Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Anybody else dreaming about Woolly Hugs? Last night I approached random strangers in the street, and asked each one "Are you knitting for Woolly Hugs?" in a slightly accusing tone. At least I hope it was a dream Blush

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 26/01/2017 11:13

Seven 😂😂😂😂😂

I'm in a few different crochet groups on FB and every time someone is asking what to do with leftover yarns I tell them about WH and that they could make squares or hats or whatever.
I can't help myself.

PicardsCombOver · 26/01/2017 11:55

I've been practicing the waffle stitch with some non-Woolly Hug wool until my stylecraft arrives today. I may also have lost some weight from being too occupied to eat Shock happy hooking/knitting Flowers

Oops forgot a pic. Tada?

Ooh, Picards, that is going on my aspiration list, lovely texture.

Seven that's hilarious! I had a dream just over a week ago that I hit an intruder around the head with a cushion, and it turned out it was some woman delivering wool. Three days later I decided to learn to crochet so I could join in with this... seems my subconscious was a little ahead of me.

startingtheengine you sound like me!

I'm working on a granny square, it's a bit dodgy in the middle, but it's coming along.

PicardsCombOver · 26/01/2017 12:47

French I salute you, my granny square didn't turn out right so I put down that particular hook for a while Grin

fourquenelles · 26/01/2017 12:54

Afternoon all you lovely hookers and donators. KnottyandPistey would never be so forward as to suggest this but........

I have the crafting skills of a whelk ; I tried crocheting, even had lessons, and never got past the single stitch bracelet stage. But I wanted to do something so I set up a monthly direct debit of a few pennies to Woolly Hugs to help pay for the cost of materials.

Perhaps all the other whelks out there could consider doing something similar either as a regular thing or as a one off if not doing so already?"

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/01/2017 13:28

chipping I think pop may have gone on holiday

I have found somewhere to turn our wool into lovely dyed balls of wool, not sure how they will fit in with washing though

PurpleDaisies · 26/01/2017 13:47

Love the waffle picard. I did a schjeepes CAL last year (which I really must finish!) and that was one of the squares. It's a lovely stitch to do and the squares are so soft and squishy.

BigApple11 · 26/01/2017 14:02

Fourquenelles bless you!! X

TheoriginalLEM · 26/01/2017 14:02

Note to self! SEW IN THE ENDS AS YOU GO! !! seriously HmmBrew

On easy fundraising you can choose to nominate Woolly Hugs and then a few pennies are donated every time you buy from selected sites. It sounds complicated, but it is easy to do once you get sorted..you can put a little button in your computer that reminds you to do it.

That might help the whelks :)

TheoriginalLEM · 26/01/2017 14:31

Chipping I'm worried about POP too :( Does anyone know if she is ok, wasn't she going into hospital for something? Really hope she is ok, am also missing her Zombie blanket updates.

fourquenelles · 26/01/2017 14:46

Great idea Norks I do that for a dog rescue in Spain and little bits here and there mounted up to £148 last year without noticing Grin

Mummylin · 26/01/2017 16:29

Have just posted off my first lot of squares. I will now start the second lot as thanks to Zing I have plenty of wool.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/01/2017 17:11

Just read Pop's last post, hope things are OK with her

PicardsCombOver · 26/01/2017 17:19

TheOriginal I was wondering what to use the lovely organza bag for, I'm stealing your idea Grin
Purple what the heck is a schjeepes CAL? It sounds complicated!
My lavender and meadow wool arrived today so I've started a basket weave square inbetween naps Confused bloody fibro.

glenthebattleostrich · 26/01/2017 18:36

Been poorly with a bloody virus so not much crafting going on here. Felt better today so attempted this. Quite pleased.

Off to the post office with an envelope full of squares tomorrow.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 26/01/2017 19:08

The wool has arrived! Very excited! One quick question...how many squares can you get from each ball? Just thinking that as we're a group who will all be meeting and then going off to create, it would be nice to split the fabulous wool up so everyone has a range of colours but I want to avoid not giving enough wool to everyone. (can you tell I'm new to all this?). Thank you xx

SpaghettiMoon · 26/01/2017 19:33

Theresnoonequitelikegrandma depending on pattern and your tension, 6 - 8 6" squares or two 12" squares per ball.

FrenchDucksSayCoinCoin · 26/01/2017 19:39

Evening all! I'm having a lovely week off work learning to crochet, seeing everyone's pictures is really making me want to get it.

Norks thanks for that link, I hadn't heard of easy fundraising before so I've signed up.

Another beginner question, sorry! My granny square came to about 5.5in, while it did stretch to 6 it was a bit of an effort, so I put a round of single crochet on it. It's a good size now, but does look like it has a right side and a wrong side. Is that all right for a square, or is there a better way?

MrsHathaway · 26/01/2017 19:58

What a lovely way to use time off!

Yes, absolutely fine to have a right and wrong side - most squares will.

PicardsCombOver · 26/01/2017 20:05

@Glenthebattleostrich that's a fabulously bright star! I love those colours.

glenthebattleostrich · 26/01/2017 20:08

Thanks @PicardsCombOver.

Seeing the lovely photos of Zombie inspired me to go very bright.
