We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

llangennith · 06/02/2017 19:42

Mine are a bit boring but I figure they'll make the prettier ones stand out Grin

glenthebattleostrich · 06/02/2017 20:45

Some fab squares on here.

I'm having a break from making candy squares to make a blanket for my aunt who moves to a supported living place soon and is struggling. I'm doing a willow pattern from the Jan easton book in candy colours so kind of my own private hug if that's ok.

I'll crack on with more when it's done.

TheoriginalLEM · 06/02/2017 20:46

Fairy i really like those! i lost patience and frogged mine. Started a in the round square instead. Still it wasworth doing as i liked the pattern and may ise it for dd's scarf.

VittysCardigan · 06/02/2017 21:00

Glen. No, it's not ok. Sorry. No personal knitting allowed. At all.

The only way you're allowed back is if you post a photo of your blanket.

😬

Sorry to hear about your Aunt 😢. I hope she settles in ok once she's actually there. I'm sure your 'Hug' will help.

You've given me the shove I need to get started myself! I'm going to knit a blanket for my Mum, she gets really lonely. She lives overseas & I think she'd love it, but I'm going to go with a Cashmerino type wool I think, in white/grey. Though I might do her a Stylecraft one too that's a bit more washable etc.

All I need now is a bare minimum of 72 hours in a day! 😖😁

Bearfrills. Good score!

Baggy. I know, £2.10 is a bit expensive, but they're in a nearby market town that used to be lovely, but is dying the death because of the Internet & the council charges on retail space. I'm fine with paying a bit more to support them. I'm as guilty as everyone else of buying too much online & then complaining the shops are going to the dogs! But I hate it even more so when it's stuff like wool that I like to see/feel before I buy.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/02/2017 21:22

Vitty. It really is FAB!

I love the colour combination. Some people are really good at it, I'm envious, I'm a bit pants!

Is that Shrimp next to the Violet?

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/02/2017 21:24

That's a lot of nipples Norman 😬

Fab squares. Are you able to relink the blog that MrsH gave you? Please :)

NorksAreMessy · 06/02/2017 21:30

G'd'evening all.

NoviceKnitterNorks here with some more damfool questions....

When I did just knit in one direction and knit in the other, I needed 120 rows
When I did knit one way and purl the other, I only needed 84 rows and finished much quicker
Is that like magic or summat?

Secondly, would the constructioneers prefer knit-knit squares because they are stretchier and look nearly the same front and back
OR are they OK with knit-purl square, even though the back doesn't look very nice compared to the front, and the edges curl up.

TL:DR in future, do I do knit-purl squares or knit-knit squares?

Sorry, I am VERY new to this :)

NormansNipple · 06/02/2017 21:37

Vitty that looks awesome! Lovely colour combinations.

Norks stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl) grows much quicker than just knit rows. It is indeed magic Grin

VittysCardigan · 06/02/2017 21:39

Chipping- Thank you! I literally just grabbed whatever was next from my stash, that's the beauty of being given this colour scheme! No thinking required (am also crap with colour matching)

It is spice next to the violet, then tomato, then lipstick- works really well even with no planning Smile

NormansNipple · 06/02/2017 21:39

chipping yes I've learnt to do bobbles - they do look like nipples, especially in pink! I've just finished the baby bow square, lots of nipples on that Grin

This is the link. It helped me a lot with counting stitches. Hope it helps you too.

NorksAreMessy · 06/02/2017 21:40

Oooo, it is called stocking stitch...like stockings?

NormansNipple · 06/02/2017 21:50

I assume that's where it came from....it's quite stretchy isn't it. There are so many knitting stitches you can try. Lacy ones - holes are easy to do, and cables look nice on blanket squares. I'm just hooked on hooking now. I haven't touched my knitting for weeks!

NorksAreMessy · 06/02/2017 22:37

OK, you are scaring me now. I am still quite pleased to manage two different stitches. It might take a while before I move on to anything fancy Blush

Ruhrpott · 06/02/2017 23:07

I did the heart pattern and am finally learning to crotchet (met up with a fellow Wooly hugger and she taught me tonight)

Ruhrpott · 06/02/2017 23:09

I love the heart squares. They are so easy just knit and purl. I'm going to make one in all my colours.

2017SoFarSoGood · 06/02/2017 23:29

Ruhrpott the heart squares are beautiful. Woud you share your pattern please?

Wow. Such talent on this thread. I am inspired!

NormansNipple · 06/02/2017 23:31

Norks that's the best thing about knitting. If you can knit and purl you can do anything!

Ruhrpott they are lovely squares.

steppemum · 06/02/2017 23:44

Mrs H - have you knitted up the patterns you linked to before (using just knit and purl, the heart, lips etc?)

I have asked a question about them on the Chernobyl thread and was wondering if you could pop over and answer it Smile
Thanks

Ruhrpott · 06/02/2017 23:48

The pattern was the heart one from here

Ruhrpott · 06/02/2017 23:52

I fancy doing the owl one too but need to brush up on how to do cable stiches

MountainDweller · 07/02/2017 00:03

I would like to join in please! Have been a lurker on Candy's threads; so sad that she is no longer with us. But very excited to contribute to this legacy!

I'm a fairly basic knitter and have ordered wool in my favourite colours from the list (reds, pinks and purples). Will have to wait impatiently for a while as I'm in Forrin.

I didn't know that stocking stitch grows faster! I'll be going for that then! I'm a lefty so all my squares will be backwards Grin Might attempt the heart pattern or some stripes. Might even try to learn crochet again! Tried before and failed, probably because my friend was trying to teach me with really fine thread and a piddling tiny hook!

Do I need to PM for sending address?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/02/2017 07:30

norks I am a knitter to, sometimes I just do garters stitch but others I do a pattern for, I will try and look at a link for patterns but I think if y Google 6 inch knit and purl squares you should find some different ideas
