Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

crisis averted

I rang the online shop to organise the replacement ball of wool and the girl/woman/lady found one lonely ball of the one I needed, so she's going to put it with the other balls & send them to me, hopefully today.

Thanks for the kind offers of stash searching though 😊

MadisonAvenue · 15/03/2017 12:28

Excellent news Chipping!
I was just coming in to say that I have a tiny, tiny miniscule amount of an orange from a previous Hug which I have a feeling might be pumpkin.

AmethystRaven · 15/03/2017 12:34

I wish I could knit faster! Does anyone have any suggestions for stitches/patterns that knit up quickly? It would also be easier if I hadn't cut my index finger on my spiralizer Confused

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 15/03/2017 13:02

Madison. You'll never believe it, they've just rung back to say another one is out of stock Hmm I'm a tad confused as apparently the rest of the order was ready to be sent on Monday, maybe someone pinched it out of my order 😂 It's ok though as it was only Stylecraft and I can get that locally so I just chose another colour. They're really lovely to deal with (and are trying to fix their system which is allowing people to buy discontinued and/or out if stock items).

Amethyst. OUCH! Can you crochet? It's MUCH faster. Nothing I knit is quick, although basket weave seems quicker than plain knitting. For softness knitting, for speed crocheting!

NorksAreMessy · 15/03/2017 13:21

Thank you all. I have gone for 62 stitches and let's see how we go (in my case...veeeeeeeeeerrrrry slowly)

MadisonAvenue · 15/03/2017 13:21

Oh blimey Chipping you're not having much luck!

Amethyst I managed to spiralise my finger once. I'm VERY careful now, it's not something I want to do again! Try crochet, if you haven't tried it before it's easy to pick up and a 12" granny square can be done quickly. Otherwise, I agree with Chipping that basket weave seems to knit up quickly.

NorksAreMessy · 15/03/2017 13:36

Only 63 more blankets to go!

IAmNotAUserNumber · 15/03/2017 13:48

Amethyst - stocking stitch knits up a lot faster than garter stitch because it has fewer rows over the inch. Likewise any pattern that is based on garter rows will be very slow - I did a chequer one that only required some purling in 4 out of 16 rows and it came out at a ridiculous number of rows.
For the final Chernobyl push I've been knitting stripes - 2 colours per square so that I can run the dormant thread up the side and so won't have loads of peskies at the end.

NorksAreMessy · 15/03/2017 14:26

IAm...how many rows do you leave between?
I now have 'dormant thread' to add to my vocab :)

AmethystRaven · 15/03/2017 14:31

Oh, I thought I'd do garter stitch because I could do it quickly as I wouldn't have to think about it! I'm 3 inches in, would it look odd to stocking stitch the middle 6 inches then back to garter again for the last 3 to even it up? I'm thinking it might look OK?

I can't crochet, I have tried but I found it really tricky. I am ordering more Candy yarn later (not enough colours to choose from in my stash and they're all so nice!) so will get a hook too and try the tutorials.

Thanks for the tips, and I cannot stress the following enough: Always concentrate fully when washing up sharp attachments Grin

IAmNotAUserNumber · 15/03/2017 14:43

I think that would look fine Amethyst
Norks I asked that very same question further up this (or another) thread. I have followed Woolly's advice that you twist the 2 threads together at the beginning of each knit row (for stocking stitch) so that the dormant thread is caught up by the first stitch and that way it gets carried up the row till you're ready to use it again. As it's tucked in you can make your stripe as wide as you like without dangly loops, or loopy dangles.
I've been doing that and it works well as does another method I've been trying which is to wrap both threads around around the needle for the first stitch of each knit row, and then carry on knitting with just the active thread. When you reach that double stitch on your return at the end of your purl row just knit into both loops. Repeat process for each row. The dormant yarn will peep out though to the front a bit but not massively.

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/03/2017 15:09

Amethyst you could keep the first and last 6, 8 or 10 stitches (whichever looks closest to the amount you have already knitted) as garter stitch so that it looks as if you have enclosed your stocking stitch area in a frame of garter stitch.

19 colour changes in...

stephiehelen · 15/03/2017 15:13

Hi, this sounds exciting. Is this more or less the same as the Woolly Hugs project. Do you have separate supplies of wool? Either way, I can knit you some squares, but can I have the wool please?
Thank you Smile

Spindelina · 15/03/2017 15:31

stephiehelen I recognise your username. Have you been on one of the Candy's Hugs threads? If so, the wool from that project is fine for this one, if you have any left.

stephiehelen · 15/03/2017 15:43

Thanks for coming back to me. Yep, I do knit for Cindy's hugs, but I am out of wool from them. I will keep the wools separate if necessary

Spindelina · 15/03/2017 15:53

In that case, probably best to PM KnottyAndPistey. They'll sort you out with wool for either/both projects I'm sure.

stephiehelen · 15/03/2017 16:04

Oh that's OK, I am waiting for some to come my way anyhow. It'll be here soon Smile

NormansNipple · 15/03/2017 16:54

Finished it Grin

Another one can be ticked off the list, I'll be posting it on Friday I think.

I might have a break from crochet for the rest of the day. Then again, I might try a c2c....

Woolly I love your colours Smile

Stunning Norm - it looks fab in the sunshine.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 15/03/2017 17:08

That's beautiful Norm

BitchyHen · 15/03/2017 17:12

I can crochet some squares, but can I have help with colours please? I have stylecraft special dk in cloud blue, stone, bottle, matador, a pale pink without a label and white. Can I use any of these?

NorksAreMessy · 15/03/2017 17:58

Fabulous Nipple Grin Star

bookbook · 15/03/2017 18:18

Fabulous Norm

MadisonAvenue · 15/03/2017 19:04

book I should've replied to you earlier, sorry - I could do numerous 12" crochet squares in the time it takes for to knit one

Norman that really is beautiful!

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/03/2017 19:09

Bitchy how about stone and matador together? The crafting guide in the OP suggests not using very dark colours, white or pale pastels, so I think that might rule out your bottle and the pale pink too but the cloud blue should be ok - that might also mix with the stone if you want to do two colour squares. Single colour squares are very welcome too - on one of the Woolly Hug threads K&P explained that they are essential to offset the patterned squares to avoid the finished blanket being overwhelming in colour and pattern.
