Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Spin the complexity of that square is breathtaking to me. I've been knitting for over 40 years 😱 and can't manage anything other than basic colour work. Juggling 7 balls of wool would be beyond me.

bookbook · 12/03/2017 22:04

Right, I have finished the dozen. Will keep going while I have wool, enough maybe for another 8/9 but will get these off tomorrow I think -, and get out the knitting needles to start on a square for zkids.
Woolly - here is a colour stripe pattern ( same as on top row , 3 in from left) - nice and easy to adjust for width and how many stripes you want

Thanks LEM and Woolly

Spindelina wouldn't it have been easier to do horizontal stripes? Grin

Hi all, just popping by to admire the squares!

I'm hoping to get my fifth Square finished today and then get another done so I can send off all 6 this week.

I find it really annoying that all of the 12" square patterns seem to be written for Aran wool and a 5 mm hook! I'm in the middle of a really lovely pattern at the moment, but it only came to 6.5" once I'd done the required number of rounds (minus the border). So now I'm having to try and work out a repeat so I can add a few more rounds, otherwise it's going to be half pattern, half border!!! 😤

Does anyone have any words of wisdom?!

KnottyAndPistey · 13/03/2017 09:05

Morning chums! Beautiful squares ahoy! xx

Right! I'm starting a random stripe in my purples/pinks/greens/blues. I'll be fine

I'd do the random stripe generator thingy on biscuitsandjam but I haven't got equal amounts of each colour so I'm just going to wing it Shock

I'm going in...

IAmNotAUserNumber · 13/03/2017 11:31

This was my random stripe Woolly it was meant to be consecutive stripes of 2, 4 and 6 rows alternated across 2 colours but I lost count early on so then had to make it look intentionally random Hmm

IAmNotAUserNumber · 13/03/2017 11:31

Forgot pic

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2017 12:19

That looks really good, I love the colours. Which green have you used? Meadow?

IAmNotAUserNumber · 13/03/2017 12:37

Madi thankyou - boysenberry and lime

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2017 12:39

They look great together!

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2017 12:48

I'm having a creative morning. I'm making a 12" granny square out of stash wool that I found plus I'm creatively trying to think of an excuse to get out of a girls night out on Friday. I'm really not a wine drinking girly night out type but I always accept in the name of good neighbour relations. I honestly can't be bothered though, one of them is very much a queen bee type so everything has to revolve around her and it gets a bit tiring.

Anyway....back to the granny I go! One more round to do...

TheWoollybacksWife · 13/03/2017 13:58

Oh IAm that is a lovely combination. So far I've done Boysenberry, Pale Rose and I'm working on Grape. I think my next row will be Lime and then after that...

TheWoollybacksWife · 13/03/2017 14:03

Surely Madison you have to stay in on Friday to take care of your Granny Wink

Failing that I suggest a strategic ear infection. No visible symptoms, but you can't possibly be somewhere with loud noises and unfortunately your balance is affected too.

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2017 14:16

Haha I'd thought of faking illness but with my luck karma would kick me up the backside shortly afterwards and I'd come down with something Grin

IAmNotAUserNumber · 13/03/2017 14:23

Madi i always feel the same about an evening out, would rather be home knitting Blush

IAmNotAUserNumber · 13/03/2017 14:58

Woolly - that sounds like a good combination, pls post pic here when you're done. I am working on a saffron and sunshine striped 12" and doing as you suggested yesterday and working in the dormant thread with the knitting thread at the beginning of each row, it's working out well.
I've decided the most time effective method for me is to do 12" stripes in stocking stitch in 2 colours only - that avoids time spent sewing in peskies and lets me play around with colour. Tackling crochet will have to wait until I'm back on Candy's after the beginning of April.

SpiralArchitect · 13/03/2017 15:40

Madison I have a neighbour like that. Tiring, isn't it?

I have had a busy week or two with loads on and precious little Introvert Recharge Time - consequently I am now completely bloody frazzled and want to hide in a cave... Sad

K&P I will post next Monday because that will be the earliest I can get to the PO...

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2017 16:37

The granny is finished, now back onto Candy squares while I wait for more Chernobyl yarn Grin

Spin it's extremely tiring isn't it. I know exactly what you mean about introvert recharge time so you have my sympathy.
My husband asked yesterday when I was going out and I said it was Friday, but I didn't think I was going to go. He said he knew I'd say that. In fairness I always do then end up going anyway to be neighbourly but not this time. We went for a lovely meal a couple of weeks ago so I think I might book us a table there and we can take our 16 year old too, it'll probably work out cheaper than a night out buying rounds leaving more money for yarn

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 13/03/2017 16:41

Well, I have been hooking like crazy yesterday evening and today! Have got another 12" finished, this one is Cloud Blue and Lobelia, although the photo makes it look like Sherbert!

Just about to start on another and will then get 6 squares in the post to K&P on Wednesday/Thursday.

I'll continue right up to the deadline but will try and post every 6 squares or so!

WitchDancer · 13/03/2017 16:46

That's really pretty Malcolm

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2017 16:47

That's lovely Malcolm, which pattern is that? I don't think I've seen anything like that before, it looks very intricate!

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2017 16:47

Spiral, not Spin - sorry!

FiveFlowers · 13/03/2017 17:05

Some beautiful handiwork on here. I posted some 12" squares today.

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 13/03/2017 17:06

Thanks everyone! It's a pattern called 'In Treble'. It's actually really easy, just groups of treble clusters over and over again. It did get a bit repetitive, though although it has the added boys of being fairly quick to make!

I think I'll do another one in different colours at some point.
