We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Hi Kurius
Basic is very welcome indeed :)

PicardsCombOver · 14/02/2017 13:34

Thank you everyone for the advice on my hat. I tried another easy pattern and made. .. a hat :/
Kurius congrats on kicking off what will quickly become a serious addiction. If you're new to hooking you should check out Bella Coco, she has lovely tutorials on YT Grin

TheoriginalLEM · 14/02/2017 13:56

Yay Kurious - I have been doing wooly hugs since our Lovely Zombie and K&P started Candy's hugs. I think the subtitle for these threads should be hookers/knitters anonymous as it really is so addictive! Have just ordered another 11 balls of yarn, DP's face looked like this [yarn] when he saw the order pop up on his email, but sod it, it keeps me occupied in the evenings and it gives me a reason to do something I enjoy.

I made a lovely scarf for DD at the weekend which I would not have been able to attempt if I hadn't practiced the techniques on the squares. She has also "ordered" a blanket for when DP has made her new bed (so I wont have to make that for a while Grin).

Am making squares for cherobyl this week and finishing off my bits for CAndy's hugs.

Love these threads.

PicardsCombOver · 14/02/2017 14:30

LEM I almost choked on my coffee when I read upthread that you ordered more wool Grin I'm not jealous. (Roll on payday you bastard)

CraftyGirly90 · 14/02/2017 15:19

I'm dead jealous of you LEM even when I get paid on Friday I only might (emphasis on might) be able to afford to get more yarn. Wish I could get at least 2 of every colour xx

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 14/02/2017 15:50

I'm fast running out of my Candy's Hugs colours, and I've noticed that once you remove Lime: Saffron, Empire and Boysenberry are basically West Ham colours Grin

I'm going to have to bide my time until pay day (and use up some other colours) doing some refugee squares instead Smile

The big news is, I appear to have cracked doing basic rows Grin and now have two 6 x 6 (ish) plain squares. Progress indeed!

PicardsCombOver · 14/02/2017 15:57

Well done Raptor Brew Cake
I mastered rows and thought i could try a simple pattern ... I was wrong. See my hat from an earlier post lmao

MadisonAvenue · 14/02/2017 17:46

I could use some more donor wool but I think K&P are on holiday until after half term.

CraftyGirly90 · 14/02/2017 18:12

Madison that's probably a semi good thing, it'll give me time to finish off some other projects I've been working on x

WitchDancer · 14/02/2017 18:22

Bookbook - I would frog it back. I think to try and use a different colour would detract from the beautiful work/wool you've got

bookbook · 14/02/2017 19:30

Thank you Witch - you are very kind - I have knitted for 40 odd years , but I am a very newbie crotcheter , so had no real experience on wool useage on these patterns and squares :)

WitchDancer · 14/02/2017 20:38

I've never tried crotchet I must confess. You never know, one day I might give it a go but there's not enough hours in the day at the moment!

bookbook · 14/02/2017 22:23

I'm doing Bella Coco tutorials on youtube Witch . Thats not too bad, its reasonably straightforward, but I am still learning how to decipher the written patterns. Just a tweak odd to me. I can look at a knitting pattern and see what the pattern will look like, but not there yet with the crotchet ones.
I am only doing it as I have promised myself to get as many 12" squares for Chernobyl as I can. I have knitted one so far, but crotchet grows a bit quicker :)

PicardsCombOver · 14/02/2017 22:28

28 here and only some former acquaintances mock my crochet/knitting problem hobby.
Husband, mum, dad, aunt, uncle and DS are all very lovely about it (but admittedly haven't had to wear any 3 armed jumpers yet)

pterobore · 14/02/2017 22:28

I'm joining candy's hug blanket at the moment and I just wanted to pop on here and say what great work and beautiful colours, and a real sort of joy to join them together. I've gone for a rainbow effect with the squares I was sent.

diamantegal · 14/02/2017 22:40

I did my first square in the right wool! And then I measured it... 6 inches is a lot! How on earth do people manage 12? Guess I'll need to add some more trebles until I get to 6 inches (mainly because that's the only stitch I really know).

On the plus side diamantecat is enjoying the practice squares I did. Will alternate woolly hugs and this pattern which I'm thinking of making into a blanket for home - I think I already have someone who will use it!

CraftyGirly90 · 14/02/2017 22:51

Diamante everytime I get my squares out my cat tries to use them as a blanket as well. I ended up making one just for him so he'd stop bothering me and my Candy's Hugs squares x

DropZoneOne · 14/02/2017 22:54

What are people's favourite colours from vibrant riot? I only bought a few colours as I wasn't sure I'd be able to learn but I'm yearning for a bigger choice! I've got fuchsia, turquoise, magenta and empire.

WitchDancer · 14/02/2017 23:10

I would love to see the rainbow blanket PT.

On a different note, how do I make people's names bold on the phone ap?

diamantegal · 14/02/2017 23:12

I may have bought all the colours. I might have for away with it if DH hadn't been in when they arrived today. I've tried justifying it as needing to buy that much to get free postage but I don't think he's convinced.

My square above is Empire, Saffron and Kelly Green. I haven't unpacked the whole bag yet but I think generally I prefer either the very bright or the darker colours as a contrast. There at definitely some which seem a bit flat on their own - will need to work out the best combinations.

glorious · 14/02/2017 23:25

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. malcolm I've reserved that book at our library, thanks. I've used lots of Bella coco tutorials but didn't think of looking for squares there which was a bit silly. Just made her granny square heart which was nice and easy! I'm wondering about doing a square of block stitch as I've been meaning to try that for a while.

DropZoneOne · 14/02/2017 23:54

diamante that's a lovely pattern, what's it called?

I've just been doing traditional granny squares - they're quite "gappy" so I'm finding 6 rounds is about right, not quite 6" but another round would be too much.

HelenDenver · 14/02/2017 23:58

Lovely square diamante

OrangeIsTheNewPop · 15/02/2017 08:24

Good morning! Just catching up.

I aim to finish my baby blanket today, then get back onto The Zombie! I've given myself a three week deadline.

Marcipex · 15/02/2017 08:28

Morning Orangeisthenewpop!

Anyone else up yet? Brew
