We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Congratulations Bear! Lovely news xx

Malcolm - I've done the Peony Square for the first time this evening and I am very much a novice at this crochet business. Don't be put off by the 3 hook rating, once you can see how the petals build it's reasonably straightforward.

bookbook · 10/02/2017 22:35

Evening from hols!
Congratulations Bear - make the most of the rest Flowers
well, I finished my knitting, and went onto Bella Coco tutorials. Already done granny square and c2c , today have done circle to square and filled granny.
I had to buy more wool here to practise, so these will all go to the refugee project- hope they are okay, as the wool is not quite DK . I haven't totally got my tension right yet though, but it;s getting better :).

Vitty - I am going to see if I can bring mine home shortly, so will let you know. The knitting needles I brought had to be in the hold though, so not too hopeful :)

VittysCardigan · 10/02/2017 22:51

Thanks Book I'm thinking I might buy a plastic or bamboo hook and not worry if I have to lose it at security. It would be good to have it on the plane though as I find it very relaxing

flutterworc · 11/02/2017 00:38

D'oh! Wrong thread!

According to t'governm't, knitting and sewing needles are permitted on aeroplanes, so I can't see an issue with crochet hooks...

Thanks Flutter

Good to see you Pop!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 11/02/2017 08:12

Well one of my best friends has put me to shame...

"I've done a tiny bit of crochet for Candy's Hugs" she says...

Go girlie!

I'm going to do six more before I post. I hope that I'll be able to send it at the same time as one of my MN friends so our squares are woven in to the same blanket. Smile

Just wanting to check, it's been ages since I've knitted (literally years!) - the curly edges are okay, aren't they? Once stitched together with others I'm assuming they'll flatten out?

hey you popped back - good to see you x

MrsHathaway · 11/02/2017 09:09

Curly is fine, ProfAnnie.

Such lovely squares on a rather grey morning!

MadisonAvenue · 11/02/2017 09:14

Good morning all! It's white over here and still coming down so there's only one thing to be done isn't there Grin I do have to go out for coffee and cake this afternoon though. There's a tearoom in town which I keep walking past, has excellent reviews and I keep meaning to go in, and I really should as it's run by a charity which gave my sister a huge amount of help a few years ago.

I'm loving seeing all of the squares on here. I've got another few Candy ones done while waiting for Chernobyl wool.

Bear Congratulations Flowers Grin

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 11/02/2017 09:35

I actually own socks nearly identical to those

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 11/02/2017 10:22

Congratulations Bear hope you and the bear cub are doing well this morning Flowers

Norman that flower square wasn't too bad at all, I was quite surprised really, when you break it down it's pretty much just lots of triples Smile

LEM I have been known to dabble in witchcraft Grin

I really need to conquer crocheting in rows, I tried again earlier in the week but it just seems totally beyond me. Practise makes perfect (or at least slightly less crap) Wink

chickenowner · 11/02/2017 10:28

On my third square!!!

And such a huge thank you to whoever it was who send me a parcel of beautiful yarn to use.

Smile
SpiralArchitect · 11/02/2017 11:07

Congratulations Bear!

Pop Love your friend's "tiny bit of crochet" Grin

ProfAnnieT · 11/02/2017 11:28

Thanks for the reassurance MrsHathaway. So my repertoire is now square patterns as well as stripes... I checked out the Heart pattern linked to above, when I'm feeling a bit more confident I'd love to give that a go. Maybe work my way up to the owls and things!

OrangeIsTheNewPop · 11/02/2017 11:33

Prof I was useless for the first year of my crochet life...we all started somewhere. 😀

VittysCardigan · 11/02/2017 12:00

I am hooked on hooking - about to go out into the cold to buy wool to finish a little hug

steppemum · 11/02/2017 12:15

morning all.
I was in The Rane this morning and accidentally bought a crochet hook...

I am normally a knitter, but when I was turning out dd2s doll box yesterday I found a dolly blnaket crocheted by me when I was about 13, it is a loarge Granny square. Totally forgotten I had done it.
So, I will have another go. My 6" squares are all 6 1/2 or 7" so I am wondering if I can use them as a centre for a 12" by crocheting round them.

TheoriginalLEM · 11/02/2017 13:23

I think that the 61/2 inch squares will be ok?? not sure, but I think the construction crews are a whizz with squishing and stretching (heroes!). But yes a few people have been crocheting around the oversized squares to make 12" squares.

With the Jan Eaton books I have to reduce to 3.55mm hook but even with that I find the straight squares too big. So will stick to in the round.

Having a little break from woolly hugs as I am now doing a scarf for DD, it is coming together really quickly, really simple pattern so it will only be a short hiatus. I am probably going to buy some more Riot yarn, I can't resist!

I love love love seeing everyone's squares.
