Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Chipping It's only neat because I go slowly - I am, indeed, ridiculously slow for an experienced hooker Grin

book Definitely not just you! I've only just started C2C, so I know better for next time...luckily it's a pattern that has a fair bit of stretchability!!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 07/03/2017 11:55

Madison. LOL @ your parents. We did that with my friends DD, & the orange creams too - she still hoovers them both up.

Spin. 😂 That's a lovely little cable. What colour is it?

bookbook. I don't like strawberry chocolates at all normally, but these are something else!

spiral. I think you must underestimate your speed, the rate you are cranking the squares out! 😬

I've been doing tedious paperwork jobs today. I can't wait until I take the 11yo to piano this afternoon, nothing for it but to sit & crochet while I wait....longerblesson today too! B O N U S. Might even take her teacher some flowers 💐

SpiralArchitect · 07/03/2017 11:57

I just bought more yarn. Blush

I now need to work out how to hide 11 more balls of Stylecraft in the stash without it looking obvious that the stash is 11 balls bigger...

Spindelina · 07/03/2017 12:01

It's lipstick, Chipping. Nice and bright!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 07/03/2017 12:58

Spiral, I hear you and feel your pain! My yarn stash is in the bottom of the toy cupboard and it's rapidly taking over...!

I'm nearly finished on my next square, just about to put the babies to bed and then hopefully have a couple of hours to get it done!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 07/03/2017 13:42

Spiral. Vacuum packed bags! Or put them in a bag with a tshirt on top & some panty liners on top of that! No one will delve any deeper!

Spindelina. It looks nothing like lipstick on my iPad!

Malcolm. Do the kids really need toys? That's the question.
🤣

I can't even begin to describe my storage issues, let's just say I could have done without ordering more yarn & wool today 😂 Not to mention I really need to be doing painting & renovating not knitting & crochet 😖😂

But you know, kiddies need hugs and you can do that sitting on your bum

WitchDancer · 07/03/2017 14:52

I'm feeling ridiculously pleased with myself - I've done a granny square in Candy's colours, my very first one!

I've got loads of wool to use up so I'm going to give a 12" a go for Chernobyl Grin

SpiralArchitect · 07/03/2017 16:07

Another square done, in saffron, tomato and turquoise - very easy pattern.

WitchDancer Fab square!

And for anyone that hasn't bought any yarn recently, Wise Badger have another sale on - Stylecraft is £1.59 again. Go on, you know you all want to... Grin

Afternoon chums!

Getting ahead of ourselves, we have sent 5 kits off to the Construction crew for joining!

Evening! Have finished my Rose Square. Really enjoyed making this one, I even had to do maths and everything to get the repeat to work!

However I have a couple of questions...

I was going to do another round of single crochet to give the edge more stability for when it's joined, however it's already a smidge over 12". Would the construction crew prefer it as it is or would another round make it easier for joining?

Also, I want to do another one for Candy's Hugs but need to replace the Rose and Raspberry. I was thinking Lavender to replace the Rose and Fuchsia for the Raspberry? Does anyone have any other ideas? Will post on the Candy's Hugs thread too but thought I'd ask here as well!

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
bookbook · 07/03/2017 21:29

Evening!
Malcolm- that square is just beautiful ! I think lavender and fuchsia sound lovely or maybe even pomegranate instead of the raspberry?
I will post my very simple granny square, which I finished tonight. Too frazzled to do anything complicated as my DGS was here for the day - so I need to wind down from being Isambard Kingdom Brunel - " Grandma, I need you to build a bridge " , (from lego) to a car designer - "Grandma make a car that turns into a submarine " (from playdoh) to being Gromit in The Wrong Trousers, frantically laying train track in front of an out of control battery train....

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 07/03/2017 23:05

Witch. That's a fabulously neat first square! Well done 🎖Fun isn't it!

SpiralTheEnabler. 🤣

K&P. Excellent news! I plan to send a batch next Monday. I just need to settle down & finish them instead of starting new ones 🤣

Malcolm. Fabulous. Mafs & everyfink- well done 🎖 Personally, I'd think leaving as it is would be better. I think the bigger squares cause more problems than looser/unstable edges do. But given I'm not Construction Crew, my opinion might not count for much 😂

Can you lose a couple of rounds in the next one so you can add more border?

Lavender & Fushia are nice together or Lavender & Violet.

These are Violet & Fusia.

What colour are your roses?

I'm personally not too keen on Fusia & Lipstick together, . If you're ordering online & want to have a look at any of the colours together I'm happy to post you some of any/all the colours.

bookbook no wonder you're knackered! You sound like loads of fun, lucky DGS 😊 You do well to do even a Granny Square after spending all day playing with a small person.

I did the CTC stripy one tonight. It's not quite what I had planned for the evening, but....oh well 😬 I have an appointment in the morning so I'm going to take it & do the Pesky's while I'm waiting around. I'm earning my 😇

I have crotchet cramp in my fingers but I've done my 12"! Much much faster than knitting for sure Smile

VittysCardigan · 08/03/2017 07:36

I love that Witch!

bookbook · 08/03/2017 08:58

Witch - that is gorgeous.
Chipping - He is lovely , thinks I'm invincible, and can do anything ! - and the joys of being a grandma - you give them back Grin and today, I can take it easy .
I am doing a knitted Candy's today, have set off the Little Hug ( I know I shouldn't have) and will find a different pattern for a 12" Chernobyl I think :)

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 08/03/2017 11:20

Chipping, the roses are in Claret. I do love Lipstick, but I just thought it was too bright against the Grass Green.

I was torn between Fuchsia and Pomegranate, tbh, but I thought the Fuchsia went better against the Claret of the roses as it's darker than the Pomegranate.

However, what I think I may do in about a million years once all my other squares are done is a couple of the starter squares (in the middle, before the rose border) using both combinations and then post here for a final decision!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 08/03/2017 11:23

Oh and I might try and fudge the rounds between the two borders to increase the stitch count more rapidly - I had to do quite a few to get up to the required multiple of 8 + 6 stitches for the border repeat.

Then I'll have more at the end to do a larger border.

I thought leaving it was probably the thing to do, but am willing to add on if the Construction Crew advise otherwise!

MadisonAvenue · 08/03/2017 17:25

Definitely going to send a parcel of squares by the weekend....but I just want to do a few more before then.

bookbook · 08/03/2017 17:42

Malcolm - I think they find it a tweak easier if they are slightly smaller than slightly bigger, but that edge looks pretty good to me !
I am trying to get at many done before I send off in one go , , or even use all the wool that I bought to do them with, whichever is achievable in the time - they need to be there for 8th April don't they? so another few weeks. I have just got the wool for Zombie too, but thats only a couple of 6" - ers really!

MadisonAvenue · 08/03/2017 17:46

Yeah, I think that's the date. I just thought I'd send a load off early so that they construction crew have got something to work with.

SoupDragon · 08/03/2017 18:08

Malcolm my personal preference is for a slightly small square rather than a slightly too big one. They are easy to stretch that little bit more but not so easy to shrink. Others may have different preferences!

I have yet to meet a square I can't shoehorn into a blanket one way or another though :)

VittysCardigan · 08/03/2017 23:24

Have been concentrating on 12" squares, granny squares & c2c mostly but I did have a go at something a bit more exciting but it is only 6"
