to more later.

Beautiful squares IAmNotAUserNumber

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 24/03/2017 09:11

Love those colours, User!!!

Beautiful squares.

Spindelina · 24/03/2017 09:55

I've run out of Wool Warehouse organza bags. I've got one big one for my Stylecraft wool and one for my wool for another completely neglected project (making a blanket for DD as a special "moving into her big girl's bed" present - we need the cotbed back for my bump...). Then I've got a little one for my might-be-useful ends of wool from when I unwind bobbins, and one for each of my on-the-go squares, which is where the problem (which you will all understand) lies!

I have my knitting (which is requiring concentration, so needs the right moment) and a Chernobyl square (which is in three colours, so not very portable), so I had to start a third Zlad/lass square for doing on the go which has nowhere to go! .

So, clearly, I need more wool. And actually, I need stitch markers and double pointed needles.

Okkitokkiunga · 24/03/2017 10:45

Morning All. Thanks all for suggestions of where to get wool and tutorials to watch. I am actually sulking at the moment as my wool STILL hasn't arrived. Our local craft shop only stocks tapestry wool so I think I am going to have to do a mad search for a shop somewhere in the East Midlands so I can start.

I spent ages on Wool Warehouse and Deramores last night being very tempted to buy more colours. Best learn first though Grin

bookbook · 24/03/2017 11:14

are you any where near a Boyes? - I know they have shops in East Midlands - they stock Stylecraft at £1.95 , but a limited range of colours .

TheWoollybacksWife · 24/03/2017 12:15

Whereabouts in the East Midlands? I'm Northamptonshire and can recommend somewhere if you are anywhere near me.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 24/03/2017 13:16

That's a great C2C edge MrsH, I have been doing a plain row of DC round mine but it's easy to do too many or few by mistake. For the joining, I've found it's not so much that it's harder joining irregular edges, but it is easier to keep the join neat and straight, if the joining yarn is a contrasting colour to a square any unevenness shows.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 24/03/2017 13:16

Malcolm...and it would be daft not to get free postage...

🤣

Thank you for the link to Attic24, I didn't think to check her website, I was just obsessively checking the places I order from. They seem to be nicer colours than I imagined, though with my screen it's hard to say. I've just called Woolwarehouse, none in until early next month & no pre orders. Sigh. I hope Knotty makes another 'set' for the Kinship Hugs that includes these three. I mean, she's got nothing else to do.

😳🤣😊

WhoKnows. Yes and no. I'm bloody crack handed, so yes it's awkward...but no more so than anything else 😖😂. I don't feel like I stitch it at an angle?! Also the edge on my CTC is really even and firm, very odd. I'd so love to see other people's squares as it's hard to know what's 'normal'?!

Vitty. How did your lesson go?

MrsH. Oh, I see what you mean about it. I was imagining doing it as part of the original crocheting, I still have a knitting brain! D'uh! 🙄

I would have thought that it would be too stretchy with just the (sc, ch2) ?

I'm happy to put borders on if the Hookers want them.

IAmNot. Thank you 😊 I LOVE Turquoise & Grass together, I'm doing one of my spirals in those. The Empire & Lipstick looks good too & the B&L. The flame is great! Inspired. And I love the Lime, Fushia & Boysenberry! I might steal that combo. Honestly, I'm so crap at choosing colours.

bookbook I need your stamina to do some 12" CTC.'s I'm just BORED by the time it's 6" & can't wait to finish it! Maybe I'll make them 5" instead & hook 4 together. Just tell DH it's not cluttering up the house as you send it on & it's a relatively cheap hobby! £1.79 for a few hours! 😊 You've done/are doing really well with so many knitted squares!

Spindelina. I'd describe the situation here, but it's even worse 😖 We just need to order more wool. Simple. 😊😊. I'm ordering some stitch markers - I love these colours.

I'm taking note of all of these colour combinations, I'm useless at putting shades together. Lime with the boysenberry and fuschia is particularly lovely!

How frustrating Okki I hope you get your hands on some wool very soon!

IAmNot I've seen them many times over the years, from stadiums to small venue 'secret' shows. Absolutely amazing live and I'm so upset that things have conspired so that I've not been able to see them this tour, especially as friends are posting about how good the shows are on Facebook. I took myself off to New York a few years ago when Billie Joe was appearing in the American Idiot stage show on Broadway and met him outside the theatre

Okkitokkiunga · 24/03/2017 13:51

I think we can safely say I shall be no competition for Treasures in doing 20 squares in her first week Grin

I need to practise getting tension before even picking up a hook and trying to crochet. This could be a loooooooon process. When are the 2018 Chernobyl squares due Grin

MadisonAvenue · 24/03/2017 14:12

The most difficult thing I found was how to hold the wool comfortably and how to keep the tension on it. Even after a couple of months of crochet I struggle with that at times as it keeps slipping. Other times I just wind it around the fingers on my left hand and it's fine.

VittysCardigan · 24/03/2017 15:49

Chipping- My lesson went well but we didn't have time to do the mock test as he wanted to run through all the manoeuvres first. Today I have done parking (parallel & bay), emergency stop (entertaining as on the first one I used the clutch rather than the brake GrinGrin), reversing around a corner, hill starts, and everything in between!

Mock test next week

DoubleR · 24/03/2017 16:12

Good luck with your driving Vitty I learned when I was on maternity leave with DD a few years ago. I had the worst drive during my test, mounted the pavement, a wasp flew into the car ( I screamed Blush) , I pulled across a three lane carriageway without looking, and I still passed! The examiner must have just been in an amazing mood.

VittysCardigan · 24/03/2017 16:16

Thanks Double - fingers crossed I get the same one Grin

bookbook · 24/03/2017 16:32

Afternoon all :)
Vitty - hope all goes well, I am so old I have been driving for over 40 years , but I still remember the day I passed my test _ I was told they didn't test for hill starts any more, but the tester made me do and emergency stop on a steep hill instead....
Been somewhat busy with plants and gardening, but was in to accept my wool delivery I have to stand corrected - being somewhat in denial of wool buying, I actually ended up with 14 balls of wool this week - 7 balls in delivery 1 , and 7 balls in delivery 2 Blush .
What I did find time for was to try adding that border around the c2c in magenta this morning. I think it makes it look very neat and 'finished' but it did push it ever so slightly over the 12", so will have to adjust that..

Hi all!

I have a fair amount of wool left over from Candy's Hugs on the other thread. Can I use it for Chernobyl? (I've also got a little bit left from the Zsquares.)
