Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

TheWoollybacksWife your mailbag got a bit opened en route? 😳 I'm glad it got there safely. FAR FAR too lovely to get lost or spoilt! The colours you've chosen for the new blanket sound lovely together so far. If you really are worried PM Knotty or Zing, they'll help you.

bookbook. Yes, many of us are falling apart at the seems! I'm not even bloody 50 yet fgs. I'm not surprised about your neck/shoulders etc with the chair, I get the same. I try to be mindful of it, but it's tedious. You're doing well with the squares!

Norman 😂 Yes, I do live up to my MN name. I hope no one minds, but I work on the theory that people can just skip past my posts wIth an eye roll if they annoy them Blush. I'm all fingers and thumbs when knitting or crocheting - I think my fingers are too small and fat to do it elegantly! Everything was really hurting the other day, so I gave my hands a rest and instead sorted out all my wool/yarn, organised my projects etc. It felt good to have a nice sort out. Be careful not to do any damage to your arm. A small rest would be better than a long term issue developing 💐

Spindelina. At least you can do it tidily...I look like a fly caught in a spiders web! 😬 I knitted a scarf that way once, I probably won't do it again! ...

LEM. Those Peskies won't sew themselves you know 😂 New squares are so much more fun though.

Fairy. That's a lovely Angel Hug x. I had a look at a few hospital websites last night, the Poole one is asking that people DON'T Send in any more as they have over a years supply! When C2017 is sorted, I'll have a look to see if your DD's hospital needs any more & go from there.

Madison. Dinner out with DH & DS sounds far preferable. I try to make myself go sometimes, even though I'd really rather stay home. I start off thinking 'Oh this is quite nice, I should do it more often, then very shortly end up thinking...ok, enough now, I want to go home'. 😖 I definitely need Introvert Recharge Time these days Spin. My cave is cosy.

FiveFlowers you've done loads, nice colours too! 😊

Malcolm. Wow, that's lovely! Those colours look fab. I bet it would look great in meadow/spice/claret etc too.

Words of wisdom...hmmm...make 4 you like and then crochet them together with a small border? Choose a pattern from a bigger square/blanket & just stop at 12". Do spirals...

Me. I'm a tad PO. I needed some wool for another MN project. None of the online shops had all three I needed, so I ended up making 3 different orders, one has just emailed me to say they're out of stock & wont be getting anymore of it in. Which colour do I want instead...there isn't 'an instead' that works! Arghhhh. Not only does it make THIS order hopeless (I bulked it out wth Stylecraft to get the free postage) but the other two bloody orders as well. I can order a single ball on Amazon, but delivery might not be until the 21st. Grrrrr. I might PM K&P and see if they have any spare and stick some money in the WH Fund instead. Grizzle. Whinge. Moan.

WitchDancer · 13/03/2017 21:14

What colour was it Chipping?

Marcipex · 13/03/2017 22:38

Chipping, what colour was it? Just in case...

bookbook · 13/03/2017 22:41

evening!
just a quick dip in - had a busy day, and then out at a very boring committee meeting. And a busy day tomorrow with DGS .
I did post off my squares though :)
Gorgeous squares on here today -
Woolly - good luck , I am not good at making it up as I go along. I like a plan
Chipping - has it all arrived ? You will be having storage problems soon...its a bit Hmm about the out of stock - can you cancel the rest of the order ? I would certainly ask K&P - unless one of us has a ball spare for you.

TheWoollybacksWife · 13/03/2017 22:47

This is it so far. Boysenberry, Pale Rose, Grape, Lime, Violet and Emperor. Then I'm going to do Turquoise and call it a day for today. I'm in work tomorrow so I may not manage 7 colour changes.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
bookbook · 13/03/2017 23:04

Thats great Woollys -
Just properly read back - Madison - I am now at the age were DH and I look at one another when we have an invite, and we just know that we would rather be at home.- sad old souls that we are...Grin

NormansNipple · 14/03/2017 11:40

Madison I love your square!

Woolly your new blanket is going to look fab Smile I have decided if I do another one I'm going to tackle peskies as I go.

