We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Uber found it - this one's for you! <a class="break-all" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20030204200812/members.aol.com/gandal195/carousel.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">web.archive.org/web/20030204200812/members.aol.com/gandal195/carousel.html

If the pic doesn't load it's the 6inch Carousel square from here allcrafts.net/crochet/crochetsquares.htm

HappyAxolotyl · 19/02/2017 13:18

Ah, thanks everyone. I see where I went wrong when sending the last lot off! It was an A4 envelope, but far too "fat" to count as one. So for the same price I could have sent loads. I know for next time.Smile

TheoriginalLEM · 19/02/2017 13:31

axolotyl that is wonderful what pattern us it?

HappyAxolotyl · 19/02/2017 13:43

LEM, the middle is called" Emmalynn" on Ravelry. It is a 12" square but came out smaller using dk, so that's why the outside is so plain; I had to make it up to 12"!

TheoriginalLEM · 19/02/2017 13:45

thanks- im such a loose hooker that I'll probably have to make it smaller Grin

HappyAxolotyl · 19/02/2017 13:56

It wasn't too difficult; I had never crocheted a square until just before Christmas.
Making Candy's squares has the added advantage of being able to learn new stitches. I'm hooked!

VittysCardigan · 19/02/2017 14:28

Axolotyl - I love that square

KnottyAndPistey - I love those blankets, a close up would be great, thank you.

I am voting as often as it will allow me.

I currently have 4 12" Chernobyl squares, 3 6" & 1 12" Candys and 2 little hugs - so glad I found Woolly Hugs

Jux · 19/02/2017 14:31

I think I must be holding my hook wrong as I don't get what the fuss is about the 'soft' handles of the Clover hooks. I hold mine like I hold a pencil and the handle is irrelevant, it just pokes out in the air?

Crochet Hooks - how do you hold yours???!!!!! (What was the advert that went a bit like that?) Grin

bookbook · 19/02/2017 14:42

I hold mine like a pencil too ( new to crotchet mind ) - The soft handle is just nicer to hold but I don't have any problems with an ordinary one either ! :)

Annahibiscuits · 19/02/2017 15:26

Can someone reassure me that it IS StyleCraft DK that I should be using

I have just read THIS on the www Woolly Hugs page;

Crafting information for our big Mumsnet Woolly Hugs
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook

The yarn we are using

Artesano Superwash Merino DK
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK
Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK
Patons Merino Extrafine DK
Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK

Spindelina · 19/02/2017 15:35

Anna I think those are the yarns that are used for the blankets for individual mners.

The candy's hugs colours are definitely stylecraft special dk - check the first post of this thread for the colours.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 19/02/2017 16:48

Oooh Axolotyl, that is gorgeous! I might have to go and have a nosey on Ravelry - I'm going to try and do some 12" squares for the Chernobyl project, but don't have any patterns.

I've got a fair few squares to send in, will pop them in the post tomorrow.

CraftyGirly90 · 19/02/2017 18:49

KnottyAndPistey I'm waiting on wool if you still have some available. I'm very low on the stuff I got last time x

AmethystRaven · 19/02/2017 19:17

Oh no Bear hope you're both doing OK. Brew Cake

LEM it always tickles me when you say you're a loose hooker Grin

More lovely pictures everyone, I love to see them. Mine are too boring on their own!

Today my Mum was saying she's thinking of taking up knitting as she wants something to do in the evenings. So of course I said 'I have just the project for you!! When I explained she thought it was lovely and said she would definitely try a square. I feel a yarn order coming on...

Get well soon, Bear.

These are my pending Candy's. Um, they're brighter in real life ... I used stash so no citrus colours available. Hoping they'll fit in with Pop's orange extravaganza.

I just send a batch when I'm done and I worry more about the packaging surviving Royal Mail than the cost - I don't think I've sent one over £2.85 since last Chernobyl when I was given an enormous quantity of clothing for the children so that parcel was hilariously large. Actually Construction must be over 1kg but I've not done many of those.

The DC have asked that I make them a blanket for the sofa. I'm looking at colours now. I shouldn't really feel guilty about being torn between WH and my own actual family Blush

glenthebattleostrich · 19/02/2017 21:00

Hello everyone, still on with my aunt's blanket, must pick an easier pattern next time! I may take a break this week to do some squares for Chernobyl then back to candy squares.

Love seeing all the fantastic patterns, you are some seriously talented hookers (and knitters)!

I think I may need some new colours from the range, slightly sick of the 4 I'm using now!

Spindelina · 19/02/2017 21:05

MrsH, here's one in citrus tones to help even things out! I decided that the darker colours didn't show up the green, so I went with spice. At about 8" through the knitting and onto my last side of the lace.

I'm loving all these beautiful crochet squares. I want to do them all! But then I remember that my next square will be my fourth, and maybe I ought to learn to walk before I run.

Evening!
That really works Spindelina - you were right, it looks amazing. Someone is going to be truly blessed having your square in their blanket.
I have done a couple of 6" today. Lime, and Meadow
Off to do a few for Chernobyl tomorrow.
It is so amazing how everyone is doing their bit. -Stylecraft must be wondering what has hit them! Grin

Annahibiscuits · 19/02/2017 21:50

What iS that spindalina??? That is too goddamn beautiful!! It's not crochet, is it?

TheHatOfDoom · 19/02/2017 22:01

Showed DM my squares and the yarn I have today. She has suggested magenta and tomato would make a nice stripy square. I like it in an out there way but would it be too much?

KnottyAndPistey finding the number of stitches to consistently make the right size is proving tricky. I have one finished square a smidgen over 6 inches and another slightly under but I thought I cast on the same number for both.

Have put the kniiting aside for crochet and a granny square in plum. I like it.

bookbook · 19/02/2017 22:12

Hah! TheHatofDoom - I use anything from 29-32 stitches. All depends on the pattern :) But the construction crew are brilliant at sorting out varying sizes. And nothing is too out there colourwise!

TheoriginalLEM · 19/02/2017 22:26

some really beautiful squares - i love looking at them. Here is my latest 12" I sort of made up the middle Square but then it started to go a bit skew so i returned to plain granny. I used ALL my colours and am loving the orange!

pterobore · 19/02/2017 22:50

I've been trying out a few different squares over the weekend to post back with the blanket I've finished joining. One is too big but I know whoever gets it to join will squeeze it in somehow!

TheHatOfDoom · 19/02/2017 22:56

That's good to know bookbook

I mostly make baby blankets and I don't follow a pattern just find a colour combo and/or stitch that I like and make it up. So needing to be aware of size etc is stretching me a bit. Which is good.
