We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Just found this square on Ravelry which would seem to be very suitable for Candy's in perhaps pomegranate or fuchsia?

MrsHathaway · 07/02/2017 19:18

MrsD - thinking logically, it doesn't matter, so long as you're consistent. If you're knitting and I'm sitting opposite you, it looks like you're purling. Then when you turn your work and purl, it looks to me like you're knitting.

TheWoollybacksWife · 07/02/2017 19:27

The only issue MrsD is that it might not come out at 6" square if you adapt a garter stitch pattern to stocking stitch. I think someone ^^ upthtread said that they needed fewer rows in stocking stitch than in garter stitch. So that could mean that your sizing is off.

My advice is "Go for it" - if it doesn't work out then you've taught yourself a new technique and if it does work out then you've knitted a beautiful square. I'd purl on the even rows btw as you aren't doing any shaping on them.

NormansNipple · 07/02/2017 19:44

Thanks Lana I'm looking now.

I don't want to derail the thread but a pattern for this voodoo doll/pin cushion popped up on favourites Grin

MrsHathaway · 07/02/2017 19:48

TheWoollybacksWife makes a good point. That's a decreasing pattern: an increasing pattern would be more flexible for sizing!

SpiralArchitect · 07/02/2017 19:53

Norman You will lose hours and hours of valuable crafting time while searching on Ravelry, you do know that? Grin

And as for Pinterest...

NormansNipple · 07/02/2017 19:54

I think you would end up with a long thin triangle if you adapt that to stocking stitch. Is the pattern meant to be made of 4 pieces sewn together? If so I don't think they would meet in the middle, there would be gaps.

NormansNipple · 07/02/2017 19:56

Spiral yes I can see that coming! There are so many beautiful patterns. Unfortunately most seem to be beyond my crocheting skills.

I've never been on pinterest. Sounds like I should keep it that way Grin

MrsDilligaf · 07/02/2017 20:05

Thanks for the tips. I did think it made more sense to purl on the even rows. I'm going to try and little square and see how it turns out!!

MrsDilligaf · 07/02/2017 20:20

Works fine doing the purl row on the even rows. I think I'll go for 60 rather than 65 stitches. Fingers crossed it looks good!!

TheWoollybacksWife · 07/02/2017 20:30

You'll need an odd number of stitches as you have a K1 in the middle and then two lots of stitches on either side of it IYSWIM

MrsDilligaf · 07/02/2017 21:23

Lol!! I twigged that as I was casting on! Very pleased with how it's looking so far.

Some lovely squares! 🙂

I popped into the wool shop yesterday to pick up the Fushia that finally arrived, the cheeky little blighter invited a few friends & a hooker back too! 😳

So, I now have the entire range of Candy Colours (aka Vibrant Riot). I'm not very good with not having 'sets' of things & I like to have 'options'. Sigh. Thankfully it's an ongoing project 🤣

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 08/02/2017 06:58

Oh my eyes. There are some things you just can't 'unsee'

...so I thought I'd share 😂

Thanks for that Chipping ConfusedConfused

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 08/02/2017 08:26

Oh my, ah, um...

How...interesting? I especially like the shoe/sock combo. I mean, socks as special as that deserve a more formal shoe, not just your average old trainer!

MrsDilligaf · 08/02/2017 08:34

Chipping some of us have a weak constitution y'know!

Just why?????

Coffeeandcrochet · 08/02/2017 08:38

Pop might like them - they're orange after all Grin

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 08/02/2017 10:06

🤣😂🤣

I haven't seen POP for a while 😕, she hasn't been on this thread. I was hoping the orange might attract her! I hope she's ok.

@popgoesthefuckingweasel

We miss you!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 08/02/2017 10:12

My first ever crochet square 😬

It has its imperfections, but it also has masses of Hugs! It even has orange POP 😁 I'll sort the pesky's this afternoon.

Awesome Chipping - love the colours.

I'm churning out Chernobyl squares at the moment but will be back on Candy squares after that deadline - just getting my vibrant riot fix from this thread Grin

SpiralArchitect · 08/02/2017 11:41

Chipping That looks far better than my first ever granny square!

I'm doing a Marigold square in rainbow colours at the moment for Chernobyl. I should get it finished today (if RL doesn't get in the way!) and get a pic up on the Chernobyl thread...

Tamsworth17 · 08/02/2017 18:57

chipping a fair sight indeed, though my first thought was "I wish I could knit socks like that". I think I have the knitting bug