ChippingIn I have short fat fingers and legs I could never be a hand model. I'm having an enforced rest from crochet while I sew in my 180 peskies. 180!

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/03/2017 11:59

Don't forget the extra 8 peskies from the border Norm

NormansNipple · 14/03/2017 13:24

Thanks Woolly Hmm Although I expect they'll be a walk in the park after this marathon of peskies! Grin

Maybe you could add some meadow in with your pinks and purples? Or denim and khaki if you have some over from your blanket.

NorksAreMessy · 14/03/2017 19:41

Right, I have been busy doing other projects and have forgotten how many stitches I cast on to knit a twelve-sy? Is it 70?

Thank you

VittysCardigan · 14/03/2017 20:26

My latest effort - just realised that I used a bigger hook (4.5mm) for the half in empire! Still came out at 12" though Smile

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
Dutchoma · 14/03/2017 22:34

I do 60 for a 12 incher Norks

bookbook · 14/03/2017 22:48

same as Dutchoma here Norks - 60 stitches , unless I am doing any cabling, which shrinks it in a bit
Busy with DGS today, but have set off on a granny square tonight, but haven't got far - I wanted to get a bit of knitting done on my Little Hug first

IAmNotAUserNumber · 14/03/2017 23:14

Norks I do 64 stitches to 12 inches.

Treasures · 15/03/2017 03:15

I'd like to join in (late) with this please. I'm new to crochet but can do basic 6" granny squares if that's OK?

KnottyAndPistey · 15/03/2017 08:57

Sounds fabulous, thanks Treasures

Morning loves, how goes it?

Meeting with my woolly other half tomorrow, going to do another early sort of kits if we can, think we currently have 6/70 blankets made, we can get a few more underway!

KnottyAndPistey · 15/03/2017 08:57

70, what were we thinking???!!!!!!!

OP posts:
bookbook · 15/03/2017 09:14

I'll keep on going with them as long as possible ! :)

IAmNotAUserNumber · 15/03/2017 09:17

KandP would you like squares to be sent in frequently, rather than just a huge onslaught on 8/4?

MadisonAvenue · 15/03/2017 09:20

Like book I'll keep working on these - we WILL do it!

bookbook · 15/03/2017 09:26

Madison - Grin - having to resort solely to crotchet for this though .....!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/03/2017 09:29

I will be psoting squares on Saturday, 4 12 inch ones the rest 6inch ones, sorry the 12 inch takes me so long to knit

Semaphorically · 15/03/2017 09:30

I have one square done, and another one in progress. It's a bit slow, I'm a new crocheter! But I will post whatever I have by the deadline.

KnottyAndPistey · 15/03/2017 09:33

Thank you - if you have squares ready then it is easier, there will be a huge onslaught anyway, but it is more manageable, and early kits can go out to the Construction Crew. Thanks

Morning all Brew.

Thank you all for the kind offers of searching your stashes. That wasn't my intention at all! Blush. I just wanted to moan somewhere I'd be understood! However, knowing how lovely you all are I should have thought that through a bit more Blush. I feel bad now, but if anyone really doesn't mind having a look it's the Sublime Extra Fine Merino DK 373 Pumpkin. I don't need a huge amount to do the single 'landscape' square I want to do. If they'd sent it I'd have done other squares with it, but I have plenty of the other colours for that, so if anyone has a bit they can lay flat and send second class letter rate, that would be lovely. Thank you.

K&P. You were thinking 'These children (& their careers) NEED a Woolly Hug & we know our Team can do this' 😊😊. I'm still not sure if or when you two sleep or do anything else though. You're both amazing. As it's too late for tomorrow I'll do a few more before I sent a batch down. It will all be fine 🍫🍹🌸

Norks. I need 70, but I knit very tight. 188 Peskies. FMD. Best I stop whinging about mine! 😳😖🤣

bookbook. I'm counting on a lottery win so I can build the Woolly Retreat. In the meantime I've been looking for better storage solutions.

This arrived yesterday 😊
