We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Jux this is the pattern. It makes up so quickly, probably because it's so lacey

loving everyones squares! book i love your knitted squares so much! i can imagine someone sitting with a blanket looking at every square, plain textured or coloured and picturing the process if it being made. Lets be honest, it is an absolute pleasure and i know i get so much out of this its nrver a chore although the pesky ends are building up and THAT may be

WitchDancer · 21/02/2017 10:03

One advantage of single coloured knitted squares - only 2 ends to pesky!

Yiayoula · 21/02/2017 10:10

A tribute to the Z -cats ( looks more feline if you narrow your eyes and sort of squint at it !! ). Going for some textured squares in plain colours next, some lovely ideas on this thread . Brew first, then get the needles out x

Good point, Witch !!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 21/02/2017 11:11

Ahhh lovely Yiayoula

I've spent the last two days struggling with one square (Jan Eaton Number 89 - Spinner) mainly from my own arrogance by speeding ahead and not reading the pattern correctly. There was a lot of frogging and even more swearing Wink Perversely, I think I find the more intricate patterns easier because I actually concentrate and read it properly

One day I will do a 6 inch square from that book and it will actually come out at 6 inches Grin

Jux · 21/02/2017 11:48

Yiayoula, I was looking for crochet cat squares for Zcats, but the few I found were so hard I gave up. That's fab, that one.

Aroseforemily · 21/02/2017 12:34

I've posted my first lot today, all granny squares I'm afraid. The next lot will be different I've got a book of 200 patterns so plan to have a go at some of those.

Yiayoula · 21/02/2017 13:49

Raportina : Thank you ! I know what you mean about not concentrating : I was watching Call the Midwife and rattling away on a stocking stitch square that inexplicably became a scarf......

Jux : Thank you ! It was pretty straightforward to knit, but am very envious of all the crotcheteers , I never grasped how to do it and it looks so intricate. Are you going to do the lacey pattern from pterobore ?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 21/02/2017 14:10

Funny you should say that Yiayoula it did all start to go wrong during Call The Midwife Grin

Yiayoula · 21/02/2017 14:26

Grin ! Will not be knitting on Monday evenings when Broadchurch begins, need to keep my wits about me for David Tennant that...

TheHatOfDoom · 21/02/2017 15:10

Here are my completed squares. I like knitting them more but I'm more confident that the granny squares are the right size etc.
Anyway I have 7 Candy colours and I plan to do a knit one and a crochet one of each colour.

WitchDancer · 21/02/2017 15:32

They're lovely Hat. I'm doing a simple garter stitch today - I ask my boys to pick a pattern and a colour (I've got 10 Candy colours) so I never know what I'm going to end up doing.

I should be doing some stuff for the church fair sale but I'm too attracted to these!

Yiayoula · 21/02/2017 15:33

Lovely, Hat : especially the colour of the top right hand square. Cat has discovered a half- complete square whilst I was on the phone , so some serious unpicking going on now.

FurryLittleTwerp · 21/02/2017 16:22

I really like the bottom left granny square, Hat Smile

My cat particularly goes for knitting needles, rather than yarn - if I stick to crocheting she's not interested!

Yiayoula · 21/02/2017 16:30

Good tip ! - Will have to gave another bash at the crochet, maybe have a look at the video mentioned up thread. 😺

pterobore · 21/02/2017 16:45

Just a postage tip: I posted three blankets to woolly hugs today, over 2kgs, cost me £12! But if I'd split it into two parcels it could have gone as 2x £2.85 as small parcels. I'll be weighing mine in future!

diamantegal · 21/02/2017 18:24

A few more to add into the mix. Not quite so happy with these - I've been trying for a looser tension, which is making it a lot easier to work, but I think I've gone too far the other way as everything is a bit wobbly. More practice required!

MadisonAvenue · 21/02/2017 19:51

diamantegal I've done the cross one too, for Chernobyl. My first attempt at following a pattern rather than a video tutorial and I was quite surprised when it turned out as it should. I've finished a 12" square today which I'm not very impressed with but will still send it in the hope that the construction crew can work their magic.

book thank you, I've been using Bella Coco for the rounds so will give the waffle a go

Yiayoula I could never get the hang of knitting, would always happily be knitting away and then realise I'd dropped stitches a few rows back and have to attempt to undo it. I find crochet so much easier to correct mistakes on!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 21/02/2017 21:09

FMD

6, yes SIX, squares worth of Pesky Ends. When will I learn to do them as I go.

Answers on a Postcard.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 21/02/2017 21:12

Vitty 🤣 Umm, it does appear to have become a little calm!
